Note 2007-09-18: Do not attempt to change any icons on the XMB, it seems that they implemented a check to see if the files are genuine, changing them might result in a semi-brick.
Note 2007-09-11: The steps for creating the battery are likely to change in the near future, Booster and Mathieulh seem to be working (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=78619) on a way to include multiple IPL's on one Magic Memory Stick, to make it both Fat and Slim compatible.
For now, just follow the steps below.
(0-1) REQUIREMENTS:
(0-1-A) A "fat" PSP running firmware 1.50 or custom firmware, together with a non-el-cheapo battery.
(0-1-B) A "slim" PSP running firmware 3.60, it is NOT possible to install this on a higher firmware version!
(0-1-C) Memory Stick PRO duo, NOT a Memory Stick Duo, 64 MB should be fine, but must be 4 GB or less. (According (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showpost.php?p=675066&postcount=88) to PROD, 4GB doesn't work at all, other people said that their 4GB did work)
(0-1-D) AC Adapter.
(0-2) TESTED ON:
(0-2-A) White Fat PSP TA-082 (IC1003) with original 1800mA battery and firmware v3.52 M33 Update 4 (english)
(0-2-B) Black Slim PSP with original 1200mA battery and firmware v3.60 (english)
(0-2-C) Sony 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo
(0-2-D) Original AC Adapter
(0-3) QUESTIONS/ANSWERS:
(0-3-A)
Q: I Only have a PSP Slim and no PSP Fat, can I install the M33 CFW?
A: No, you must have a PSP Fat to create the Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery.
(0-3-B)
Q: I did not backup the "KD" folder after creating the "ordinary" Pandora's Battery, now I can't turn my battery back to normal. Can you send me the proper files?
A: No, but what you can do is boot up your Fat PSP without the Stick and Battery (use AC Adapter), then insert Stick and Battery and run "Pandora's Battery Creator".
(0-3-C)
Q: After I have created the Magic Memory Stick for the Slim PSP, can I still use it to unbrick/downgrade the Fat PSP?
A: No, and that's why you should make a backup of the KD folder after making the "ordinary" Magic Memory Stick. Just put back the KD folder from the "ordinary" Magic Memory Stick and you can use it on the Fat PSP again, no need to modify the battery in any way. ( (1-1-J) and (2-1-F) )
(0-3-D)
Q: Can I use the newly 3.60 M33 enabled PSP Slim to revert Pandora's Battery back to a normal one after the installation? Or do I have to use the Fat PSP?
A: No, you must use the Fat PSP. (thanks DarkSeveN) The function to write the Battery's EEPROM was accidently left in 1.50, Sony removed it right after discovering that, so 1.51 or higher kernels can't write the battery's EEPROM.
(0-3-E)
Q: I can't see the two or three applications on the XMB after putting them in "GAME150".
A: Try putting them in "GAME" or in "GAME352" (replace 352 with your version, example: you have 3.40 OE-A, then make a folder called "GAME340")
(0-3-F)
Q: I'm running Vista and I have a problem running MSPFORMAT, what can I do?
A: Some people reported this problem, there seems to be no way around this at the moment (besides from running it on XP). I recommend to continue without the MSPFORMAT step, in some cases it works without it.
(0-3-G)
Q: I already have the Pandora Battery for the Fat PSP and want to convert it to the Slim, what do I have to do?
A: Follow steps 1-1-F (copy over 'pandora_slim'), 1-1-H (copy over 3.40 and 3.50 updates) and 1-1-N (run 3.60 mem-stick installer). Basicly you just have to read the M33 Readme, you've already done that, right? ;)
(0-4) PRE-INSTALLATION STEPS AND NOTES:
(0-4-A) Download Pandora's Battery here: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=75759
(0-4-B) Download M33 Custom Firmware 3.60 here: http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=78493
(0-4-C) Download Official 1.50 Update here: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/4
(0-4-D) Download Official 3.40 and 3.50 Updates here: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1130 and here: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1164
(0-4-E) Make sure the battery has enough power (how about 100% ? ;))
(0-4-F) I recommend taking a look at the Readme's from both "Pandora's Battery" and "M33 Custom Firmware 3.60". This way you'll not only see the procedure from my point of view.
(0-4-G) When writing files to the memory stick, you can either do this by USB, or Card Reader, it doesn't matter apart from the speed.
(0-4-H) I recommend to NOT press any buttons on the PSP until I have stated to do so.
(0-4-I) If at any point your PSP won't turn on again because you already created the Magic Memory Stick or the Battery, take them out and use the AC Adapter to start the PSP, then put them both back in.
(1-1) INSTALLATION PART 1:
(1-1-A) Connect stick through USB or Card Reader to PC.
(1-1-B) ( obsolete step, though it is in the Pandora's Battery Readme, the next step already does this part )
Format the memory stick, you can do this in many ways.
Easiest would probably be with the Windows utility: My Computer > Right click the stick > Format > Enable "Quick..." > Start
Or use a command prompt: (replace X: with your drive and MyLabel with any label you want)
format X: /FS:FAT /V:MyLabel /Q /X
(1-1-C) Open a Dos prompt (Start > Run > CMD > OK) and enter these commands, replace "C:\Pandora's Battery\mspformat" with the folder where your "mspformat.exe" is. Also replace X with the drive of your stick.
CD "C:\Pandora's Battery\mspformat"
mspformat.exe X
It will ask: All data will be lost. Do you want to continue?. Type 'y' and press enter.
It should then say: Drive succesfully formatted, and partition moved.
If you think that's way to hard, try this:
Start > Run > Type this and press OK:
C:\mspformat\mspformat.exe X
But, you must find out by yourself what the correct Path and Memory Stick drive-letter are (in example: "C:\mspformat\" and "X").
(1-1-D) Disable USB connection, remove the Memory Stick. Then re-insert the stick and enable the USB connection (or, eject from cardreader and insert again)
(1-1-E) Create a folder on the stick with the name "PSP", in the PSP folder make one called "GAME150"
(1-1-F) Copy these folders from the Pandora package to the GAME150 folder: "pandora_battery", "pandora_battery%", "pbfirm_install" and "pbfirm_install%"
(1-1-G) Copy these folders from the M33 package to the GAME150 folder: "pandora_slim" and "pandora_slim%"
(1-1-H) Extract "EBOOT.PBP" from the 1.50 update package and rename it to "UPDATE.PBP", then copy it to the ROOT of the memory stick.
(1-1-I) Extract "EBOOT.PBP" from the 3.40 and 3.50 update packages and rename them "340.PBP" and "350.PBP", then copy them to the "pandora_slim" folder.
(1-1-J) Put the stick in the "fat" PSP (or disable USB connection) and run "Pandora's Battery Firm. Installer"
Once loaded, press X to create the required files on the stick and wait for it to exit to XMB.
(1-1-K) Connect stick through USB or Card Reader to PC.
(1-1-L) I recommend making a complete backup of the memory stick at this point.
Keep the "KD" folder in a safe place if you want to use the Magic Memory Stick on the "fat" PSP in the future.
(1-1-M) Copy the newly created "msipl.bin" from the memory stick to the "msinst" folder of the Pandora package located on your hard drive.
(1-1-N) Open a Dos prompt (Start > Run > CMD > OK) and enter these commands, replace "C:\Pandora's Battery\msinst" with the folder where your "msinst.exe" and "msipl.bin" are. Also replace X with the drive of your stick.
CD "C:\Pandora's Battery\msinst"
msinst.exe X msipl.bin
It will ask "Are You Sure ?[Y]", type 'y' and press enter.
You now have created the original Magic Memory Stick
If you think that's way to hard, try this:
Start > Run > Type this and press OK:
C:\msinst\msinst.exe X C:\msinst\msipl.bin
But again, you must find out by yourself what the correct Path and Memory Stick drive-letter are (in example: "C:\msinst\" and "X").
(1-1-O) Put the stick in the "fat" PSP (or disable USB connection) and run "Pandora Ext. for Slim 3.60 M33 Installer"
Once loaded, press X to create the new files on the stick and wait for it to exit to XMB.
You now have created the Magic Memory Stick for the "slim" PSP.
(1-1-P) Run "Pandora's Battery Creator"
(1-1-Q) First press "triangle" to backup the battery's EEPROM to the stick, you can use this to restore it to a normal battery later on.
It's also possible to restore without the EEPROM backup, though it is unclear what the difference is.
(1-1-R) Press X to convert your battery to Pandora's Battery.
(1-1-S) Again, I recommend to make a backup, at least backup the "eeprom.bin" that you (might have) created earlier. [backup 2]
Keep the "KD" folder in a safe place if you want to use the Magic Memory Stick on the "slim" PSP in the future.
(1-2) INSTALLATION PART 2:
(1-2-A) Make sure the "slim" PSP is off. Put the SLIMinized Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery in it.
I was having a hard time slamming the "fat" battery into the "slim" PSP, but you just have to push it hard until you hear a click.
It should turn on by itself, though you won't see anything on the screen.
(1-2-B) You have several options here, if you just want to modify the firmware to M33, press X.
This shouldn't take more than a couple seconds, and then it will turn off automaticly.
Other options are "Square" and "L + R + triangle", the use of these options are out of the scope of this guide, refer to the Readme of the M33 package for more info.
(1-2-C) Remove the Magic Memory Stick and insert the normal "slim" battery.
[b]Your "slim" PSP is now ready for use with homebrew! :D
(2-1) RESTORE BATTERY TO NORMAL ONE (optional):
(2-1-A) (Make sure you haven't deleted anything on the Magic Memory Stick inbetween the steps, if you did delete anything, at least put back "pandora_battery", "pandora_battery%" and "eeprom.bin")
(2-1-B) Turn on the "fat" PSP without the Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery inserted, but with the AC Adapter.
(2-1-C) Insert the Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery after it was powered on.
(2-1-D) Run "Pandora's Battery Creator"
(2-1-E) Press L-Trigger + R-Trigger to restore the battery to a normal one with the use of "eeprom.bin"
You could get an error at this point: "Error writing at address 0x14".
Ignore this error, it happens most of the times, if not always.
Everything should be back to normal now.
(2-1-F) If you want to make the Magic Memory Stick to work again for the "fat" PSP, just put back the "KD" folder that you backed up earlier.
Have Phun!!

Since the new pandora files for the Slim overwrite some files on the MS, will the "new" Magic Memory Stick (MMS) that is compatible for the Slim also work on the Fat?
If I already had a MMS made and working for Pandora on fat PSPs, will this damage the files and prevent it from working on a fat PSP?
So would I need to make a seperate stick for PSP slim and PSP fat?

...or, if you're in a situation like me, who sold his fat psp but still has a pandora stick and batt...
... i was able to get the patched(tnx!!) files namely folders "kd" "registry" and file "msipl.bin". backed up my old pandora stick files and DELETED, not format it. stuck in the patched folders/files and ran on the slim.
...NOTE: do not ask for these files here as they are illegal!

Make sure you do [backup 1], then when ur done, put the files back and your stick should work on the fat PSP again.

I'm pretty sure you don't need the MSIPL.BIN if it's already been Pandorized before. I have run the MSINST.EXE only once with the release of pandora, never touched it again. It's only about the KD folder, and maybe the REGISTRY folder.

I have checked (via looking at the raw sectors of the MS), the IPL that is written to the MS is unchanged by the M33 software (aka: once you have installed it properly to the MS, unless you format the MS it should stay where you put it).

Normal format doesn't change anything, IPL stays there.

Acts like normal.

Try "PSP/GAME" or "PSP/GAME352" (depending on your firmware)
Or set Homebrew folder in recovery menu to "GAME150".

just make a backup of the kd folder (ie kdphat) of the pandora memstick before running the m33 installer. you could use the stick now for both phat and slim just by toggling the 2 kd folders.

Thanks for this guide. Everything works great EXCEPT for the putting the battery back to normal at the end. I load the Pandora Battery Creator and push L + R, but it says this: "Error writing at address 0x14".
Is it supposed to say that?

In Windows XP, you click START, then RUN, and then type CMD (and then ENTER).
You then need to navigate to your msinst folder to run the .exe file. If that's new to you, the easiest way is to do this:
Move the "msinst" folder to the root of the C:\ drive, so you have it as C:\Msinst
Get to the command prompt as instructed above. Then type (without the quotes) "cd.." and then hit ENTER. Then type "cd.." and then hit ENTER. Do this as many times as necessary so that all you see is C:\ on your screen. Then type "cd msinst" and hit ENTER.
That should take you into your msinst folder. Then follow the instructions on the previous page on what to type.

Here's another way:
REPLACE X WITH YOUR MEMORY STICK DRIVE, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT CAUSE YOU MIGHT MESS UP SOME OTHER DRIVE OR SOMETHING
Move the "MSINST" folder to C:\
Goto Start > Run
Type this:
C:\msinst\msinst.exe X msipl.bin
Press OK
Done
Can't be easier, only if I send you a BAT file

I have checked (via looking at the raw sectors of the MS), the IPL that is written to the MS is unchanged by the M33 software (aka: once you have installed it properly to the MS, unless you format the MS it should stay where you put it).
Normal format doesn't change anything, IPL stays there.
So what is it? Will the IPL get destroyed if I format my memory stick through my PSP, or not? I'm selling my fat PSP soon so I might not be able to fix my Magic Memory Stick if I screw it up.

Just wondering the PSP 'fat' out right now their FW version is most likely NOT 1.5
so I was to get a PSP fat and slim to install this FW on the PSP slim. Will I need to downgrade the PSP fat to 1.5 before proceeding... which would mean I would need ANOTHER battery?
Another question is, will i need to keep the PSP fat or the extra battery after installing the m33 fw on the PSP slim for future FW?
sorry if the questions are noob.. I don't own a PSP and was just recently reading up on the FW stuff. QUITE a lot of information.

You do not need the format tool, and yes the MSIPL file stays the same.
It actually writes the IPL to the starting sectors of the memory stick, you cannot see it just like that (must do RAW dump)

Well a Fat PSP with Custom Firmware, most likely also supports 1.50 so don't worry. If the Fat PSP is stock (default/normal) than yes, you need to downgrade it first.
I'm not sure if you need the battery for future updates, but since they already have 3.60 kernel mode, I think you won't need anything.

Hi,
I hope someone can help me.
I have a PSP Slim and a fat PSP.
I followed the instructions on how to make a Magic Memory stick and Pandora Battery.
When I pop in the fat battery to my Slim all i get is the green light. No reading from my memory stick and of course a blank screen. When I press X nothing happens so I just pop the battery back off and its not bricked. If anything nothing happened.
Anyways as for the process of formatting the memory stick (Sony Pro Duo 4GB) I format it via Windows Vista. When trying to run mspformat. I get a message saying no need to run a pseudo .... message.
I use the GAME folder when I use GAME150 folder I cant see the files in XMB.
After that everything installs well and I create or at least I think I create the battery and magic stick properly but then nothing happens.
I dont know if not successfully running mspformat makes a difference or since everything installed after that maybe its not something for me to worry about.
I also run Vista so Im not sure if that is the problem.
Hope someone can help!

The most important step is running MSINST.EXE.
But before that you must have the programs visible in the XMB ofcourse.
Try putting it in GAME352 or GAME340 (or whatever version you might have)

You talk about 2 things here, msinst.exe to make the Magic Memory Stick and Pandora's Battery Creator to hack the Battery's EEPROM.
When you just click the MSINST.EXE it is normal that you don't get a confirmation. You must give it a command line.
You could create all 3 folders: "PSP/GAME", "PSP/GAME150" and "PSP/GAME352". Then put the applications in all 3 folders, if it still doesn't work, you will need to ask yourself if your Fat PSP is actually operating properly.

This looks like some sort of error:
Check free reserved sector:to small reserved sectors
Probably means that there are not enough sectors reserved, in other words, Pandora requires more sectors for the MSIPL.BIN data.
This goes kinda beyond my knowledge, but you MIGHT try to format your MS in a different way.
For the guide I used a 2GB which is fine, but I also have a 4GB stick, which was formatted in a way that is not comfort to standard.
The PSP formats Sticks that are larger than 2GB, in FAT32 mode, I have formatted my 4GB in FAT mode. (suppose to be faster)
You might try to format it with the FAT filesystem to see if it works. Check (1-1-B) to see how to format it as FAT (which is the command-line option "/FS:FAT")
There's also a command-line option:
/N:sectors Specifies the number of sectors per track. Maybe this could be of use, though I do not recommend to use this unless you really know what you're doing.
Finally done...
Used an old 512Mb MS instead of the 4Gb one.
With the 4Gb I got:
C:\Documents and Settings\Pedro\Desktop\PSPHACK\Pandora\msinst>format H: /FS:FAT
/V:MyLabel /Q /X
Insert new disk for drive H:
and press ENTER when ready...
The type of the file system is FAT32.
The new file system is FAT.

Not really, I have been in the PSP scene for only 2 months now.
Bought my fatty 2 months ago, while I had never even played on a PSP.
So a friend of mine installed 3.40 on it, and that's where I started. I already created the Pandora twice before, one time for fun because I didn't believe it could be done :P, second time to downgrade my brother's PSP.
Last week I bought my Slim, and yesterday I installed M33 without ANY problems. I actually started writing my guide before I had even transformed my fat battery back into a normal one.
I must say, it's really not that hard if you just follow the readme's and guides that are available.
My recommendation:
- Read Readme from Pandora's Battery
- Read this: HOW-TO: Restore a battery used for unbricking - unbrick without buying a spare! (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=75821)

AFAIK it's not possible to have both on one stick yet
The easiest sollution would be to have 2 zip files on the stick, one containing the KD folder for the phat, the other containing the KD folder for the slim, then just use a pc quick to unpack the desired zip.

Thanks for the tutorial, mine comes out friday. Only thing i'm wondering is i see all these threads about compatibility issues w/ isos? Is this even true or just spread misinformation?
Also i'm not sure if i'm reading this right but it seems like this new FW is set on top like we used to do before the Custom firmwares were released right? so it's not flashed in the PSP but on the memory stick?

No the firmware is running native from flash, M33 just modifies some files in the original 3.60, so the process is also very fast (like 2 seconds)
About the ISO's, I haven't seen anyone confirming that an ISO did not work. I think most people have their UMD settings wrong or something. I have only tested two ISO (Worms OWF 2 and DJMAX 2) and they both work fine, uhum, better than fine, it seems that everything is much smoother and faster!

Ok, so I got Pandoras battery and Magic stick to work properly, however, when I load it into the PSP Slim, it boots automatically and I just get a black screen. I press X to flash, and according to the tutorial, it should reboot automatically??
It will not reboot, could someone help me out?

So, I ran 33, installed it on the stick, popped it in the slim, and no dice.

Can only be incorrect files on the stick, or a faulty IPL on the stick (did you do the MSIPL.BIN writing with the use of MSINST.EXE ?)
Else I would just start over, it's like 3 minutes work :p

yah I got the DOS commands to work, final result stated :
MS BOOT CODE
Plus, I took the battery and mem stick and tried is on the psp fat, and it brings me into the flash mode as described in step 2. This does not happen with my slim. I amsure it is m33 related.

So i checked the mem card, and there is a log from m33 installer.
It says :
Install initialization... OK

Any idea?

Im having the same problems as you Anthonymac. I get the same error message with my IPL under my log. I decided to repeat all the steps over again from start to finish just to see if i missed anything. I pressed x on the final step to install m33. All that I get is a blank screen after i restart. I wonder if i bricked my slim psp, i sure hope not otherwise i might have to take it back to the store.

Regarding this: (3-1-D)
Q: Can I use the newly 3.60 M33 enabled PSP Slim to revert Pandora's Battery back to a normal one after the installation? Or do I have to use the Fat PSP?
A: No, you must use the Fat PSP. (thanks DarkSeveN) The function to write the Battery's EEPROM was accidently left in 1.50, Sony removed it right after discovering that, so 1.51 or higher kernels can't write the battery's EEPROM.
Wouldn't it be possible, if you emulate 1.5 through Devhook, to write the battery's EEPROM ?

I found the error of my way, I pressed L+R+Triangle to remove M33, just like it said under the m33 readme. I then installed m33 again and everything worked perfectly. Thank you jesus for not letting me get a brick!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)

No, you need the fat psp to make a pandora's battery and m33 magic memstick.

It says in the guide to format the memstick on the command line. Can't the memstick be formatted on the PSP? What about mspformat mentioned in the pandora readme? Also, is it critical that only the folders PSP and GAME150 is created? Or can there be other stuff on the memstick as well.

Well the EEPROM writing feature only exists in 1.50, it was already removed in 1.51.
I don't think it is possible to emulate it, or it is either way to hard.

From my experience there can be other stuff on it as well. A while ago my Magic Memory Stick also included M33 3.52 and update 4 etc.
Just make sure you have backed up the data. About the formatting, I don't think it's required at all, it's probably just for having a clean start.

everything is working fine except for converting the battery from a pandora battery back to a normal one. When I insert the pandora battery into the fat psp with the ac plugged in, I get the orange charge light and it won't power up. If I leave the ac unplugged then insert battery then plug up the ac, I get a black screen but I have power. I must be doing something wrong. I didn't delete any files from the memory card that I used for creating the pandora battery yet.

Though I don't have any TV-out cables yet, and I can't wait to play DJMax on my projector :p, that might just change my whole opinion.

Hey Lounger for someone who has been more than a year out of the scene what programs do you recommend for this firmware in:
PS1
SNES
GENESIS

How does the Daedelus run?

PS1 > Not tested yet, but I don't think you need an app for this, as it is build into the PSP's firmware.
SNES > None available for CFW Afaik, only 1.50
GENESIS > None available for CFW Afaik, only 1.50
PDF/Ebooks > Not tested yet, though I used to have PSP-PDF, and that's for 1.50 but has source-code included.
Gameboy > gpSP HEN-D (CFW build of gpSP, mine is called "gpsp09_HEND.zip")
Cool and new? I dunno :p
I think PSPTube is cool. Though the latest version is only for 1.50, so get one before that and use the "200over" folder.

I have never used any Pandora GUI, it has also nothing to do with this guide. ;)

I dunno much (or anything) about M33 (http://bestwikiever.wikidot.com/M33) but in OE (http://bestwikiever.wikidot.com/OE) or Devhook (http://bestwikiever.wikidot.com/Devhook) ISO (http://bestwikiever.wikidot.com/ISO)'s w€re put under mso:/ISO

You either didn't do MSPFORMAT, or something tells me that there are memory sticks out there that don't have enough sectors on the location where the IPL wants to reside.

Ok, I am pulling out my hair here since I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I follow the steps up to 1-1-I
If I put the files in the GAME150 folder, the fat PSP simply won't see them; if I put them in the GAME folder, I can see them but, after clicking Pandora's Battery Firm. Installer, I get the following message:
The game could not be started. (8002014C)
I am running 3.03 OE-B. Can someone please let me know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!

Sounds like you need to enable the 1.5 kernel? or maybe a fresh update to 3.52 M33-4 would help out a little.

Yeah I think it ignore multiple spaces so u need to use dots or some kind of filler...
Anyways my PSP slim came w/ a 1 GB MS, can I use that? I formatted the 2 GB I used for Pandora and am planning on copying the files to it, but they are for fat PSP, so I need these files or do I have to have a blank MS at the start anyways?

Quick question if anyone knows -
Once the slim psp is hacked, would it be able to create its own "pandora/slim" batteries or do you still need to keep your old PSP around for that?
I'm afraid if I damage my psp slim or something I wont have a fat psp to go through this process all over again.

To create the Pandora's batt you need the 1.50 kernel (which the slim PSP does not fully support).
Get a 256Mb card and make it into a Magic Memory Stick and keep it for emergencies

I have been formatting first in the PSP, then QuickFormatting in Windows, and then running mspformat.exe G. If I don't format it first in the PSP, mspformat.exe won't even run, it will return the line "Pseudo Format is not necessary."

I believe you'd still have to do mspformat.exe manually even if you use Pandora Easy installer but I've never tried it before myself.
Try use the psp to do a format first before mspformat.exe G and skip the Windoze Quickformat. Make the necessary directories n put in the files. Do a cold boot as u did before to see if the files dissappear.
Did u mentioned before what type of memory stick you were using ? I might have missed that info. Do you have another memory stick to try on ?

Skipping the windows format made it worse. Although mspformat.exe appeared to run just fine, all the directories the PSP creates were still there *after* it ran. Now the PSP won't even recognise the memory stick.
It's a 2.0 GB Sandisk Memory Stick PRO Duo (MagicGate), just bought at a physical store (which means I can just pop down and return it if it's faulty). I have a 1 GB one (also Sandisk Memory Stick PRO Duo), am backing it up now so that I can format it and try it, will let you know how it goes.

Correct, if the fatty says "Version 2.xx", "Version 2.xx" or whatever, it is an original firmware, and it must be either downgraded to 1.50, or transformed to a Custom Firmware, by using a Pandora Battery, or the oridnary "upgrade/downgrade" method.
What is the ordinary down/upgrading method? Is that what you mentioned in your guide with the backup of whatever the "KD" folder is? Would we need Pandora's battery for anything else other than to unbrick his PS?
my buddy and i are new to the CFW stuff so we just don't wanna brick either of our psp's lol. Since this was all my idea, I don't want to have him ask me to pay for another system for him or something.

Check the stickies in this forum, ordinary downgrade methods are usually about savegame exploits for GTA or Lumines (I'm talking about the Fat PSP, the Slim can ONLY be hax0red with the Battery)

Hi all,
I posted a couple of days ago since I could not use my 4GB MS Pro Duo to install M33 on my SLIM.
I borrowed a 2GB stick and still have the same problems.
Hope someone can help.
1. If I format using PSP I get a WRITE FORMAT error when running mspformat.
2. If I format using Windows Vista I get a Pseudo format not necessary error.
I tried doing the other processes after this like the firmware installer, msinst, m33 pandora ext. installer. Yet when I plug the pandora battery to my slim the memory stick does not read.
I also noticed when I run msinst I dont get a confirmation message to press Y. When I press enter I noticed my memory stick access light does not light up so I guess its not writing anything the the MS stick.
I am thinking this stems from my inability to mspformat the ms stick.
What are my options?
Thanks to all in advance.

I already re-formatted the card I used though
However I did create backups and saved them in my computer as the guide instructed me to do so, I made the first backup per the guide "backup1", and then another "backup2".
Can I just put that stuff into a cheap memory stick pro duo or do I have to go through the entire process on the psp again?

I dont know if this has been posted or tried other than me, but if you fail to back up the files on the memory stick ( i know you'd have to be a dumb@$$ right... or just in a hurry to try it) before you convert it for the slim, all you have to do is run the original Pandora firmware installer and it will change the MS back to one useable on a fat PSP. I just did it and it works no problems.
I am using a 1GB sandisk (the yellowish green one) and a Datel X2 battery(the original datel battery not the pandora knockoff)

Got my slim today :D. I started to make my pandora setup last night because i just couldn't wait. I am one to find my own answers to questions and problems i have. I rate this guide 4/5 Very good.
I did have problems during setup, my psp fat refused to read the mspformat memory stick when i used my sandisk usb card reader on both psp fats and xp requested to format the stick. The guide said this method would be fine i even recovered 1.50 from 3.30 OE.
I highly recommend if you are having trouble and just following this guide to read the readmes. My solution and a quote for truth by this threads author. I Am now the owner of a m33 3.60 slim (flashing is very fast huh)
(0-3-F) I recommend taking a look at the Readme's from both "Pandora's Battery" and "M33 Custom Firmware 3.60". This way you'll not only see the procedure from my point of view.- Connect the PSP to the PC with the Memory Stick inside via the USB
Connection.
@andygo
I have seen Vista is known to have trouble with mspformat as seen in pandora launch threads early on. If you have xp i suggest going to that if not try this anyway.
Load XP.
Use the psp fat to format the memory stick (in system settings)
Connect via psp usb to the pc. Go to my computer and rightclick/format the memory stick. Run the mspformat command.
Remove the memory stick and disconnect from usb mode.
Reinsert the memory stick usb mode and continue.
I really hope this helps.

Still a no-go, even with my older MS, all the files are gone after a cold boot.
I have a similar set up i just formatted with the fat psp then put it in my memery card reader and copied over the files into the game150 directory and the boot directory as in the procedure no other formating and it worked!
same version firmware as you but I used a 512 card ..
after trying formating the other ways i always ended up with your error too...

Nice guide.:)
Thanks, had the GAME/GAME150 problem that others have mentioned but aside from that, guide was perfect.

What batteries do you guys reccomend as "Cheapo" batteries?
All the sony batteries I've ever seen in stores are like $35+, is it safe to use a 3rd party one?

Thanks for the guide. It got me up and running with a shiny new ice-silver PSP Slim & Lite on 3.60 M33.
However, what is this mspformat deal? I didn't get how to use it so I just skipped it I think.
Alls I did to format my memory stick was right click on the PSP drive on my Windows XP Pro computer and format it.
Everything seemed to work despite the fact that I didn't use mspformat.
So can someone explain more on mspformat?

just flashed.
My SanDisk 4GB works, just the pain of making sure u remove the card before disable USB on phat PSP.
Oh, btw my microSD in MSPD adapter works for Pandora's Battery, but fail on IPL.
anyone got issue of 3rd party battery that cant work in PSP slim?
Check the stickies in this forum, ordinary downgrade methods are usually about savegame exploits for GTA or Lumines (I'm talking about the Fat PSP, the Slim can ONLY be hax0red with the Battery)
if he feels so inclined to he could also revert back to official firmware correct?

I already re-formatted the card I used though
However I did create backups and saved them in my computer as the guide instructed me to do so, I made the first backup per the guide "backup1", and then another "backup2".
Can I just put that stuff into a cheap memory stick pro duo or do I have to go through the entire process on the psp again?
If you want to use another memory stick, you write the IPL again (with MSINST.EXE and MSIPL.BIN)
Nice guide.:)
Well thank you.

The only difference between downgrading the PSP slim vs. the Fat is in the files in the memory stick? The pandora's battery are exactly the same as the one that work with the PSP fat?

There are two "KD" folders. One for the fat and one for the slim? I should back up both KD folders and interchange them later on if I want to boot from the fat or the slim right?

I have a magic MS I made for fat, should I format it or keep the data when making an MS for slim, from what I understand the only difference is the KD folder?

If you are really so unsure, why are you even beginning with hacking the PSP.
Just make a backup.
You have to try stuff you know, it's what makes you learn and understand things ;)

Ok, well, the only thing I did regarding mspformat is copy the .bat file or whatever to the root of my freshly formatted memory stick and then double click on it. It flashed a black window for 1 second and that's it.
Then I deleted the mspformat file and continued on.
Did I properly execute the mspformat? I must have because I have a working 3.60 M33 PSP Slim & Lite.

alright, I have downgraded and installed custom firmwares on almost 30 psp fats. I have all the files I need, I can follow the instructions just fine, accept the logical format of my memory stick isn't working. I have windows vista ultimate installed now and I don't know if that is the problem but I keep getting this error when I try to format from a dos prompt....."Open Error (read)."
can somebody help with this please, or has anyone done this successfully on vista?

Thanks for the guide man, after a bit of tweaking it worked for me, just a few things to add to your guide
#1 mspformat wouldn't work in Vista, but it worked in XP
#2 neither of the command prompts in vista or XP will goto that DIR for some reason, just had to rename the DIR for mspformat
#3 After you run mspformat, you need to turn off the psp
and finally
#4 also mention that when making the DIR's on the memory stick that you may have to also add GAME dir in addition to the GAME150 or else the progs won't show up.

Hi,
I suggest you find a PC with XP on it. It took me one whole week to figure out it wasnt my memory stick that was the problem. I guess there are a bunch of posts that said Vista is a problem.
On my first try with XP everything worked great. 5 mins and its all done.
Good luck!

for #2 I didn't have to rename anything I was able to get mspformat to work in any dir I had it in.
I recommend adding #4 as a note to the install guide. Actually I am making my post just to make a note of it but it seems i was beat to the punch. I had originally just made a GAME150 folder and copied the required folders into it, but nothing would show up. I renamed it GAME and they all showed up, but they would not run. Then I just decided for the hell of it to create both GAME and GAME150 and copy the required folders to each one, and that ended up showing everything twice. In the end it took me a little bit of trial and error to figure out that both GAME and GAME150 directories must be created in order for the items to show up (but you only need to copy the stuff to the GAME150 folder).
and hello there zoglog. looks like you ended up getting a slim lol

I finally solved my problem, albeit in a strange way:
I downloaded and ran Pandora Box's GUI. Then, just to make sure, I deleted all of the files that weren't supposed to be there at step 1-1-I of this guide and added "pandora_slim" and "pandora_slim%". I did everything else as per this (quite wonderful, btw) guide and voilá! Instant Slim 3.60 M33. :)

1-1-C) Open a Dos prompt (Start > Run > CMD > OK) and enter these commands, replace "C:\Pandora's Battery\mspformat" with the folder where your "mspformat.exe" is. Also replace X with the drive of your stick.
Quote:
CD "C:\Pandora's Battery\mspformat"
mspformat.exe X
It will ask: All data will be lost. Do you want to continue?. Type 'y' and press enter.
It should then say: Drive succesfully formatted, and partition moved.
Quote:
If you think that's way to hard, try this:
Start > Run > Type this and press OK:
C:\mspformat\mspformat.exe X
But, you must find out by yourself what the correct Path and Memory Stick drive-letter are (in example: "C:\mspformat\" and "X").
With this step i always get the error:
Logical Drive has more than a physical drive. Cannot handele it
Please help it is a 1gb stick original, i whant 3.60 m33 on my slim but this step is holding me back to make a magick stick, and also get the error 0.00000x when i am traing to make msipl.bin?

Makaveli, try to just put it in "C:\",
then go to the dos window, type in "cd c:\" and "mspformat.exe x"
Your stick seems to be corrupted or something, you can give it a shot and try to reformat it in windows and/or the psp again before trying to use the mspformat tool again.
I just upgraded my psp slim to 3.60 m33, thanks a lot for the guide! One question though...I backed up the nand and got a "nand-dump.bin". How can I extract the actual files and folders from that *.bin?
cheers,

(1-1-D) Create a folder on the stick with the name "PSP", in the PSP folder make one called "GAME150"
(1-1-E) Copy these folders from the Pandora package to the GAME150 folder: "pandora_battery", "pandora_battery%", "pbfirm_install" and "pbfirm_install%"
(1-1-F) Copy these folders from the M33 package to the GAME150 folder: "pandora_slim" and "pandora_slim%"
(1-1-G) Extract "EBOOT.PBP" from the 1.50 update package and rename it to "UPDATE.PBP", then copy it to the ROOT of the memory stick.
(1-1-H) Extract "EBOOT.PBP" from the 3.40 and 3.50 update packages and rename them "340.PBP" and "350.PBP", then copy them to the "pandora_slim" folder.
(1-1-I) Put the stick in the "fat" PSP (or disable USB connection) and run "Pandora's Battery Firm. Installer"
Once loaded, press X to create the required files on the stick and wait for it to exit to XMB.
i did all till this point but my 3.52 m33 doesnt reconize the files for the batterie fw installer, why:confused:
somehow it works somehow not idk why but another question:
whats the correct called name? because "Pandora's Battery Firm. Installer" doesnt exist in the xmb

"Pandora's Battery Firm. Installer" is the exact name (if you press Information to see the whole name). Look at the top of this post for info on the "GAME" and "GAMExxx" folders.

Thanks for posting the guide, the readme in the 3.60M33 Slim CFW archive was good enough for me, however thanks for the tip about the KD Folder on the pandora stick, I backed it up before I applied the extra files needed for the slim.
Now I can just toggle between Slim Pandora and Phat Pandora, cheers!

Thanks very much for your guide. One change I had to make was to use the GAME folder instead of the GAME150 folder.

oh i did not see it down at the bottom lol. I think it should be noted near the top where it says to create the PSP/GAME150 folder. And it's also not evidently clear whether GAME and GAME150 should coexist in the same folder or not, so I think it should be made clear that they do need to be in the same folder, just that GAME150 will be the folder to put all the pandora/m33 stuff in there (because putting them in just the GAME folder by itself will end up with an error saying cannot run the game, and boot you back into the XMB.
other than that though great guide for gettin 3.60 on my slim :D
edit: though somehow it seems people are able to run it in the GAME folder, for me it didn't, so maybe it just depends on if the hardware is finicky or not i dunno lol. I think safe bet would be to just create both GAME and GAME150 folders, but place all the pandora/m33 folders into the GAME150 folder.
