View Full Version : Halo 3 looking to surpase Spiderman 3's $151 million opening weekend record
According to Variety, Microsoft wants to reach $155 million worth of Halo 3 sales on launch day, toppling the $151 million achieved by Spiderman 3 during its opening weekend, which happens to be the current record holder for a movie at the box office.
The summer of threequels is winding down, but there's still one more juggernaut third installment everyone will have their eyes on this year. Just don't look for it in theaters.
The videogame "Halo 3" hits store shelves Sept. 25, and Microsoft is positioning it to be the most successful debut of any entertainment property ever with an extensive multiplatform advertising blitz geared to generate debut grosses topping even the biggest of summer tentpole pics.
In its first 24 hours of release in 2004, the second installment of the sci-fi shooter earned $125 million. That number forced many nongamers to take the vidgame biz seriously for the first time.
With "Halo 3," Microsoft's Xbox unit wants not only to top the 2004 figure but to reach $155 million in a single day -- besting the $151 million opening weekend for "Spider-Man 3," the current record holder for a pic at the box office.
Officially, of course, the software giant is hedging its bets.

AH DUH!
Halo 3 is $60 dollars a pop. Spider Man 3 8-15$ a ticket so even if you took a date w u that’s still only $30 max and we all know not very many nerds took a date to spider man 3.

Halo 1 and 2 blew every other FPS out of the water in their times and Halo 3doesn't look like it is breaking away from tradition:cool:.

OK, by that statement I take it that you HAVE NEVER PLAYED ANY FPS before. Just like I said, people who never played FPS's think Halo is the BEST GAME EVAR! only because they are noobs to the genre. People who love the FPS genre "YAWN" when playing Halo's.
I'm a huge fan of FPS's, my PC collection is stacked with wonderful FPS, but when I played Halo....... I was trying not to fall asleep after a half hour. Halo is by far the MOST GENERIC FPS I have ever played. It is just sad how games like that can be so over-hyped, leaving all the good Games such as "bioshock" with less than stellar sales when compared to halo. It's kind of sad really, because there are studios which make really good FPS, and then you have Bunjie, the ass of the industry who only got famous because they were backed by M$.
This my friends is the sign of the Apocalypse, we all can start hiding under our tables.
well on consoles fps weren't that big until halo. There were plenty of fps but none of which made them as big as they were on the pc. after halo fps became a craze on the console with everybody trying to cash in on the money maker. i've said it before i really never got into fps and that was probably due to me not being much of a pc gamer but after playing halo i got big into them. bioshock is going to be an incredible game and i wont take that away from take two because i can't wait for it but halo is just a juggernaut when its released

also you admit the fact that you know nothing about UT as well or even Quake

I played almost all FPS on the PC. I can definitly say that Halo 1 and 2 at the time blew games like Doom 3, Farcry, Battlefield 2 etc. with diverse gameplay and absolutely most polished FPS. Half Life 2 is on par with Halo 2. No game all the greatness that Halo 2 has still. AI is really smart(both sides), the vehicle hijacking and deul weilding was revolutionalized, and the music is just unmatched. No reason to underestimate Halo 3. Name me one game besides Half Life 2 that came out up till the release that matches in all these elements. I still haven't seen one game that beats Halo 2 overall.

i never said there were no fps on a console but there you go again not reading something eventhough you like changing font colors in quotes hoping it helps your arguement. I SAID that halo made fps on the console big, ut isnt even out yet how can it support your arguement. doom for the psx wasn't that big and quake for the consoles didnt make a splash. after halo fps were coming out left and right and were getting recognition. hell its because of halo why theres even a killzone afterall its touted as the halo killer
and dont try and say unreal tournament for the ps2 because it got mediocre reviews and didn't get that much attention which once again supports my arguement, not yours

On topic and PC aside, (hell I loved half life as much as anyone played it and every mission pack known to man.. Quake and doom were not my bag) Halo is the defacto CONSOLE FPS period. You might not PERSONALLY like it but it's the benchmark against which any CONSOLE FPS will be compared.

I agree Halo is something of a defacto console FPS. I attribute this to the emphasis on vehicles, and also due to Bungie's really nice controls. Most FPS games on consoles did crappy jobs porting the PC control schemes over.

Are we in the same dimension? First of all, Doom 3 sucked. Farcry and BF2, I honestly haven't bothered with. But Halo most definitely does not have diverse gameplay. Of course, in MP, everything is all about making due to limited options...but in SP, where you can have scripted events and large, linear progression...the sky is the limit, and Halo didn't really do much with that. The AI was not smart..are you crazy? Half Life 1 had better AI. Mind you, most games have wretched AI. Halo's was above average, but that's not saying much.
Halo's single player was pretty crappy. The good controls meant good multiplayer though. Which is something I honestly don't care about. Games I felt were better (mostly on PC):
single-player:
System Shock 2
Thief 1,2,3
Half Life 1,2
Jedi Knight 2, 3
Republic Commando
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force 1 and 2
American McGee's Alice
Tron 2.0
Actually, I'm going to stop. Almost every single player FPS game was better than Halo's single player stuff. However, I will note I'm intentionally leaving Doom3 OFF that list. Halo's SP is better than that :P
multiplayer or single/multiplayer games:
Call of Duty
Battlefield 1942
Tribes 1, 2, 3
UT2k4
Counter-Strike
Quake3 (yep, sorry)
Those are just the multiplayer games I can speak for. I'm not a huge multiplayer gamer, but those above are the ones I had some extended stints in. I also played BF:Vietnam, but I'd rate Halo MP better than that. BF:V had too many issues.
I've played other MP games as well, for brief periods. The ones up above I played a lot more for a good reason: they were awesome.
Some of those games above had way huge maps. Tribes and UT maps are at least as huge as the largest Halo maps. Other games had smaller maps, but don't mistake the size of the area for the fun of the game. Especially when you have such a low player multiplayer limit.

Those games are pretty old. Never most played any of them because I got into PC shooters because of Doom 3's graphics which was much later. you can't directly compare Halo to Quake or UT because they are arena shooters.
Halo's AI is incredible and haven't seen anything like that in any other game. They flake, take cover, throw grenades together, jump on things, yell out enamy positions, and run and scream when you'r about to smoke the grunts. Haven't seen any game use AI like this until later games. Everything about Halo reaks of polish. even little things like the vehicles decale damage and runaway cars make it the experience that much better. When I mean diverse experience I am talking about how the game's coop, multiplayer, vehicle play, and overall depth. And tell me that the first level of Halo never really touched you? I don't get why people are saying this when Halo beats out most shooters overall.

ok if i missed them tell me what console they came out on
If you're talking good console FPS games, there are far, far fewer..and most of them are recent. I'd say:
Call of Duty series (Playstation1/2/3, Xbox/360)
Metroid Primes (Gamecube, different--and bad MP)
Gears of War (probably better..obviously it looks a lot better...but I have only played a fraction of it, so I can't say whether or not the whole game gels as well as Halo)
Resistance: Fall of Man -- I just bought this last weekend, haven't opened it yet (too busy), but from what I hear, it is generally not as good as gears, but sounds better than Halo...with more hectic MP as well.
but yeah, not much good competition on the console front. I think it's silly to distinguish between PC's and consoles though. Especially when the consoles are in the $500-$600 range...and remember that's headless. You can put together a decent PC for that price without a monitor. For a bit more, you can put a NICE pc together.

They came out on the original xbox, but both were crap.
I love playing CS on PC but on a console its a big no, the same as Halflife.
Halo was desinged to have a pad in your hand, CS and Halflife are for a keyboard and mouse.
L33t haxor or what ever your fuckin name is, stop being a fanboy prick will you.
I personnaly agree that Half life 2 & Halo two are on par with each other but you wont agree due to your imature fanboyism.
If halo was on Playstation then it would be the best game ever, you annoy me with your constant slagging off, of other systems but will not hear a bad word said about anything sony say or do.
I own all 3 console's, and i play on the 360 more due to the games. In time i see the PS3 becoming just as good but at present mine just collects dust.
The only advantage i see the ps3 has over the 360 at present is how quite it is.

Half-life 2's AI was amazing especially if you turned the difficulty up. people would try and break down doors. if that didn't work the AI would have them keep searching for ways to get to you. HL2 blew away halo and halo 2. crap HL1 blew both of them away. halo and halo 2's single player games sucked. and multiplayer wise UT2004 blows both games away. and its a valid arguement to compare them. both halo games were slow paced compared to pc fps. its not even a race.
i could list tons of great fps but sigma already did. and i agree about all the games with him except alice and the thief games which i have never played so i can't comment on them.

I hope you weren't serious about Doom on PSX being even close to the first. Ever hear of Wolfenstein 3D (SNES)? Doom on SNES (with X-BAND modem)? Doom on Atari Jaguar? Doom on Sega Genesis+32x? Super Noah's 3D Ark (skinned Wolfenstein)?! Hell, even Jurassic Park (SNES w/ Surround Sound w00t!) and Toy Story (SNES) had first-person shooter segments, though they weren't from the PC.

Halo2 was launched 3 years after Halo and the same year as Halo2. For a console Halo's AI was surpisingly sophisticated.

It was good for its time. I think most of its fun was that n64 supported 4 player split screen. But if you go back and play it now it has lost most of its magic.
It was rumored awhile ago that Rare was gonna bring it to XBLA. But I really doubt that will happen since EA owns the Bond license now.

In terms of the PC, my trusty old "Blake Stone" Demo got me into FPS back when I was younger. That and "Wolfenstein 3D".
If you wanna go with consoles though... it was "Goldeneye" hands down for me.
I agree that "Halo" really isn't all it's hyped up to be. Yeah it is fun as hell in Multiplayer, but overall it's nothing to go crazy over.
Gimme my UT or 4 player "Goldeneye" death match in the Temple and I am good to go. Although "Call of Duty" games are tons of fun for me too.

aww shiiit! this game was crazy... crazy hard
any one remember Rise of the Triad?
I personally like the story of both Halo's and found the games rather compelling and enjoyable.
Golden eye is still fun, but its limited fun..
I think all of this is subject to opinion... just because a person thinks something is crap doesnt mean I have to think its crap.
