University of Cincinnati major predicts 25% of students won't be in class due to Halo 3 launch

USA Today are running an article which looks at how tomorrow will result in many pulling fake sickies to score a day off or perhaps even the whole week to play Halo 3. The comments range from people planning to taking the day off of work, to those planning to skip school with a University of Cincinati marketing major expecting that over a quarter of students won't be in class on Tuesday due to Halo 3 commenting that some students are planning to take the complete week off!


"I've already talked to my teachers and got my assignments for Tuesday. I don't plan on going to class," says Dane Mitchell, 20, a Cincinnati State and Community College sophomore.

Like Mitchell, Neil Godwin, 21, of Milford, Ohio, reserved his copy more than a year ago. He's taking a vacation day Tuesday from his job as a Kroger computer help desk analyst to play Halo 3 all day with his brother.

All the Halo hype — with Burger King, Mountain Dew, NASCAR and Pontiac promotional deals — has made this game release the biggest cultural phenomenon since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows arrived in July.

"At my school, at least 50 kids are getting it at the midnight release," says Sean Faust, 17, a high school senior from Alexandria, Ky.

"I'm not going to lie. I know about 15 kids who are going to skip school Tuesday, maybe even myself," Faust says. He'll nap 3-11 p.m. Monday, buy his copy at midnight and play until dawn — or much later.

University of Cincinnati marketing major Dave Durham predicts that "about 25% of the students won't be in class on Tuesday" because of the Xbox factor.

"I know a couple people who are taking the whole week off on vacation," says Durham, 21.

Regardless of whether it is over hyped or not, the game is going to pull in insane numbers. No one can really explain the logic behind it, some people loath the game others think it does everything right and is well balanced but all agree that MS is going to break sales records.

Are you fucking insane the bottom line at the moment all the good games are on the 360, I haven't played my PS3 for ages the only thing I have been using it for is watching my Blu-Ray movies where as I have been playing Bioshock, The Darkness & soon to be playing Halo 3 but the Icicng on the cake is not Halo 3 it's Mass Effect that 1 game will be worth owning a 360 for it WILL be the game of the year. One other thing Jerzycock & Leet haven't been posting you know why it's cause there too busy playing Halo 3 LMAO. What you can't seem to understand is that despite all the hardware problems, the 360 is still outselling the PS3 and people still support it. Why? Because there is nothing worth getting on the PS3, and the games that are on the horizon are sequals of sequals.

Sony forced BD onto you unlike MS with HD DVD, they offered you the choice of wifi, not forcing it on you. MS laid the foundation for what an online community should be on a console and Sony is trying so hard to copy it and still can't do it right. Still having trouble getting into a warhawk match are we?

Where are all your great PS3 titles? See ya in a few years since none are coming out in the next 6 months. I wont get into graphics cause your so used to seeing garbage on Sony systems you wouldn't know what was a great looking game. There are games on the original xbox that look better than what is out on the PS3. Orta, Amped2, Riddick, Ninja Gaiden are all games that make PS3 games look weak.

Yes, this game has been over hyped (understatement). But the bottom line is, why can't you just accept that MS don't need to pay people to do this kind of thing, many, many people want to play it that much.

Why does everything have to be 'paid' or 'bribed' - can't you just see that for some people, this is a huge video game launch, and this is what people do when a big game they want to play comes out.

Just because you can't see or agree with the action, does not mean that is the case for others.

Take the game (Halo 3 in this case) out of the equation, and nothing changes. It was the same back in the day of Sonic (Sonic 2usday, anyone?), it's the same for Halo 3 now, and it will be the same for MGS4, FF13 etc etc.
