I received a modded Wii from my cousin and would like to know if there was any way to tell what modchip I have. If I don't know it, will it affect anything in the future that I might want to play? Also, if I update my Wii can it get bricked?

I would open it. It is not difficult to open.

Open it and look, it's the only way to tell.

My cousin didn't know either. I guess I can play without knowing the chip but can anyone else answer my other questions?

you could try using some of the different setup discs
and see which one makes some changes to the chip

if you update your Wii from a disc of a different region (e.g you have a ntsc Wii and you update with a disk from a pal region) you will brick your wii, you wont be able to fix it, you will either have to get a new Wii or get it fixed by Nintendo (which they wont because its modded)
you can use brickblocker to take the updates out of games before you burn.

Unless I'm incorrect, which is known to happen, modding it only voids your warranty. Nintendo will still fix it you'll just be charged for it.
