Microsoft's Chris Satchell has commented that MS want to disrupt the video game industry and reach the billions of people that are watching TV. Satchell outlayed a three step approach, which began with focusing on the core market and then jumping into the casual sector who becomes intimidated by a title such as BioShock.

As Nintendo was starting to introduce Wii to the industry (when it was still called Revolution), they constantly used the buzzword "disrupt." Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said the Nintendo DS was "disrupting development" and Wii was meant to "disrupt console gaming" -- and that's exactly how Microsoft phrased their three-pronged approach to expanding the videogame market at Gamefest 2007.

"How do we disrupt this industry and reach the billions of people that watch television?" asked Microsoft Game Developer Group General Manager Christ Satchell during his keynote.

Satchell's presentation harped upon a three-step approach that started with catering to the core market and moving to the casual (or non-user) that's intimidated by an ambitious experience like BioShock or jumping into an online multiplayer session of Halo 3.

Umm ok I dont see the news story here but isnt the goal of any product to expand the market and sell more? I have yet to see a single console manufacturer come out and say "We're are only here for the hardcore and all you pansy solitaire and bejeweled players can get bent" though I will admit I probably would laugh and buy whatever it was just for someone having the balls to say it. :)

I completely agree with you in one sense. All companies want to make money. They want to sell more than the competitors.

The only problem, is when a company (microsoft) comes out and disqualifies Nintendo as even a competitor, and saying "it's for babies and kids" because they are trying to attract all types of users... but then Microsoft comes and uses the same words Nintendo used and basically says "we are going to do what they do".

It makes sense economically to do that, Wii is selling very well, copy what they are doing to sell well. It just looks comical when these executives are kinda seen with their foot in their mouth about some things :)

I havent followed the console slagging since the Wii launch, but didnt Moore say something to the effect of he hoped Reggie Fils-Aime would send him one and kept gushing about it talking about how gamers would get the 360 and a Wii?? I know John Rodman was allowed to open his mouth once...made a comment about the Wii and 14 year olds and hasnt been heard of since...but was there something else? Most of the casual games I have were out before the Wii launched on live, I wasnt aware things had changed much...it just seemed like business as usual.

So far... The Bioshock demo just feels like Half Life 2 with a healthy dose of Prey.

It seems like it will be good-- but yet another one of those titles MS considers to be a system seller, builds tons of hype around, and is forgotten a couple months later.

of course he was going to say that... they all believe that the wii wasn't good enough to be competition... you can be rude by been polite... to me wut he said was that the war was the ps3 an the 360 but for the price of a ps3 you cud get a 360 plus a wii.... and to me that is an insult... sony and ms underestimated the wii....

but now he is saying that hey we want to do what nintendo is doing that is a complement... but of coure they are going to say that they want a cut of that....

It must be different where you are...around here I havent seen much hype at all. The local gamestops are all pushing Halo3, Heavenly Sword and Mario Strikers. There is an awesome looking Heavenly Sword standee I want at the local one though, I dont even have a ps3 but that standee is cool...its a red haired woman with a sword bigger than clouds from FFVII. They didnt have anything for Bioshock other than a line of empty boxes :( I wanted to see one of the Big Daddy's close up.

So far 33% of 360 users have been "Disrupted" so Microsoft sure is going for the kill!

That was my thoughts upon reading this article lol, but not brave enough to post it as you get the abuse from the fanboys that will crawl out of the woodwork at some point in blind defense lol.

Cries of "me too! me too!!!"

Ugh disgusting. Politicians, lawyers, big corporate execs. All born from the same steaming pile.

Yeah, that's the thing. But the funny part was how many Xbox360 fans really took this to heart, and were just echo'ing that sentiment, saying they were going to buy a Wii, and "Wii60 ruelz!! lololol"

I tried to warn them that there were no friendships in this biz...certainly not among the big three. A compliment was nothing more than a backhanded slap to the unmentioned competitor.

Honestly, the biggest compliments MS actually gave, were the stupid stunts it pulled, like renting that barge in Paris for the PS3 launch. The only reason they did that, was because they were trying to distract people from the PS3 launch. The only reason they tried to distract people, is because they feared the PS3. That's a compliment.

I forget the old saying, but it's something to the effect of you don't need to worry about your critics...worry about the ones who constantly flatter you.

edit: the best was how Xbox fans actually got offended when Nintendo didn't also say something nice back to Microsoft.

Yeah. I love the circles.

We will achieve global domination...our plan is clearly articulated with these circles.
