Hi there, I installed a wiikey recently and everything works fine, but sometimes in the middle of a game (typically while loading a new part) I get a disc read error. Pressing the eject button and putting the disc back in works every time and I can continue playing where I was, but this is quite annoying. I'm using quality TDK media (DVD-R) and a lite on combo drive, burning at 4x (tried 2x also).

I only have a couple of games at the moment, could the image files be the culprit (both were uploaded by the same author).

Is it possible bad soldering is to blame?

try a different brand of media (ritek GO5) if it still happens, try burning one on some elses burner , and if it still happens after that , try burning one on a pioneer drive. This is almost certainly a media problem.

make sure that your pc is doing nothing else whilst burning, and be sure to use imgburn to do it.

best regards

This is almost certainly a media problem.

Happens to me from time to time.. setting drive speed to 3x cut back on those errors for me.

I just bought a multimeter and I now have perfect connections right to the 3 legs on the chip as well as the other 3 points. I now can boot games but I get it to work but randomly like once or twice in a row and then it get dre's until I take the power off? and play with it(maybe something is heating up or the drive is bailing too soon?). It seems to work when it feels like because I constantly get DRE's and I did set the wii to 3x.

Can wii set the drive to 1x?

It seems like it gonna load (the screen goes black the disc is spinning and then it doesn't work. I think wee need the drive to spin slower.

I can see my wii actually stay at a black screen when I turn it on for a few sec sometimes. the disc is spinning trys a 2nd times and then the GUI comes up with no game. I think maybe I should try adjusting the cd laser POT???

exactly , why do you think lowering the read speed works? because there is problem with either media / burner / burn process.

I know some people will swear that its not this and that, and that it does it with verbs etc etc.

but hey all i can say i have never had a problem with pioneer drives (111 and just upped to 112) burnt at 4x using imgburn on ritek g05 dye disks on a pc that is doing no labour intensive work.

how have you installed your chip, is it a complete wire installation or have you quick soldered any of the points? I would not try adjusting the pot. i would investigate other avenues yet, not one wii have i seen that has had to have this done on it yet.

I'd suggest experiment burning at different speeds if you can. Try someone else's burner. Afaik tdk's really good so that shouldn't be your problem.

I adjusted to pot and that did not work either. My drive pot values

Factory = 689 originals work, backups random rarely though
1st adjust = 625 originals work , backups random rarely though
2nd adjust = 572 originals work , backups random rarely though

no change still random
so I will be going back to 689ish

wiikey is wired. I got so go at soldering to this crap from this install I changed wiring to 28 guage and still random

everything checked with a multimeter so am am going with the disc/burn now also. This dvd drive just must be extremely picky

OK well can you source some confirmed backups from someone else to try.

can you try different media.
different burner
different system
different software

i would not touch the install from now on till i have tested this. It could be you have faulty chip but i doubt it normally they work or they dont.

You can use the best quality disks you like but no good if the burner / soft / system that burns them isnt doing it right

IMGBurn
RitekGO5
Pioneer burner
system that is doing nothing else.

should be jobs a goodun. check the forums, lots of people have had problems using `top quality` disks such as verbs etc etc

Well all I can say is I had the exact same problem, Get into a game and DRE inthe middle of a level or while switching levels,or load screens, Eject and reinsert (sometimes this would take 2 or 3 times to work) and Walla back in Business. I was using Verbatim's 16x DVD-R burning at 2x-8x.

Switched to Maxell 16x DVD-R burning at 8x, and ONE DRE'S in 2 weeks, and NO Boot Problems. :) I'm using a HItachi 16x DL Burner came with my GAteway gt5014h desktop last year(not sure of the burner Model #).

Hope this Helps.
