View Full Version : New Wii's thrwarting mod chip hackers? And not just the soft kind
We received an anonymous from someone who claims to have modded over 500 Wii console's that is claiming new versions of the Wii will not work with the standard 'Wiikey 1.2 chip' after updating to the latest firmware. Several days ago it was clear that various software hacks for the Wii had been thwarted but few had actually reported that their hardware mods were rendered useless too. The respective systems throw out the following error as shown in the screenshot sent to us below...
<Center><a href="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/wiiez.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/wiiez1.jpg"></centeR></a>
We tested 3x new Nintendo Wii console with the standard Wiikey 1.2 chip original ,..with all the Wii's from custumers we get a error! Backup games will not Work .PAL systems!
Chips installed good ..we see GAMECUBE to boot the CD..its booting..and then Error Occurred! We asked peoples..they said all 3x they updated the Wiiconsole to 3.0.
We gave the unmodded back to people..we wait for a new bios chip.
So no picture..but im shure you hear more soon. We modded more then 500 Wii's .nojoke..we are not happy with this update of nintendo.

Before you post I think you should think:
Annoymous - Shocker, I wouldnt want people to know who I was either if the information might be false
The screenshot shown I get on my PAL wii with a wiikey (2.2E). A restart and reinserting the disc sorts it.
And your post is also not very clear 'claiming new versions of the Wii will not work with the standard 'Wiikey 1.2 chip' after updating to the latest firmware'
What do you mean new versions of the Wii, that gives the impression of chipset . Or do you mean all Wii's upgraded to frimware version 3.
Im guessing from your post you dont even have a wii because it is not clear what your talking about.

And i also had that screen when i had firmware 2.2E.

LOL:D...Its just getting started...before we start bashing Nintendo keep in mind Cable and Satellite companies have been doing this for years. In this day in age everyone wants there consoles hooked up to the internet so they can now push firmware updates daily if they wanted. So the lesson modders have to learn is if you mod a Wii, mod the internet as well so its useless…

man this bums me out, finally got around to modding my wii, burned a back up of excite truck and i got this error after trying to go through the tutorials, i thought it was just the disc since my paper mario and red steel back ups are working fine.
i have a retail wiikey on a launch day console.
although as far as i know i havent updated to the *most recent* firmware since i just left it on paused while played paper mario. i guess ill go check right now.
EDIT: yea im only on 2.2U and get that message with excitetruck, but i think its high f'n time we see some kinda of update for out wiikeys.
Edit again: rechecked the disc not to same error xD

That sounds like a more general disk read error. If you have a launch console with a WiiKey and it is still booting most disks I wouldn't jump the gun in terms of worrying. Paper Mario is better than Excite Truck anyway ;)

Oh come on now this has been discussed so many times :p
Nintendo blocked every disc that does not have proper labels (e.g. G for gamecube etc)
The wiikey setup disc uses something else, thus now the wii doesn't recognize the disc.
Nothing new, been known since the second the update got released. Fixed by running GCOS before the disc.
ALL BACKUPS run fine.

There is no "WiiKey 1.2" chip. There is a WiiKey 1.2 setup disc, but a genuine WiiKey will run fine regardless of whether or not the setup disc will boot. A WiiKey clone, on the other hand, will not. Clones will not load a real GCN or Wii game until you load the burned WiiKey setup disc and "save settings." Clearly, this major modder is installing clones!
Anyway, MaxConsole is a little late: morp has already released "fixed" WiiKey setup disc 1.2 disc images (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=72223) right here on these forums. It uses GCOS to boot and then load the WiiKey setup disc.

this is complete bullshit......i do modding as well www.gmodz.ca and have done hundreds of wiis and the only time u get this error is if the disk is faulty or there is something wrong with the install. with the new update none of my customers have complained about the modchip not working. only the wiikey setup disc doesnt work.

as I see I think it should be a problem with a new Firmware (3.0) and may be wiikey.
My couple of friends got a problem when update to Firmware 3.0
After update complete the system reboot. In a wii menu channel, it goes black less than 2 secs and have an error message.
"The system files is corrupted, please refer to Wii Operation Manual"
These occur on both Wii Japan and Wii US (modded with wiikey and brand new console which didn't modded)
here is a video clip

You can enter a channel if you can choose any of that (except news channel) and it won't goes black.
You can enter Wii Setting, but no new update. (it show the firmware is 3.0)
My friends has already take out battery, format the system, etc. but no luck for them.
I hope all of you don't have this bad luck brick and goes Black Screen of the death.
PS: more than 10 of my friends got this problem.

I agree 100%. I haven't received 1 phone call either! Trust me, just like satellite TV, when people can't have their 'free' service , the installer's phone gets blown up! This news shouldn't be front page material, it belongs in the funnies' section.

Did your friend's update to 3.0 from a NTSC-J game on a NTSC-U console or vice versa? Check out what happened when people did the 2.2 update from Mario Strikers Charged. Also, is your firmware 3.0U or 3.0J?

I get this message time to time, easy fix. Take out the dvd from the wii, wipe it of, put it in again. Tada!
Works everytime, so I think this is more of a read-error on "dirty" dvds rather than anti-modchip from Nintendo.
EDIT: Only happend with Mario Striker Charged Football, and I got a Wiikey and a PAL wii.
EDIT2: Oh, I forgot to say this, when I updated to 3.0E and tested MSCF it wouldnt work, but reboot the damn machine and it will work.
To get that message without needing to get a bad media, just put in the Wiikey Config Disc and you will get it. Easy to fake isnt it?
OH AND NINTENDO FIXED THE NEWS CHANNEL!!! (THANKS!!! =) =) =))

I've modded my share of these things myself and I will tell you what causes that screen right now. It has nothing to do with the new update. That screen is caused be either crappy media or a bad burn. It is a media problem, pure and simple. Switch to some better media like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and burn at 8X with ImgBurn and you will have no such DRE's like that. Of course there is also the possibility of a crappy installation as well.

I just updated mine after reading this thread, I am now on Firmware 3.0U using yaosm 1.7 and everything is working fine.. better infact :)
only difference I found is that I now have an annoying digital clock that I never noticed before, and when I load a disk the drive fades the blue light in and out instead of flickering twice now.
I have only tested it tho on a regular backup from my region, havent tested PAL yet.

i have a ntsc-u launch wii with geuine wiikey update to 3.0u and everything is fine. i play original imports, back up imports, and reg back ups. i had a burner problem looks like my laptop burner is a POS, got an external burner and gcos bootdisk works fine to load wiikey setup disk. everything works as advertised just need to use gcos to load bootdisk. you may need to check your region lock out on your wii after your update. i didnt do mine till after the update anyway. my friend said he had to go back in and turn it off again, i dunno maybe he just forgot what he set it at.

Hmm I've always wondered why console manufacturers haven't just made their dvd drive read the ATIP signature of the disc, if it says something like Taiyo Yuden or MCC, then it's obviously a pirated game or movie.
BlackDove
08-09-2007, 03:05 PM
Because the dev units are supposed to read recordable media, plus the newer generation of consoles are designed to be media-function friendly.

stop giving them ideas! damn you boy! lol j/k j/k Of course, chip makers would just emulate what is being read everytime a disk is inserted anyways, or return a "accepted" value anyways, so it wouldn't matter if they did something like that.
Yea, I hear all kind of claims all the time... esp on the web. This still remains to be seen. The new update has caused some problems, PAL to NTSC region'd disks, GC region'd disks, Wiikey setup disks, but those things I can live without anyways. ... but not much more problems thereafter....
HOWEVER, the fact that Nintendo has a message directing towards modded system owners, is a clear sign they are aware (i think they are aware ever since the first Nintendo came out... ), and perhaps one day will terminate some service to modded system owners... like online play or the sort. ... like Xbox has. Remains to be seen... remains to be seen..

Online play isn't really an issue with this one since there's no centralized service, but I agree, it does feel like they're plotting something.

Sorry, but this is COMPLETELY WRONG
No modchips have ceased functioning properly because of the 3.0 update. All the update actually blocked were Action Replay, and a few other unauthorized disks like the WiiKey setup disk.
There are already work-around for it, as the block only works by scanning one particular part of the disk. You can either boot GCOS first, then insert the "blocked" disk, or you could use this:
http://psx-scene.com/forums/nintendo-news/58315-wii-gc-wii-gc-emu-mplayer-config-bootdisk.html
This will help you create images that work with the new update.
Max Console, please be more responsible and actually do two seconds of research before posting an article that isn't true. You're misleading people by being too lazy to post anything other than what you received in a random, anonymous email.

Heres what wiikey team posted on their site:
[07.08.08] Wii firmware 3.0 issues
Nintendo has released firmware 3.0 via online updates. It will NOT brick or disable Wiikey; however, base and config discs will not load 'natively', neither will any other GC disc with El Torito standard header format. WiiNewz have reported that there are already tools available for building bootable config and setup discs, as well as other discs with applications and emulators. We are currently researching why the El Torito format no longer works. Once this is completed new versions of the config and base system disc will be made available.

I bet people who have bought modchips and found this happening are pissed off now... can you actually remove a modchip and have the console work as normal after installing it I wonder?

No need: They work just fine... it's only the GC homebrew discs that have trouble booting and GCOS works around that with no problem. In one very specific situation, the inability to boot a GC homebrew discs could cause a chip to be non-functional: a freshly installed WiiKey clone needs the user to run the real WiiKey setup disc once. As already stated, it can be run using GCOS, so it's only a problem for people unaware of that.
