View Full Version : Another way to fix the RRod on Xbox 360 - no towels required
A gamer has put together a proposed new method of fixing a busted Xbox 360 console, which doesn't rely on the towel trick. It involves opening up the Xbox 360, and if your covered under the warranty its probably best to leave it to the 'pro's'. Anywho you can see the full process at Postgamepub.com.

Haven't been able to actually look at the method because the site is pretty much dead (does not load) but if that's all he did then that console will most likely die in like 5 days lol

Yeah
to summarize his guide
Took apart xbox
cleaned chips
reapplied better thermal paste
bent X-Clamp legs out to allow a tighter bond between the heatsink and board (this is what causes 3RLOD to begin with.. board bending and losing connection to BGA GPU/CPU chips)
reassembled.
I figure it will work for another 1-2 weeks before 3RL come back. Oh well. Basically we figured out if you take apart the 360 and do something it will work.

Fixing the xclamp (ore replacing it with a better solution) is a working temporary fix.
Add some better cooling paste and lap the cooler for better cooling to.

Just saw the "tutorial" and it's pretty much nothing new, he kept the clamps which are the problem in the first place and just made the heatsink stick more to the chip. I'm pretty sure that just by opening it up, changing the paste and then reassembling would have given the same result. In the end, his box will die very soon because he left the xclamps there.

Yup. That's what *REALLY* "fixed" it and it won't stay that tense for long. Obviously, why do people think applying thermal paste AFTER the fault "fixes" anything? The problem wasn't some instantaneous over-heat during a cold boot! Arctic Silver may help avoid it ever happening in the first place though, but once the BGA solder beads have broken, it's going to take a reflow oven to fix properly.

that's b/c looking at your sig, you most likely play only GeOW and have already completed CoD2, TR, Kameo...or perhaps you don't even pop any of the rest at all in your daily life. I wonder why you don't own great games like Forza 2:rolleyes:

Yes, that makes absolute sense.....oh wait no, it doesn't. He has obviously played a variety of games based on his sig which would indicate his 360 has been used a good deal. I would say he is the exception not the rule regarding 360 RRoD issues. Don't use flawed reasoning and assumptions to explain something of which you don't know nearly enough about. I think you're the last person who should be rolling their eyes.

What a heat monster the 360 is, it got so hot near my wii the wii powered off!
If this is a safety feature of the wii, at least no wii of death is on the cards!
