Speaking to Bloomberg, Microsoft's Shane Kim indicated that an Xbox 360 price cut was definitely on the cards despite no announcement on the subject at E3. Kim remarked that MS need to compete effectively and part of that aim includes getting the system ready for a mass market price point.

The Redmond, Washington-based company needs to lower Xbox's $299 to $479 price to increase sales and lure customers who aren't interested in traditional combat and racing video games, Shane Kim, vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, said in an interview. He declined to say when a price cut may be announced. It won't happen at this week's E3 games conference, he said.

``We need to compete effectively for that customer and part of that is getting to the mass market price point for the console,'' said Kim. ``We definitely are working on that area.''

would be more effective to get a working, reliable machine for the mass market instead!!!

do people look like they enjoy wasteing their money, on an unreliable machine at any price... let alone a cheap one... oooh forgot obviously they do, youve sold bucket loads of em... ;)

Yeah I agree, I'd prefer the console with its warranty to be a realiable machine rather than go through all the fuss to get it repaired, sent back to mine etc.

People will get pissed off if it keeps breaking despite the Warranty, they wont want to keep repeating the same process to get their XBOX 360 Repaired.

However getting back to topic, I think I can see the price cut coming once they have the Elite SKU in PAL Territories and Japan first, then the price cut should come or maybe when the holiday season comes we'll see it.

Price cut = more sold xbox = more RODs = more expensive for MS ;) :D

You know...they could just fix the problem of the Three Rings of Dead.

But no, cheaper parts, more Rings of Death, and less money for M$.

Sounds like a lose-lose situation right now, so unless MBull$ chan ges the way they make the 360, I am not buying one.

i think they are holding on to the price cut to counter anything nintendo and sony have up there sleaves rest of this week. i think its ready to go and they know what prices they are going to go with. i think they will hold onto the current prices until they feel like not lowering them will hurt them.

Yep, exactly. I think they held back during their presentation as well. Going first, you always have to have some suprises for the end.

By saying working it makes you think they are squeezing someone for production costs and probably even worse components and build quality, either that or they are squeezing the retailers mark up.

Anyone ever think they are probably waiting on the 65nm chips to be ready for shipping before a price drop so they get better reliability and a lower price?? Of course not that would require thought and would fly in the face of fanboyish ranting and speculation.

We all know that is coming but its ovious pressure is on to cut the price right now not when new hardware is available. And faith is lost in microsofts ability to solve the hardware issues at the moment.

My thoughts exactly. They've been teasing it for awhile now so they'll probably announce it on the last day of E3.

So your point is...what? We've all discussed the 65nm update to the 360 on these forums, and we know that they'll drop the price when they do that but they don't HAVE to wait for that or they could just announce the price cut for September.

Ha ha ha, do you know what they would do to current sales for the 360? Everybody would hold off until September and sales would plummet.

They are going to let sales continue as they are, then make them increase largely but an "unexpected" price cut.

"One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic." -Joseph Stalin

"one tripple-ring of death is a tragedy, a million is statistic" - Bill Gates

they will wait until it is clear if the ps3 price cut has an effect or not. if the ps3 sales rise significantly, which might or might not happen, as it still has nearly to none games, then we will see a 360 price cut.

More than likely, that would be the intelligent thing to do, but with Sony playing words about how sales have "doubled", they may take that with high importance and just decide to cut it right now.

A man once said when debating everyone not buying gas for 1 day, "It wouldn't make a difference, they'd have to buy twice the gas the next day." In other words, the sales may go down for a month but in September they'd surely triple and make up for the loss.

So is it going to happen anytime soon? I have $300 and was thinking of buying a wii, but after E3 I'm not digging the casualness stuff. I'm really hoping for a cut because I want to play Assasins Creed.

edit: When is microsofts annual gaming event "X07"?

X07 was in January I believe. But you can get a 360 even before they cut, just buy a Core 360. I would personally suggest just waiting for the price cut or when you have 100 bucks more for the premium. But, one thing you should do for sure, wait until E3 is over before you do anything with that money.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to save up for a premium since the core isn't really worth it imo. Maybe by the time I have enough money for a premium the price will be dropped.
