View Full Version : Mercury News confirms Xbox 360 codename 'Falcon' coming this Fall
San Jose Mercury News are indicating that they have received confirmation that the new more reliable 65 nanometer Xbox 360 consoles are to be available this Autumn. The smaller chip technology derives a number of benefits and should cut out the ridiculously high failure rate of the Xbox 360. However, Mercury News reports that Microsoft are going to keep the 'Falcon' under wraps as they don't want to put off current gamers from purchasing the 'old' Xbox 360 models on the market.
"Falcon (the code name for the updated 360) is coming your way this fall," says Dean Takahashi after speaking with unnamed sources. "The first Xbox 360s with it are probably on ships coming from China."
The newer machines are said to cost less and improve reliability over current 90-nanometer 360 units that have been plagued with overheating issues causing a large number of systems to fail. As a result, Microsoft extended the warranty on Xbox 360 from one to three years in July.
"If you're in the market for an Xbox 360 but really want to wait for the highest-quality machine, in theory you might want to wait until Falcon," Takahashi adds. "You'll be buying a console that will last longer and have less risk of failure."

You guys get pwned by M$.... and then when a person like me comes along and speaks some TRUTH, you come back with some weak jokes that have nothing to do with the topic at hand.... what a loser.
Thats what you dont understand, your not speaking truth your speaking opinion. There are plenty of us that have had no problems whatsoever.

I do understand that, but a great number of xbox owners are not as lucky as you are........ you also have to understand that.
maybe if you came and tried talking to people instead of barging in on a thread and insulting everyone people would listen

Yep potentially almost 1/3rd of them...most of which can easily get fixed as long as they didnt void their warranty. IMHO the problem is unfortunate but MS is doing a pretty decent job at addressing the issue. If you compare it to the average product recall they have been downright speedy. If Sony had been as repsonsive when my 2nd and 3rd PS2's died I probably would never have even bought a 360 (I never owned the original xbox). Discovering a problem, oberving the trends and creating a fix for it takes time, sometimes response is fast other times its not. Sony isnt immune to that either, they just recalled several Cybershot cameras after 3 years of saying there was no problem, Toshiba and Sony also did a recall of yet more batteries last week in some of the Tecra notebooks and to their credit they found the problem only a few months after the batteries shipped.

WTF is wrong with Microsoft. They sit there and admit they wont release a "fixed" console until they sell all the 100% defective ones....
How are they allowed to get away with this? Recall the fucking things, get the falcons out, and everybodies happy.
Glad I'm waiting as long as possible to get a 360 to complete my PS3wii60.

Seeing as not all 360s are defected at all, I do believe that the comment was that they have the possibility of dying, as does every person in this world.
This is just the obvious, Falcon is the new line of 360s, not SKUs. Meaning all new 360s will have the new improvements. IE New Cooling System, HDDs on every model, and 65nm Processors. Alright, the HDDs on every SKU is more of a assumption than the others, but still a possibility.

LMAO!!! I think you just got owned when you spent more $300 on an inferior console! You dumb d!ck!! LOL
I just got a 360 (my second one, first one crapped out on me), my new one has a hdmi port, ans an aditional heatsink atached to the gpu.
I think if you couple the extra heatsink, plus the (future) 65nm cpu...the 360's overheating days will finally be over.

Ok, sad anti-microsoft rhetoric aside (and I have just as much distaste for Microsoft as anyone, admittedly), this kind of business practice is actually quite typical, all over the industry...
Why, financially, would a company deliberately say there's a slightly revised hardware revision of their console coming out, when that news would simply stop potential sales to people who may *never* experience any problems with their console... That's a financial equivalent of cutting off one's hand, and no company would do something like that...
This kind of thing has been going on for years, however, and it's only because some people have had problems with their 360s that this kind of news garners any more attention than any other time;
Now, admittedly, I myself would wait, hearing this news, until the hardware revision of the unit less prone to overheating comes out, but that's because of myself being the kind of person that actively seeks out and closely follows this kind of information... But if companies went out of their way to publish on the evening news in advance, every upgrade they did to their hardware over time to address issues that arose, people would be afraid to even buy a DVD player from Wal-Mart, for fear that they would have a newer hardware revision out in two weeks...

Add to that the fact that the zypher model with the new board layout in addition to the heatsink appears to eliminate the problem anyway...

Yeah, the overheating problem is not really much of a problem for most people. It does help that the new process will be cooler since the board will not get as hot and not flex as much but removing the xclamps is also the way to go for M$ to really fix the problem. If they don't remove them from the new consoles they are still leaving a lot of room for them to fail.

Regardless, the 360 fiasco ... is one of the worst. 33% of units? The PS2 never even got near that. You can say yours broke..that is unfortunate. I do agree Sony should have had better support. However, one of the reasons MS's support is so good, is because their product is so crappy...thus necessitating stellar support to avoid a humongous PR meltdown.
It's like getting good support from the chinese toxic toothpaste company. Sure, we'll send you some replacement tubes, sorry about that! If they're still toxic, please call us back!

well the thing is the first xbox was actually made well. There were only 6 revisions and I've never had one die on me or any of my friends and that was with constant chip swapping, burned games played from crappy media and everything else you could throw at it, still running like a champ from launch. Second system they goofed so there ratio is 1 to 1 right now. If they just fix the damn xclamp they could do away with a hell of alot of there problems

lol. That was the WORST comparison to the 360's defect ever. The only thing that is at stake is what...30 cents a week for a mailing address? Quite easy to pay compared to the possibility of fatality.

Link please?
I thought the x-clamps or w/e were the problem. Does this fix the x-clamp problem?
no, there is no problem with the x-clamp design.....unless it gets really hot...which 360's are known for. It gets so hot and when you factor in the X-clamp design, which pulls on the motherboard, to end up with the motherboard warping....which will likely break some solder joints.
MS can leave the X-clamp the way it is if they want.....just as long as they keep that beast cool.
Hacktek - I to would like to see proof of the new 360's crapping out (the ones with the additional gpu heatsink).
