From this point on, the xbox 360 will still have a general 1-year warranty, but for reasons that display the three-red lights error, the 360 will be covered for 3-years from time of purchase. Furthermore, anyone that paid for repairs caused by three red lights in the past, will be retroactively reimbursed within the next coming weeks.

Why no full recall and replacement? They know its needed (when they have a good hardware to replace it with)

lol. That's a good question actually.
Good news though for 360 owners. True it's not as good as a hardware fix, but seeing as they already bought a 360 if their 360 breaks they will get that hardware fix, not to mention for free.

I'm So F***ing Pissed, I forked out 50 quid to a repair team to fix my xbox 2 weeks ago, because my warranty ran out a month before my xbox broke. And now they've pushed the warranty back!
I'm so annoyed.

Seems a very sincere apology so lets hope they take it further and actually slove this issue properly, but got to give them respect for the apology for once about something they got wrong.
I notice it says previous 1yr warranty 2 in some countries well thats the european union countries then that have the automatic 2 yr warranty that they forgot to tell us in the first place about.

Better late than never but like others have said this isn't really addressing the issue.
@ the person above who talked about a recall. A recall sounds bad so what do they do, repair them as they break (basically a recall) but don't call it that. MS are kind of sneaky like that.

i'm not going to congratulate or praise microsoft. they have acted like idiots, firstly making a console they knew would have this problem and mass producing it, then completely DENY there was a problem and then force people to pay for extended warranties. I can't believe how bad its been.
so happy this problem is being addressed and it's long been known the 3RLOD have been fixable, but fixing it meant admitting there was a problem, in the first place which they wasn't willing to do.

So, youre telling me that you bought an extended warranty because of this red light fault?
Personally I buy extended warranties to protect me from possible accidental damage and breakdown after 1 year. if microsoft hasve extended their warranty for 3 years. It will not cover anywhere near as much as your purchased extended warranties have.
the 3 red light failure is not one specifc fault, it is just an indicator to say there is a "general hardware failure" its not a specific component that can be replaced. they say the have done things to try to prevent the problems. but it isnt just one failure. its like if i turn on my pc and have no dispolay but have several beeps. that normally tells me i have had a general hardware faiilure. probably the mainboard but it could be anything on the board.
Microsoft will refund anyone who has paid them for a repair. no they wont refund you if you took it to your local repair shop or had a 3rd party repair it. its like having a local mechanic replace your engine in your car then expect your car manufacturer to pay you back. if you have a fault with a product. take it to the dealer, this is what they mean when they say they offer the best service.

Notice though it is *only* for the Red Ring of Death issue - so if your hard drive fails or the DVD drive stops reading (the latter is one I hear about quite a bit).
I'll still stick to my plan to wait another year on the 360 and the PS3 - the former because of quality control, the latter just because there's nothing to play yet.

Q: How does this affect my extended warranty bought from my retailer?
A: You’re still covered under your existing warranty for issues outside the scope of this specific three-year warranty.

Well it's only fair that they do this, still they're basically putting water in a bucket with a hole, so this will not really solve the problem. People don't really want extended warranties and the like; I think what they want is to know they won't need that warranty, but what they hey, trying to alleviate the problem is more constructive than denying there is a problem to begin with.

As much as I'd love to see them recall every 360 and instal the cooling fix, I don't see that happening. Sony, Nintendo, especially Microsoft would never admit there was a problem with every console of theirs out there. Plus, 11 Million consoles would be pretty hard to do all at once, you know?

Over 11 million 360's sold and out of that lot their hasnt been an insane amount of dead ones (bare in mind you have to facter in the bandwagon people and fanboy zealots who analize Sony and Ninty) Yes of course their has been too many problems for too many people but basing your assment of the problem on how mnay posts you can find online from someone claiming they had a problem isnt exactly accurate, I have had 2 360's since launch and both have been 100% fine and both have been played VERY often, whereas I have had 2 out of 5 ps2's since its launch have problems both were the drive (which was garbage) And I can tell you Sony's warranty system was crap they did everything possible to avoid helping me out in both cases, atleast MS have done SOMETHING and are generally good at sorting them out, my cousin had his 360 get the 3rlod and it was modified (firmware) they had it colelcted and replaced within 2 weeks with a nice enw one not refurbished and it had a bettr samsung dvd drive in it as opposed to his previous Hitachi, I know this isnt a case to represent all but the way people constantly bash MS is ridiculous I would rather have a 360 pack in within a 3 yr period and get a it fixed or a replacement for free than fork out £400 for Sony's garbage or £180 for Nintendo's kiddie last gen rip off toy.

Q: Have you identified a root cause that can lead to failure?
A: There is not a single issue that we can point to as being a problem. We test the product extensively, including accelerated life testing, but the nature of the console itself is very complex, as it’s a consumer electronic product that contains more than 1,700 different components and 500 million transistors.
There are a variety of scenarios that can cause a general hardware failure. Only the indicator (the three flashing red lights) is always the same.
So Microsoft won't admit to knowing the cause of the three red lights? I realize it's not always the same. But if ~95% of the problems can be fixed with the same methods found in the forums, then it must mean that most of them are the caused by the same thing.
Most of all I'm annoyed at how they try to confuse and awe people with their "1,700 different components and 500 million transistors" crap. A lot of computers have more than that and they don't have NEARLY as many problems as the 360 did.
Don't get me wrong though, I love my 360, but I too am a sufferer of the 3 red lights and I had to wait 3 weeks to get it repaired. This is still good news.

The problem with your opinion is the same as mine and everybody else. Is just that. I had 2 PS1 and 3 PS2 and currently own 2 PS3 no problems at all, I bought an Xbox 360 Bam!! I'm in my fourth, and what you say is fast replacement ... wrong it took 2 months for microsoft to return the first time, never has been less than 1 month.
So my opinion is Sony did a better job on testing their system even when I aknowledge that they also had problems in the past. For you is the other way around... who is right ..none. Time is money for me if you let me wait 2 months to fix a systems I already lost thousand ... much more than a PS3 cost, I will also pick a wii with what is left.:)

A. I can give the 360 a TROD in about 2 seconds, you pull out either the power cable or the video cable.
B. The first failed Elite didn't happen til a month later, and there hasn't been anyone saying their elite has failed since so it seems the 33% rate isn't the same with the Elite.
C. That's not an Elite, it's a 360 with a case mod. Elites are blacker, look at the HDD, it's Brown, not Black or even Burnt Black.
So Microsoft won't admit to knowing the cause of the three red lights? I realize it's not always the same. But if ~95% of the problems can be fixed with the same methods found in the forums, then it must mean that most of them are the caused by the same thing.

They said that because there are a ton of things that can cause the TROD, and not all of them mean the console is broken, but people that get it will automatically jump to the conclusion that it's broken before just checking everything.

i wouldnt be pissed if i had already bought an extended warrntee, id be really really pissed if id just sold my dead 360 on ebay for next to nothing.
have to agree this is a good gesture from MS, but id still be unhappy knowing my console is very liable to break if its actually used, hopefully they will be adding the new heatsinks with every one the repair too.
I think the damage to their name has already been done, doing this is only highlighting it even more.

Ok if you are too absorbed into defending microsoft and couldn't understand what i was saying, i'll explain it.
Firstly i came into this thread to express my oppinion, or is that not allowed? I have had several 360's that have all broke, and had useless customer service trying to reolve the problems.
Secondly, microsoft has denied all existence of any problem, and making hardware changes would mean there was a problem in the first place.
And for your information, read the thread after this and see the quote..
"The company also admitted it has been forced to make in their eyes an unacceptable number of repairs to the console after key hardware failed"
So whatever. You don't see me bitching about other people, just microsoft which has treaten me like **** and ive wasted alot of money in the process, so their is no need to for you to quote me back in that manner.

Maybe you didn't understand me, I wasn't defending Microsoft, I was saying the idea that they purposely put the console out there with faults so they could rake in money fixing it is pretty damn ignorant. As for everything else, read my post above. They have made hardware changes to the unshipped 360s, and the ones that break they instal a fix for TROD. So that right there, says that they are making hardware changes and they are acknowledging the problem. And trust me, I bash every console equally, I've gone through 1 360 as well. And I still haven't gotten reembersment money out of it. lol

I can't help but be amazed that some people see this as suitable. I don't care if they add a 3yr warranty...fact is, most owners are going to be hesitant and paranoid to play games on the 360 with worries of the ROD or some other problem. If I bought a 360, I want to play it carefree and whenever I choose...not having to wait weeks possibly months while it's in the repair shop. I just don't understand how they got it right with the X-box ( The damn thing is bullet proof ) but the 360 is a fragile piece of turd...guess that's what happens when you rush to be first in the Next gen market...

3 years, thats funny! Who wants to pay 400 for a console that lasts only 3 years? They're all gonna be broken in 5 years anyway. I'll buy one when I get lifetime warranty. Normally I would settle for 1 year but after all this crap any hardware that says Microsoft in it has to be guaranteed to last. I'll never trust them again.

Ha, what about if you bought the extended warranty from Microsoft? Many people have, I paid $50 for my extended warranty from Microsoft. A card comes with the Xbox 360 in the box with extended warranty information.
I bought a 2 year warranty as well from Customer Service and the way it sounds is it's voided and restarted with it's entirety after the 3 year warranty is up. That's how it was with the first Warranty update. In other words, we now have 5 years warranty, until they say Lifetime Warranty and then we're out 50 bones.

This is what I'm talking about, do you read what you type? You say they guarantee the 360 to last, yet they keep updating their warranty? Say what? Doesn't that contradict? I mean, if they were guaranteeing it to never fail, they'd need no warranty what so ever, like Sony and their PS3.
V_V Apparently you can't get past the MS bashing to understand why this is a good thing. 3 Years warranty is the majority of the 360's life span probably, if it does break, they cover everything not to mention they FIX the console. Not as in replace it, they fix your old console and replace the cooling system to make sure the TROD doesn't happen again. So, that should just be the end of it, the idea that if your 360 breaks it'll be completely fixed period. Yet you still continue to bash MS, there's no medium with you. If they don't fix it, you're pissed off, if they do fix it, you're pissed off because it shouldn't have been able to break in the first place. Get over it, everything can break.

Back to the point, despite them having minor problems, they're 32% failure rate back according to some unknown EB Games Manager. Because apparently we take everyone's word anymore. lol.

Honestly, I think extending it to 3 years solves nothing. Wow, I can send it in for free now? Bah, I shouldn't have to send it in for repairs in the first place.
Why should a gaming console break if I choose to play it for 8 hours or more a day consistently? I did so numerous times with my PS1 and Xenogears as well as my PS2 and Digaea. So why if I do the same with an XBox 360 it breaks? Sorry if i'm wrong with this assumption, but wasn't it meant to play Video Games?
Forget the stupid warranty extensions Microsoft and just fix the damn problem so I can buy an XBox already.

Hmm.. sounds like someone who realizes the 360 was a mistake and just has too much pride to say "Yeah.. they did F'up" Simple as that. You should work for MS in their "Lets spin this crap in our favor department" If my PS3 suffered problems, I'd be saying the same thing about it...alas, it hasn't, so, I won't. The same cannot be said about the 360.

You have a PS3?! NO FUCKIN WAY MAN!!!!
Seriously though, I've said they "F'ed up", in fact I said it in the very post you quoted. Rofl. Nice way to be blind there slick. :) And the difference is the PS3s that have broken, the owners are screwed because just like the PS2, they don't fix nor replace the PS3s. If your PS3 breaks due to overheating, which there's been cases though obviously not as many as the 360, you're on your own to buy another. 1% of their "5 Million Sold" is still 50,000 PS3's that have failed, yet you never hear about that. So at 50,000 consoles at 600 bucks per console $30,000,000 down the drain, but at least Sony gets 60 Mil for those consoles assuming they rebought a PS3. Probably because they don't offer a real warranty like MS does, but of course the failure rate is higher. *Shrugs* I guess that makes sense.

Actually the X-clamps are the problem, but the solution is just getting a better cooling system, which is being implanted in all the 360's being sent in. My guess is, like I said, they'll be putting them in the new 360s soon, probably when they start using the 65nm Proccessors in September.

I never expected a 3 year to be on the cards ever, so i had try preventative measures and replace cooling fans etc.
I think alot of people would have opened up their xbox 360 now invalidating the new warrentee so its kinda useless for old ones
So MS wont have to do much to help old xbox 360s just peace of mind for new ones i guess (ish)

If your in the UK it is 1 year (a nice little present from our government who signed up for every other european union regulation except that one)
No that incorrect we signed up for that european rule and implimented it in october 2005 just before the 5yr deadline.
Guys the red ring of light is not a fault it is a symptom of a fault. like when pc mainboad manufacturers encodea different series of beeps into their mainboards. just because you and your mate have the red ring does not mean you will have anywhere near the same problem. so the red ring of light is not a fault that microsoft can just fix because it means one or 2 of 1000 parts has failed. they are making newer revisions all the time. like previous manufacturers have done. this will be to cut manufacturing costs and to improve the durability of the machine.
please stop asking things like why dont they recall it ot wht dont they fix the issue. its not an issue to fix its just an indicator

people are amazing, they ***** because the console has faults and because there warranty has ran out so ms extend it and people still *****. "why not fix the problem", well they have fixed the problem now and added the extra needed heatsink which will start shipping with newer consoles very soon and this will add it to those that have issues. honestly what do you want them to do for you now? The warranty is far beyond the span of the launch consoles meaning its available to all and if you haven't voided your warranty by opening it up then they are going to fix your problem. ms acknowledged the problem when they extended the 90day to a year and now they are acknowledging it again by adding an extra 2 years.

Just rang their UK support line and the 1st Voice message you hear says they have increased cover for the RLOD error to 3 years, so confirms this is available for UK (Europe etc).
Not sure what I'll do with my opened 360 though - send it anyway?!? Hmmmm!

you can try that or you can do the xclamp replacement. its extremely easy when you get the correct parts and works perfectly.

My Wii broke and I have to say, so far the service from Nintendo is not good at all. It took me 3 days to contact them because the first day they were Closed, the 2nd day I kept getting "all serivce agents are busy, please call back later when call volumes may be lower" and finally I got to speak to someone on day 3.
I sent the item back to them per their instructions on the 22nd of June and they only got it on the 5th of July. Then I was told it was a 4-10 business day repair time and a 6-10 business day return shipping time to me once it was repaired. The guy wanted to charge me for shipping until I argued then he told me he was mistaken and I could send it and they would pay the shipping.
My console was about 30 days old, I hadn't played it for 10 days and then when I turned it on the graphics were messed up and I found out the graphics chip had overheated. Apparently if you don't play the Wii and leave it in standby you run the risk of the Wi-Fi chip overheating the graphics chip since the cooling fans don't work in Standby. The guy at Nintendo told me not to use standby or to play my Wii everyday, I was like WTF.
I have not had to return my Xbox360 for repair, but I do know it was hassle free for a couple of my friends and they had systems back in about 1 week, and got 1 month free live.
Apparently the graphics chip frying is common, he knew exactly what I was talking about at Nintendo and told me they have had several complaints with the same issue and gave me the above advice (no standby or play every day). Check out wikipedia for more info.
