View Full Version : jEnesisDS v0.4 - Sega Megadrive/Genesis emulator for DS
A new build of jEnesisDS has been released (as part of the GBAX contest) - a Sega Megadrive/Genesis Emulator for use with the DS. According to early feedback, compatibility is pretty high and the emulator is certainly worth a blast.

There's a new build out that improves compatibility and also allows for software rendering.

You shouldn't have to patch the games. The only thing that needs patching is the jEnesisDS.nds file. While the R4 should have autopatching, you could try using DLDIrc to manually patch it with the R4 DLDI file.

Well it should autopatch for you, but we'll go with manual. Go http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI and download DLDIrc. Install with the R4 patch, it doesn't matter how many more but you need R4. Now once it's all fine and installed, right click jenesis.nds, and select R4DS Patch (that's not it exactly, but you get the picture). Then make sure it runs all fine, and goes from:
Old Driver-- Default
New Driver-- R4DS (Revolution 4 DS)
And tells you to press any key to exit. That should work.

There's a nifty thing in the download called a "ReadMe" file. Please read it.

It's taking much of the DS's computing power just to emulate the core CPU, and the main sound processor is at least that powerful as well. Lordus stated this at PocketHeaven:
It comes down to emulating a Z-80 on the ARM7, right? The CPU is more than fast enough to do that, so I imagine there must be some other complication?
Well, i would say the Z80 is the smaller problem. It takes up far less than 50% of the needed calculation power for the Genesis sound system. Even if the Z80 would run at full speed on the ARM7, which is achievable, there is still all the synchronization AND the FM core. The FM core itself needs about the same power as the main cpu (Motorola 68000). On PC based emus the FM core uses a lot of lookup tables to make emulation faster, but those wont fit into the tiny DS ram.
PSG sound is possible in my opinion. I already have some games running with full PSG sound and just about 1-2 FPS slowdown - hardly noticable.
Those games are ones that just use the 68000 for PSG sound though (i.e. Sonic, Gunstar Heroes).
DSMasterPlus uses the DS-PSG for PSG emulation and the author was so kind to show me his code. I didnt have time to look into it yet, but ill see if it can make any difference.
