VGChartz are claiming that weekly sales of the Xbox 360 increased by 50% due to the announced price cut on August 8th. For the week ending August 11, the Xbox 360 sold 55,160 units in comparison to 41,499 for the PS3. Although during the prior week, the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 with 38,852 units sold in comparison to 35,006 for the Xbox 360.

The week ending August 11, 2007 saw two significant events in the Americas. Starting August 8, the Xbox 360 price drop went into effect for all three Xbox 360 SKUs. Additionally, Sony’s new $600 PS3 – with extra storage and Motorstorm – began to become widely available at retail. That said - Xbox 360 sales were above PS3 sales this week since the 60 gig PS3 dropped to $500. Wii, DS, PSP, and PS2 continue selling well this week too – largely in their usual ranges – 85,000-100,000, 100,000-145,000, 50,000-60,000, and 50,000-60,000.

Platform
11-Aug 4-Aug
Wii 86,469 91,946 -6%
DS 126,277 123,736 +2%
PS3 41,499 38,852 +7%
PSP 55,160 55,603 -1%
Xbox 360 52,484 35,005 +50%

While the $479-$449, $400-$350, $299-$279 price drops boosted 360 significantly, it did not have same impact as Sony’s $100 price drop in the initial week. However, with 360 closer to mass market, the increase in sales is likely more sustainable, despite a smaller increase in the initial week. Next, is a look at the top ten software for each current generation platform this week (Wii, PS3, 360), followed by interesting tidbits for the week.

This shows that the cut is a great incentive to the purchase.

What is this? basic economics? of course when the price goes down the demand increases. I thought it was kind of obvious really...

Ok I dont get it...

The 360 sold 13,661 more consoles than the ps3 last week with only 3 days of the actual pricedrop included (8th through the 11th). The week prior the ps3 sold 3846 more than the 360, but then they state the price drop didnt have as much effect for the 360? What am i missing here??

you're not missing anything, these are vgchartz numbers, aka fake numbers.

they are not real sales numbers, and have no actual bearing on reality.

the only real sales numbers in north america are from the NPD.

good. about time this console gets some much deserved sales. but this could also be due to the great games lined up for it for the rest of the year.
