I tried to mod my first legless chip with the Wiijii. It worked for like 20 minutes perfectly then I took it to my freinds house and only 2 backuped games would work on it (regular games worked fine), when other backups were put into it, it said "disc read error" (these games were tested on another WII and they do work). Tried to do some resoddering but now no games play and the disc on the screen and drive keeps spinning, the game never loads. Is the laser drive screwed or what ? and Ideas on how to salvage this situation?

get it looked at by a pro. It doesnt sound like your installation was your problem in the first place.

Each and every console laser is different that is why they have a potentiometer on them , each laser is set at factory, so in some cases a disk may work on one console but not on another. some backups worked, if you get the disk is unreadable then this is more than likely that the media / burner is just not good enough for this console.

cant go wrong as long as you dont have the pc doing anything whilst burning.

if you get the "an error has occurred please restart the wii" etc etc then this is bad solder or problem with ribbon lead.

hope this helps.

Your knowledge is very welcomed, thank you, i did not know the lasers were different and that each Wii would treat different media differently.
Damnit, now we went and unsoddered the Wii drive and removed the modchip... things are definitely worse, no games works and the cd just keeps spinning (it does not say "disc read error" or go into the ground and load) just spin spin spin....

Basically have a perfectly good wii MINUS the WII DRIVE...

Monkey that is very good info moving foward, i will remember to try different media.. just dont like the wii being that picky!!

would love some troubleshooting tips from here to see if i can salvage this drive... .. any mastermind ideas?

open her up, take high quality photos, making them infocus and well lit (you know the drill).

see if we can have a look-see ;)

its not so much that the wii is picky, it may be just that circumstances dictate that the games that work on your mates might not be of the best qualtity and his wii is a bit better at reading them.

dont take the above comment the wrong way ;)

Just one question mate, I have exactly that setup there, how important is it to turn off underrun protection when you burn wii discs ?

My wii isn't modded yet so I haven't tried anything in it obviously, it's a DMS if that helps at all.

i have never had a prob with the few test disks i have, with buffer under-run on, i havent had to mess with any settings.

UPDATE

well I got my hands on 3 more wii's, havent done any modding yet. Something really wierd is going on. The drive still doesnt work in the current Wii, when I put the so called broken drive into a new wii THE GAME LOADS UP PERFECTY FINE!

When I take the new drive (from the new wii) and put it into the old wii, it also works fine BUT when I put the so called broken drive back into the original wii IT DOESNT WORK! (disc does not load) what the heck is going on ??

New wii with old drive works, old wii with new drive works fine, old drive with old wii DOES NOT WORK... hmmmmm

any ideas are welcome

mod one of the new drives and get it working on the new wii and then try that drive in the so called btoken wii. I want to now the result. I am having the exact same problem I think I just don't have an extra wii to test it out.
