Valve's Gabe Newell has revealed that the smash hit first person shooter Bioshock for the Xbox 360 and PC has been banned from their offices until Half Life: Episode Two and The Orange Box are fully completed and shipping to retail. Newell commented that everyone will get a copy of Bioshock when they're done and he's really looking forward to playing on it.

"We had to ban Bioshock from our offices," Valve boss Gabe Newell told us. "Nobody gets to play it until Orange Box is done - that's our reward to ourselves as a company; everyone gets a copy of Bioshock."

Sounds it bit harsh to us; Bioshock isn't that long, Gabe.

"I haven't had a chance to play it. I'm really looking forward to it," Newell then admitted.

Do you have no idea what's going on? Valve makes quality games. Bioshock is .. arguably .. seriously one-upping them. The people who work at Valve presumably enjoy games, and here comes a game that does what they do, only better. Of course they want to check it out, because that's the type of "intelligent" shooter that they love.

Gabe knows it will be a big distraction, plus he is obviously trying to both get them to focus and improve morale... So he bans it until they are done, and then promises it as a reward.

anyway, i think it's hilarious.

Its a smart move in all actuality, because I can see some game editor saying to himself, "Maybe we can add something real quick", delaying shippment adn irritating Gabe.

I dont see it as on-upping...I see it as a couple of great game companies that have great mutual respect for each other and love what they do. There is alot less "competition" between the truly great development groups than what most think, many are actually quite friendly with each other and give props when they are due.

Youre misunderstanding... They banned it from the offices so they wont be distracted. They still have projects to finish and they need to be top quality. So when theyre done, THEN they get to play to their hearts content.

I didn't mean it as an intentional "we are going to one-up our arch-rival, Valve... BAM! Bioshock gone gold, suck it, Newell!"

I just meant that Bioshock is, in many ways, a better Half Life 2 than Half Life 2 was. From a player perspective, I consider Bioshock to have upped the ante in many ways.

Of course, HL2 is a great game too. Bioshock didn't top it in EVERY way, either. Maybe I just need to play it through some more, but I'm not enjoying the big daddy fights.

- they are too time-sensitive, because I feel rushed to do it before the little sister "goes to bed"
- they are too difficult, because I'm rushing and because I don't have any weapons that significantly damage the big daddy
- they are too easy (and cheap) because I just keep popping back up at the vita chamber

Often, it just amounts to whether or not I can keep running back quick enough to pick a fight and whittle the BD down a little bit more each time. It's a really lame fight dynamic, IMO. The normal zombie-like bad-guys are pretty lame, too. In fact, they remind me too much of System Shock 2 bad guys with better graphics.

I'm completely in love with Rapture itself, though. Amazing.

Valve in my opinion is one of the worst game companies ever. Not only does it take them to release a game but after the release they take their sweet time patching and during some patches cause more errors. Delayed half life 2 because it got leaked BS!!! They weren't done with the game and got an excuse. Hey Gabe just because you are jealous of a company who can create a quality game and stay on schedule don't tell your workers to not play it, plus it won't slow them down that much compared to the speeds your are currently working at.

There is a simple answer to why he has done this.

Its nearing crunch time for Episode 2 and Valve cannot afford to have anyone slack off to play videogames.

That's exactly what I as thinking. It's great to see some IP rule a well known franchise. I just beat the game for the first time earlier today and I have to say, it's got GOTY written all over it. Loved the pure open ended-ness of the game, and the story was surprisingly great. When I started playing it I thought that the enviroment as going to be the only thing that made the game, as aparently a lot of people who haven't played it thought (See article on it being a Disney Ride), but the story was surprisingly good and I loved the ending I got.

lol. If nothing else, your posts can at least make me smile. :)

As for Overrated, apparently you do not know the meaning of the word. Overrated means that it doesn't deserve the hype it has/gets. IE Halo 3 is overrated, and Lair is overrated. Difference between the two, Sony is still hyping Lair despite it being out and getting really low reviews.

Lair: 67%
Bioshock: 96%

At my college, 67% is failing, and 96% is an A. ;)

But go ahead and live blindly if you wish, I applaud those who make good games, not those who make games for the system I support.

well its logical to ban the game its common sense if someone played bioshock you can bet your heels someone at that office will get an idea off the game and try to add it in the game and probably ruin the originality intended for the title. subconciously a dev can come up with something he saw in bioshock and add it to HL without even being aware of it. but its nice to know they like bioshock as a game considering they are competition...too bad i cant say the same about jerzmob
