View Full Version : Xbox 360 good enough to replace cable for some
The NYTimes has a feature article on how many gamers are turning to their Xbox 360 as a real source for media entertainment, and in some cases going as far as to replace cable such is the power of the Live Marketplace. The article sums up just how well the system is working for MS and the power of its power in the initiative.
He also finds the Microsoft points card (80 points equals one dollar) an annoying and slightly confusing system.
“It’s like at a carnival where you need two tickets to buy a drink and three tickets to buy a hot dog,” he said. “I’d rather know what I’m paying, and I’d like to see that transaction made in dollars rather than points.”
Xbox LIVE Marketplace, he added, “is not yet at a place where I think it’s made my life easier or more entertaining in my leisure time, but I’m excited for the potential. When it moves faster and the bandwidth is great, then I think it will be very cool.”

How is this possible? Wouldn't it render their TV's useless once the 360 burns out?
If I can't play a game for 6 hours straight without the need to worry these days, what makes them think I can use it watch movies for 6 hours a day?

I don't get it. What has the quality of the XBox 360 to do with replacing a cable?
If my XBox 360's cable carc'd it, I'd replace it without a thought.

That's the problem with Max Console always trying to reword articles on the front page and not just directly quoting and crediting their sources. Half the time you can't even understand what the hell Zeus is talking about.

FYI, the only media we have on marketplace in Canada is a few game trailers, 4 movie trailers that have been there for at least a year and no tv shows or anything. A few gametrailers from different websites and watever game trailers xbox offers. other than that, marketplace in Canada offers nothing. Not even movie related gamer pictures. So no replacement any time soon on this side of the border.

I just hate stupid posts/threads and if people actually believe that the 360 is a replacement for cable tv then they truely are losers.

As a guy from Canada said above for alot of people their is bugger all on offer in terms of video anyway, the UK marketplace is just like the Canadian one from what he said. Also it wont ever compete with cable, sky or your PC until it can STREAM video and not require a download thats the problem nothing is totally streamed it always needs some kind of a download and usually a pretty big one, yet on my pc I can watch as much stuff as their is on the net and only download if I choose to, their are plenty of streaming options, considering how big of a seller the core package is alot of people dont have a HD for the 360 anyway assuming everyone uses the HD is like assuming everyone has an HDTV, alot of people I know just have a memory card. The only thing that can compete with cable or stellite is your pc and the internet which if you have a HDTV and are tech savvy enough to want to watch something via a media other than your standard tv you probably have your pc connected to your tv anyway (I do) and its 99.9% all free and your pc is unlikely to die during viewing.

dedicated media center edition windows, with a 500GB hard drive, Basic cable service, and two theatrix cards = DVR via an expansion with Xbox/Xbo360. The 360 has the upper hand on this though, as the PC MCE remotes can be used in conjunction, and offers HD output, and upscaling of video sources.
Screw their damn marketplace crap.. I can deal with sub-par video with my setup.. Wish they would offer a service for ExpressVu guide and dongle via MCE.
