Sony: Microsoft is relying too much on Halo 3, we've never been so reliant on one game

A news outlet contacted Sony last week to ask for their response on the market impact that Halo 3 will have. A Sony rep responded by implying that Microsoft are relying on Halo 3 too much and commented that unlike MS, Sony have never been depedent on one game and Playstation never fails to offer a broad portfolio of games with this year being no different.


Asked about the market impact of the "Halo 3" release, a Sony representative last week issued a statement suggesting that Microsoft is relying on it too much. "We've never been dependent on any one game -- PlayStation has always offered a very diverse portfolio of gaming experiences and this year is no different," the statement said, citing upcoming titles such as "Gran Turismo 5" and "Metal Gear Solid 4."

Sony wishes they had a game they could rely on, but this Christmas ain't looking to good. $50M to develop with an expectation of the game making $300M+. Thats one hell of a ROI. I don't think they need to rely on anything as Bioshock came out a month ago and did exceptionally well.

I honestly think the PS3 will come into its own next year, there are scheduled to be some big things happening, but the word schedule is always loose with Sony. I know one thing there are quite a good few games i got my eye on for the PS3.

But, i have both so whatever happens i just hope they concentrate on making amazing games and stop this console war bitching. To settle it they should go have some Deathmatches or something, cos i'm tired of hearing it....Capture the Flag Paintballing every 6 months...Round Robin style, Microsoft, Nintendo and PlayStation....the winner can have all the bragging rights until the next tourney.

WTF?! XBOX 360 has way better 3rd party than all three consoles. Don't forget about AceCombat and Too Human! Plus just the fact that the 360 runs most if not all cross platform games better. I have a feeling Assasin's Creed isn't going to do so hot on the PS3.

I think if we see another price drop on Sony's side, thats where you will see the most change as far as moving consoles this fall. Halo 3 isn't really a console mover, it is a game that 360 owners are excited about, Halo fans already own xbox's so although it will do extremely well in sales, I don't think it will move that many more consoles.

I think you underestimate the selling power of well established franchises on Sony's front though. Ratchet and Clank, Unreal Tournament 3, COD4, and let's not forget SOCOM: Confrontation, all of which will move consoles, especially if there is another price drop. Besides those titles though, they have some newcomers in the form of HAZE and Uncharted that should be hits as well. Gran Turismo 5 prologue, Little Big Planet, Wipeout HD, are just 3 great, low cost-play now solutions from the PSN. Even though Home was delayed, they should still get an open beta before Christmas.

360 is gonna have to fend off alot of horrible consumer reports this holiday as the hardware defects still haven't been fully addressed(if you think people don't read those reports during the holidays you are smoking crack)and aside from their golden boy Master Chief, M$ doesn't really have any AAA exclusives for it's console this season. Most of the AAA titles coming to 360 are multiformat. Mass Effect and BioShock may be great games(BioShock for sure)but they will most likely fade because of Halo 3. Also with BioShock there is a huge PC user base that has access to the game as well. Why buy a new console for a game you could just spend 50 bucks to get on PC? So I don't expect BioShock to move that many consoles, it's already lost in the mix that is HALO.

Oh, but I saved the best for last....Expect Wii to move TONS of consoles, simply because it hasn't really lost steam since it's release and with a new Smash Bro's, Mario game and the recently released Metroid, you can't count Nintendo out due to lack of exlcusives.

All in all, I expect a big shift in the Video Game Industry this Holiday season. Expect Master Chief to break every conceivable sales record. Expect Sony to earn alot of respect back from it's fanbase. And expect Nintendo to keep being #1

I have always believed microsoft has relied on halo to much thats why they have such a very weak 1st party development compared to sony and nintendo.

Its clear their stratergy to back only the 1 game has some merits on income but it will overshadow too many games for the 360 from other developers this year, which is not good for the long term stratergy.

The hype alone could become damaging as pathetic reviewers (who contradicted themselves in their reviews lol) make claims like you won't need another multiplayer game until the next xbox console. Any third party developer is not going to want to hear that one are they.

I think this is why sony do not rely to much on 1 particular 1st party title as it can become a problem if that title overshadows all third party titles, a problem nintendo had with the gamecube I believe funnily enough.

MGS4 has been hyped by both Konami and Sony, just look at the press release statements from Sony pre-PS3 launch and post-PS3 launch.

I apologize for going off topic but why do ps3 owners expect Ratchet to be a system seller? Only one Ratchet game has even cracked the top 50 in sales on the ps2 and that was Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal with a little over 1 million sales. I realize that it has a decent following, I think its a fun platformer myself but I think many are overestimating its appeal especially when its going head to head with Mario Galaxy.

if anything sony is the one reliant on 1 game. if you recall sony seems to only st their eyes on 1 title at a time as their ace up the sleeve, and when that title releases and fails expectations they quickly move over to the next "coming soon" title. i remember when it was all up to Resistence, then it went on over to Motorstorm, then Lair and HS and so on and so on. Sony is always hoping the next title will save them where MS really could care less they have so many titles that even crappy sellers would keep the in the game, MS just happens to be aware of the fact Halo will sell them millions any time they want.

idk it just seems that the front page is all over 360 and how great it is and yes it does also post the bad and people see it, comment on it, and generally aren't really effected by it at all but when ps3 or sony story comes along say like this one on how "we aren't relying on one game this fall" (something like that) the person who posted it, posted a picture of mgs as if they are trying to stir up **** or trying to say something to the effect of "are you kidding me look here mgs is your banking game" i just don't think thats right for a news type blog but thats just my opinion

btw have u heard any news on Marvel Univ? being a fan of COH im dying to see some info on it. as for the topic it will take Sony more much more than 1 really good game to cause a dent in the 360's library of rated 9+ titles wich are a few and growing. ppl seem to be too busy noticing halo and gears to see that MS actually has other genres while not as exaggerated as with the ps2 wich was an rpg flooded library.
