The parts are the exact same, but the WiiKey team claims that they can make their update refuse to update clones. They won't kill your clone, but they very well may go out of their way to identify it and refuse to update it. Until an update is released, no one can verify their claims.
The only functional difference so far is that you have to burn and run the WiiKey setup disc and save settings before a clone will read anything other than a GC disc (like the setup disc itself). It won't read original or backup Wii games until after you do that.
BOTH have a problem where they do not work with Gamecube games that use streaming audio even though it is listed as one of the chip's features. That means that the clones copied the WiiKey right down to the code on the chip even though there is plenty of open-source information for making their own.

Is the Wiikey compatible with all the Wii games so far?

Does this mean you have to run that disc everytime, or just once?
Thanks Elm

Depends on which clone you get
if you get the wiikit -- you have the added benefit of having a wire harness on the chip (i.e. 1/2 the solder points)
still waiting for that update to come out -- then we'll see if the clone works with it
my theory is that they are waiting for the gcos update before they release

Hi,
So is the "Wiikit" a clone also?
and what do you mean by 1/2 solder points ?

It's that the wiikit has a wire harness that plugs into the chip, therefore, you dont have to solder wires to the modchip and the dvd board, only the dvd board. Get it? That's 1/2 of the work that is already done for you. I have a wiikit, and it's run everything I've thrown at it so far.

according to divineo china...
wiikey = 0.004kg
clone = 0.002kg
wiikit = 0.003kg (including wire/harness)
why arent they the same? i thought they had the same parts. is it because wiikey has extra rubbish in the box?

it's not like you are gonna notice the differences in weights. if you'are cheap and unwilling to pay for a real wiikey then go buy the clone one. using product weights to decide the product to buy is just wrong!

Them gyros, in your wii remote... are also in the wii!
They detect if your disc is legal by the weight of it... original ones are lighter than copies.
So the chip needs to be a perfect weight for better compatibility. The clones are not so good hence the difference.
:p
Oh and I just lied :D
The weight is only there because its a part of the shopping cart scripts, usually they just use their own pricing rather than pricing according to weight. And I doubt they weighted the wiikey before the listed it in the product catalogue... so, guessed.
Close is the best to go for, 1:1 copy so all you have left is price.
