Microsoft's Shane Kim has briefly discussed the portable gaming market and for now expressed that MS are content in letting Sony and Nintendo 'beat the hell out of each other'. When directly asked whether MS were planning to enter the market themsleves, Kim answered with a shrug and a dodgy face.

The already have entered the portable games market haven't they?

The Zune can play games :)

And if you expect anything more than that from Microsoft, you are on to a loser.

I cannot see how they will shoehorn a PC into a portable form factor the way they did with the home console.

Not to mention that handheld devices are moved around, dropped, etc. so they have to be built with a bit better quality than microsoft seems capable of.

MS: We'll let Nintendo and Sony beat the hell out of each other in portable market

I think that should've read:

MS: We'll let Sony and Nintendo fight in the portable market and watch Nintendo beat the $#!t outta Sony while we're at it.

:D

But seriously. I think Microsoft wants to enter the handheld market with a device dedicated to playing games but they know they got a PR nightmare on their hands already with the 360 and it'll only carry over to that device.

I think MS mean "we'll let Nintendo beat the hell out of Sony" i think they'd be on a loser if they tried to enter the handheld market now.

Translation: "Our E3 presentation sucked and we can't afford to be booed by the crowd again".

Also don't diss the PSP just yet. Selling half as many as its closest competitor the DS it will do great things with another price drop and a redesign.

Why did there E3 presentation sucked? They showed some pretty good games all coming 2007.

Yes sure selling double the amount of ds is not a big deal its a head to head competiton.. :D

there are rumors of another ds redesign. which perhaps nintendo is holding onto for such an occasion. selling twice as many consoles is one thing when the numbers are low, but when one of them is in the mid 40 million range, around 45 million and the other is around 22 thats another.

the margin is increasing steadily. not decreasing. though looking at the psp, its doing decent for sony's first try, but considering it has the word playstation on it, its not selling up to sony's expectations i would expect. they probably thought they would kill nintendo in the handheld market.

i'm not sure a redesign would help sony that much and if they dropped the price nintendo could drop the ds' as well. and it wouldn't probably hurt nintedno because there sales would spike enought to make up the lost revenue.

When did their presentation suck? Look at Sony's 06 Riiiiiiiiidge Racer laugh up. Same thing and the rest of their conference was fine.

well sony got made fun of for theres.

did you watch the feed of the ms E3 event? it was silent. you heard a single person laugh a couple of times, showing that it wasn't that you couldn't hear the crowd, but that the crowd wasn't that excited. peter moore didn't seem excited all that much. it seems the game lineup for Christmas will be solid, but his claims it will be the best lineup for Christmas ever was a little over exaggerated. you should watch the event if you can find it somewhere to see the reactions. they just weren't that good. and there was nothing that blew anyone away. i think they and us where expected some unexpected things.

Well with them being the 1st presentation, and the largely scaled down E3, I am not suprised.

I will let anybody who wants to get hyped up over the K2 demo, the halo killer (wasn't K1 supposed to be the halo killer?), but seriously just let the games get released without all this, presentation hype.

more like they took a look at the DS sales and realized there was no way in hell they could ever compete with them.

psp is only doing badly compared to the DS, in any other retail sector 20m+ sales would be a resounding success.

almost any other sector. the GC sold around 22 million i think and it was a failure. xbox sold around 24 or 25 million and it was "a huge success".

a failure to maybe nintendo...they expected to sell more. Even mario and pokemon couldn't save the GC. As for the Xbox...MS was probably happy to sell at least 15 mil... so 25 was a huge sucess

clearly they can't compete.

Sony: My dad's bigger than your dad.
Nintendo: No! MY dad is bigger than YOUR dad.
Microsoft:: My Dad's a pussie.

No making money is a success, xbox never did but gamecube did so xbox was at best neither a failure or a success for that reason.

I still consider it a success because they were able to get a foothold in the console market even at a loss. Nintendo already had a foothold with many consoles before it.

Thats why I say niether a success or failure because economically it was a failure and getting to the market it was a success so balances each other out.

Ouch... couldn't imagine a handheld overheating in my hands. That would be sure to hurt.

Wonder if sony manufactured the batteries for the PSP, since all the other ones seem to be prone to exploding.

As for the showings, What where you expecting from all of them? All the new systems are out, the games are reported on an almost a hourly basis, the only thing people were looking forward to was how close the KZ2 showing would be to the CGI farce from 05. Even that wasn't anything amazing, some sites say its close to the demo, yeah like motorstorm was.

They all had games to show that everyone has been following forever. As for another portable system, it wouldn't be able to compete. This gens portables are too far ahead for a new machine to even come close, plus like someone else said they have bigger things to worry about. Getting stable hardware out and getting the price lower to cut into all the people seriously contemplating that $500 PS3.
