Someone could explain me this method:
This seems to be a perfect way to play backups...
Please forgive me if I get something wrong as this knowledge is from something I was doing about 5/6 maybe 7 years ago.
First you would mod the game image initial sectors to make the PS2 think it had a DVD in the drive. This will cause the drive controller to turn on 9660 mode.
Making the mod code is also fairly easy, there are two possible ways...
1.
Boot the dvd upgrade software that is supplied with a dvd remote. Stop with process from building it's new software on the memory card with a couple of well placed breakpoints, replace Sony code with your code and continue execution. The new code is then stored on the memory card ready for the next boot.
When the PS2 is first booted it checks the memory card and boots your new code.
2.
Just like before but you might find that you have to exploit the header of the new/your dvd (game) player. There are header main sections to a dvd player...
Header
Initial code
Sony PS Logo
Main code space
If I remember well the header has the version number and description in ascii which could have been overlooked, perfect for an exploit, the PS logo I think was pretty safe though. Then you have the code sections (ref section 1 for this).
I hope this helps
