Gamasutra has put together U.S. NPD sales data on the video game industry past and present to create some rather snazzy looking sales charts. We found the following two the most interesting - the one on the left shows how quickly the Wii has gained on the Xbox 360 and the one to the right shows that the DS has simply been wiping the floor with PSP but things show signs of improving for the Sony's shiny portable.

The steeper the slope of a system's graph, the more quickly it is selling. Clearly the Wii has been doing well, and the Xbox 360 has a lead but is still holding its own.

On the handheld side, the PSP's Spring 2007 price drop appears to have spurred a stable increase in sales. At the earlier $200 price the PSP was averaging 42,000 systems per week. Since dropping to $170, Sony has sold 56,000 systems per week, a 33% increase from the previous rate. The PSP software charts indicate that the increase in system sales has not driven an interest in newer PSP software: four of the top ten PSP games in July 2007 were originally published in November 2005 or earlier. The redesigned Nintendo DS Lite more than doubled sales of that system, and in September Sony will launch a redesigned PSP, the PSP 2000. Should sales continue at their current rate and perhaps even increase with the redesigned hardware, Sony should sell significantly more than 1 million PSPs during December 2007.

Interesting, but no big surprises. I expect the PS3's curve to start spiking upwards this fall/winter, but nothing any better than the 360's curve did at about the same time of release.

Of course, I love the Wii, and I knew their motion wii-motes would revolutionize gaming. I never would have predicted supply would be short nearly a year after release, though. It's ridiculous. If they sat around and did nothing, it would have one last hurrah this Christmas, and then flatline.

If all they did was release Marios and Zeldas, it would do the same thing. Metroids are included in that. However, with that new weight-sensor thing they are making, I think they're going to keep it all going strong at least another 8-12 months.

If they make Wii Yoga...I guarantee you the USA will have around 8 million new Yoga practitioners within 6 months.

I agree, the PS3 will sell a lot of consoles around new years since all it's games are for a 2008 release date, and mostly all in a few months from eachother.

lol @ the yoga comment. I could see the game coming with a certificate of Yoga training if you can finish the training mode on the game. It'd come with a Wii Printer ala the Gameboy Camera to print the diploma off.
