Hi,

I have a PAL Wii, which I got chipped a few days ago. I want to play NTSC games on it, but cannot get any to work - i get to the start menu and then the game blacks out and the machine crashes when you try to start the game.

I asked the person who chipped it if it was the Wiinja chip he installed and he said yes, but I'm not so sure - how would I go about checking for that?

I haven't used my Wii since February, I got really bored after an initial expenditure of a couple hundred quid on the release games, I also haven't been online with it since then and never got any of the online updates anyway - I only wanted it for the gaming feature, all the other fluff I can use my PC for, I thought. Has this had any effect on why NTSC games won't work, was there any kind of region unlocker relased for this kind of situation?

I also have read about Super Papaer Mario (US vers.) frying bricking machines if the appropriate firmware is not already on your machine. I bought Mario Strikers and have read that that automatically updates your firmware... is this true? I haven't used the game online, if that makes any difference?

I'm a bit stuck because the reason I wanted my chipped was to play American releases... and they aren't working! Have I just made a big boo boo, or is there a way to sort this out?

I haven't actively gone on nintendo's update page since January, so I am not sure what firmware I currently have, how do I check for that?

Thanks.

I think this is the list to see which games work for region to region

you can update to v. 3.0E now through internet but i think you should just stay at 2.2 cause there's not really something really big from 3.0

to prevent anything possibly going wrong with e.g. paper mario, patch isos with brickblocker to remove the updates.
Also, might want to check if yer chip's region-free option so to speak is enabled (wiikey for example has this option)
I think you can also patch ntsc games to appear as pal, which might help.

Thanks for replies.

I don't know how to test to find out what chip is in my machine. I know it's chipped because I have a back up of my Zelda which is PAL and works fine, but outside of that, I'm stuck.

I have Trauma Center and Hajime No Ippo, both NTSC and one is Japanese, the other is American, and neither will get past the start screen.

What is the default firmware that came with the first batch of Wii's? I think mine would be very close to that, is this a firmware issue btw?

And am I right in thinking that Mario Strikers does give you a firmware update as it boots? If yes, what version is that? Because that's what I have right now.

Not every ntsc game works, trauma centre is one of them.
