Microsoft has stated to a UK technology publication that there are no immediate plans to integrate WiFi into the Xbox 360. A spokesperson commented that it is down to cost before going onto suggest that gamers themselves can go out and spend £60 for a WiFi dongle should they want one for wireless connectivity. He commented that an ethernet cable and 1 months free Live subscription is included as standard and consumers shouldn't have to pay extra for technology they don't want.

Microsoft has confirmed to Pocket-lint that it has no immediate plans to include Wi-Fi in the Xbox 360 console even though it continues to push its online gaming service.

"It's down to cost" a spokesperson for the gaming division told us before suggesting gamers can spend an additional £60 for the Wi-Fi dongle if they want wireless connectivity.

"We currently include an Ethernet cable and 1 month's free subscription to the Xbox Live service. We don't want people not interested in wireless connectivity having to play for a technology they don't want."

Yeah except that the wifi dongle is HORRIBLY overpriced, its $99, and i think 80EUR cheapest here in europe - thats a total rip off for an accessory that costs about 10EUR for any PC...so yeah how about lowering the price to a reasonable level - lets say 30EUR, but 80EUR is a rip off. Guess thats how MS makes money - overpriced accessories. Same with Headsets...

Microsoft is just cheaping out. In CAD or the US a wifi dongle will run your from $100-$120 on top of the cost the system.

They should have done it like PS and had the core system with no wifi and then the pro with wifi.

I don't know, I think its just stupid. Many out there agree they shouldn't pay for extra things if they don't need it, but thats what my brother said. Now he has a hideous network cable running from one room to the next so he can play on Live, whereas I can have my PS3 anywhere in the house connected to any TV and enjoy using the online abilities with no extra cost.

Oh an I forgot to mention my PS3 plays HD movies out of the box.

now xbots might understand why the high quality high tech ps3 is dearer than the outdated defective & cheaply built 360 console ;)

They also don't want to pay £40 extra when a £20 netgear usb adaptor would do.

I would rather see a wifi built in as it allows more people instanst access to a consoles online store aswell as gaming. If the 360 had wifi built in then I might have bought some live arcade titles, but as it don't I play a game and never really look at that side of things as it requires me connecting a big lead across from my router to the 360.

I don't know about other countries but wireless routers are given free with broadband from nearly all U.K. suppliers so access to internet from wireless is far easier than wired due to phone points normally not near tv sets and no extra wiring necessary.

Someone will say wired is best but they probably have a console next to a pc in a bedroom or something, but thats not practical for many.

U mean u did find one workin for the x360 or just comparin with a pc one ... anyway u can find a 108mb usb wifi key for just 15€ no way m gonna spend 75€ on my x360 thats why microsoft sucks they do overprice pheripherals and they are even bugged .See:

Guitar Hero flawed controller had to replaced

Wireless Earpiece is bugged

So is the Wifi Wheel that has to be replaced too

Halo 3 that has to be the n°1 seller for the x360 and the major disappointment of the year despite what biased and paid reviews saywith the Collector's Edition once u paid that much u will find both your hard earned and paid dvds badly scratched.

I wont talk bout Rod and people sending x360s for the 4th/5th time coz its like shooting on the red cross.

this wouldn't be an issue if MS allowed other manufacturers to use their hardware/software. The controllers, web cam, HDD. mem cards and headset are all way overpriced compared to similar and usually better PC products.

FFS I got a free USB wireless dongle with my netgear router. Maybe MS should get sued again for monopolising on the 360 hardware market, then we may well get cheaper addons.

The 360 may be the best console for the money at the mo, as it doesn't force you to have extra's you don't want, but for FFS what marketting idiot thought it would be a good idea to make consumers pay well over the realistic price if they do want those extras. With all the hardware issues you would think they would drop the peripheral prices a touch to make the whole package more attractive. it still makes me laugh that you can get an 8gb mem stick for the same price as a 512mb memory card or a 500GB external HDD for the price of the 120GB HDD.

im on my 3rd offical play and charge kit, im at the stage now where i refuse to buy anything microsoft branded. if theres a 3rd party version out there i'll grab that it'll last twice as long and is 2/3rds the price (even if it means i have to go back to cables). now if microsft stopped us from beta testing there final products and started making sure they work properly, priced them right i might buy some extra crap but at the moment not a chance in hell its overpriced and prone to defects so why bother.

edit: ill just stop posting in this thread since this becomes the norm (Bash m$) even though they make good....every other company is god's little saint,
the only reason i bash $ony is for their exorbant price and lack of software for that price

here's a little tip to get wireless on the xbox (or on ANYTHING that has a wired ethernet port) for far cheaper than the official adapter.

Buy a WRT54GL (newegg has them for $52)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124190

Once you get it, install DD-WRT firmware on it.

This will allow you to set the router to "Client-Bridge" mode which allows you to use it as a client to give any wired device, wireless internet.

Saves $50 over the xbox adapter, and it'll work on any device with an Ethernet port.

Personnaly, I don't mind not having Wi-Fi, but I agree that would've been a nice feature. I have a long cable running from my 360 to my router, but the installation is clean, and it doesn't show in the room.

Where I say Microsoft are full of it, is when they say this would've been too expensive to include.

Let me get this straight. We can buy a Nintendo DS for about $140 in Canada, which includes all the tech inside, processors, two lcd screens, one touch screen, casing, everything, AND is also Wi-Fi enabled, and Nintendo is making money out of the thing.

So...

Either everything but the Wi-Fi components cost next to nothing (yeah, right), or the Wi-Fi component is not that much expensive.

I know the DS Wi-Fi component is limited in transfer speed, but still...

A manufacturer saying that Wi-Fi would have driven the cost of the thing skywards is obviously spreading the BS on a very large crap toast. Yes, it would have raised the price a little. But only A LITTLE. Like, 20 bucks max. Maybe less.

I personally do not want wireless on the 360. Hell I would like the Wii to have an RJ45 port so I don't have to use wireless. At least the 360 gives you the option to use both where the Wii forces you to use wireless. Wired connections are faster and more reliable. I know most people don't have a "wired" house and the wireless option is cheaper and much easier to install. I prefer saving the $20 or whatever the cost to MS would have been. Everyone wants everything but damned this isn't that big a deal. If you want wireless buy an adapter.

microsoft have a fucking cheek.
here in the uk,the wireless dongle is £60,a ripoff price,as pc ones are like £5.
and the other thing that pisses me off,is they say,the 360 includes a ethernet cable..ffs..couldnt it be a little bit longer..the one i got with mine is about a metre..not long enough at all.
i managed to buy a 20metre one for sending files to my kids old xbox, for £3.

So a console that is about twice the cost of the Wii does not include wifi (which the Wii has built in) because its too expensive???? And they want people to spend $60!!!! A cheapo wifi card costs a fraction of that. They split it out because they realized they would make a bigger profit that way.

For those wanting wifi, I agree with the other person who mentioned that you should get a WRT54G series router and flash it with new firmware that allows it to work as a wireless bridge. For those who want something a bit easier, get a wireless bridge (sometimes called a gaming adapter). That way once the 360 is dead, you can still use it elsewhere on your network. Either option should still cost less than that stupid wifi adapter.

LOL @ microsofts Philosophy, They dont want to spend anymore money, so well just say "the people dont want it"

M$ said people dont want HD disc mediums in their console, yet the HDDVD addon sells like hotcakes. M$ said People dont want HDMI, yet all there future consoles now have HDMI. M$ said People dont want WIFI....

Microsofts crystal ball is very broken.

Or mabey Microsoft just wants to rob people with overpriced periphials. DING.

Thats there flawed secrect to low console costs.

I got mine sealed and unopened at CeX for £35. Still overpriced imo, but beats paying nearly twice as much as anywhere else.

remember this is coming from a software company that had no vision or planning for the internet. even billy boy stated that, they had no idea of the impact of the internet. well... crystal ball fell i guess.

who needs mroe than 640K, who needs HDMI, who needs 1080P, who needs HD movie playback. and now who needs wifi. no planning and its starting to catch up with them and consumers.

wifi USB dongle is like $5 bucks, some companies got on a deal with a router and usb wifi dongle for only $30 bucks. so yes m$ is putting it to their loyal customers, oh you need a charge kit? need a bigger drive becuase 12gb is too small. You bought an HDMI TV oh wait we didnt see this coming (2003 HDMI was out). You keep rushing the system its hardware, you are a software company. what do you expect.

their so-call improve their software with updates, but they do the same to the hardware, thinking the hardware and software are the same thing.

how sad.

Wifi isn't all that important to me, the only reason I would want wifi on my ps3 is to connect my psp, and since now you can connect it without it I have no use for it. I agree with ms in this, it's just fluff, so I wouldn't cry if I had to buy it with wifi (not that I'm planing on buying a 360), but I rather save some $$ so I can buy something else.

Besides, if ms are to do any R&D work we all know where they need to concentrate.

bahh,im not really for wifi anyways on 360 or ps3. i always like to stay "jacked in" like the matrix ethernet style on my systems. i have a router downstairs and when i first got my ps3 i was using wifi since my 360 was jacked in,and i kept losing connections to it here and there,so i just plug and unplug between systems since they are right next to each other so no biggie.
