A new build of DSHobro is now out and about - this application is a homebrew web browser for use with the DS and looks in a very much useable state.

Description

DSHobro is a homebrew that lets you surf the web on your DS. It is based on a PC application that parses web pages, and sends the result to the DS. Version 0.1 alpha was released long ago, in april 07, but was just a tiny demo of the possibilities offered by the PC/DS mechanism. DSHobro 0.2 now takes full advantage of this mechanism and allows you to really surf the web, actually read text and view images (text is clear enough to be read) and so on. Some of the usual navigation possibilities are available such as the "back"/"forward"/"refresh"(...) buttons. Also, the server application supports multiple simultaneous connections, allowing several people to use DSHobro at the same time, with only one instance of the program. You may also use DSHobro from a remote location: if you run the server on your own PC, you can surf the web with your DS from any wifi access point (if you know your PC's ip address).

Why does homebrew for DS sometimes have to have that .gba file. It sucks for me, because I don't have a slot 2... I want this!!

I thought if you had a passme type device instead of a slot 1 (r4, m3 simply) you would use the gba version

EDIT:
Ok you only need a slot 1 device to run this. I just put this on my r4ds and it works just as described.

It's a bit slow and cumbersome to control but that's ok pages are rendered just as they look on a PC.

are you addicted to web? nds can barely 'read' signal from my access point while with my psp i can go outside building and still have low ping.

i'm not a fanboy btw.

I can't stand it. It's so slow sometimes I just want to throw the DS out the window. :D

I think the program is pretty awesome. I wonder how much further Costello will take this thing. Anyone who complains about this, or questions why someone would make such an app, is, quite frainkly, a fucking idiot. If you're looking for your computers IP, run a command prompt (Start>Run>type CMD and press enter - or in Vista Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt), then type ipcfg /all

It'll list everything you need to know, and more.

you mean ipconfig /all right? i see my IP address but not the port. i keep getting the black screen error of cant connect, please use different ip/port.

edit: i used netstat -a and other commands and tried using the ports of listening and established. nothing works. i guess i am one of the unlucky few who cant use this homebrew :(

You might be a fanboy if .................

you deny being a fanboy. :)

But I agree ... whats the point really when it needs a PC app. I can live without the web for the few mins while taking a **** ....

Let me turn on my PC so I can use my DS to surf the web ... when someone releases aapp that can use the memory cards of the R4/M3 etc to cache web sites as I browse them with my computer OFF then I might be interested.

Far from useless. The PC does all the heavy lifting and sends it to your DS - it circumvents the need for extra memory or a faster CPU. This program is 10x faster than the official browser because of that. If you want to use it with hotspots, forward your port to the PC and then change the ip address from your PC to your router.

Looking forward to updates because this is going to be the browser to beat.

You know I rarely post, I usually just browse through the threads, but some of the above responses warrant this post. For all of you who are saying that if you need a computer on there is no point to this, you are completely failing to grasp the concept of this homebrew. If you actually took the time to read, it says it functions from remote locations, meaning ANYWHERE there is a wifi hotspot, making the accessibility of this app completely identical to that of the PSP or the Opera DS Browser. I don't know about you but many of the people I have met from middle school to college often leave their computers on anyways, torrenting or just being lazy or what not. If you are really an energy saving pro-green peace advocate and you MUST turn your computer off whenever you aren't at it then good for you and I guess this is useless. But for everyone else this is a very good step forward and Costello deserves a good amount of praise for advancing what has as of late been a pretty stagnant field of homebrew. I for one know that this will come in handy to me as I will be at a school where the entire campus has wifi, and I don't pay an electric bill so my computer will always be on. I now have internet access everywhere I go. And you are saying this is pointless to me? Psshhht.

I wonder why there can't be software built to just access the internet from the DS without needing a server app running. The DS connects to the internet, so seems like it should be able to browse it. Of course, I don't develop so what i say means nothing.

It isn't your internet IP address it is your computers IP. First I tried with a website that tells you your ip but that didn't work. Just go into view network connections on your computer then right click on your wireless network and click status. Then select the support tab and your IP address that you enter into the program is there. Good Luck! Can't wait for the next version:D

Ok. I got my IP and the port. I put them in and then instantly get a Wi-Fi error.
Does this thing work with the Nintendo Wireless Wi-fi Adapter? If so, how?

Of course it can access the Internet and download pages in very little time. It's interpreting and displaying the pages correctly that goes slowly due to the very limited power of the DS. Have you used the Opera browser?

You must modify the drivers before the USB Wifi stick will work at all with homebrew. More info is available at the GBAdev forums, in a stickied topic in one of the DS forums.
