View Full Version : Rumor: MS mass deletes Xbox 360 crashing claims from Forza 2 forums
Internet reports suggest that MS ordered the deletion of over 900 replies by gamers who claimed that Forza 2 was crashing their Xbox 360 machines. Despite many making new threads expressing their anger at the move, many have simply started up a new thread on the matter. MS, you can run but you can't hide...
In what appears to be an effort to conceal the over 900 replies gamers provided on the official Forzamotorsport.net forums about Forza Motorsport 2 crashing on the Xbox 360, Microsoft has deleted the long thread, now stating that it’s “exclusive content for registered forum users” only. However, the thread was removed entirely, even to registered members.
This comes after the thread was revealed and reported on yesterday, gaining plenty of attention. In the thread, hundreds of gamers posted their stories on what happened to the 360 when playing Forza 2, and expressed frustration, anger, and disappointment.
Gamers on the forum are not going down quietly. In another thread entitled “Was the massive thread about xbox freezing deleted?,” one user writes, “omg? You see, they don't *** care about us. All they want is money. I demand an explanation! What a bunch of pricks. Screw this, i'm phoning MS.”

To me this is the sort of arrogant move that really makes me glad I don't actually buy 360 games to play on my 360 and have payed no money to microsoft except the 360 itself. Companies don't like bad press we all know, but to take the freedom of speech away when whats been discussed is not lies but actually peoples problems and worries is pathetic.
I bet they threatened some libel action and we all know the more money you have the less chance of losing.
Over 900 replies about a REAL problem plus other well documented issues and people STILL want to say it is "BS"... simply amazing.

I am not saying there is no problem at all, I've read through some of the posters and you can smell it; one was saying 4red lights came on - that's when video lead is not plugged in. Forums like these, anyone can post and without any proof, it is all gas.I don't like MS, Sony or Nintendo any more than you do, they are there to make money.

I too have never had a problem with Forza2. I only play for a couple of hours each time the console is on and not everyday... put it this way, i havent charged the battery pack of the controler in ummmm 7-10 days and it still doesnt need recharging yet, so that tells you how often i play.
As for any problems i have had with my 360, they have come from Need For Speed Carbon (which randomly crashes wherever it wants), and FEAR (which locks up the 360 pretty much all the time in the same place where the girl is chasing you down a corridor of fire), havent tried it for quite a while now as i have the PC version.
Just taking those couple of problems into account im pretty sure the 360 does break/brick for a lot of gamers, maybe more hardcore gamers than i am that play on the console a lot more than i do.
I also think those threads probably contain a lot of Sony Fanboys, jumping on the bandwaggon making it seem even worse (if it can get any worse)... Just as Sony threads contain a lot of 360 Fanboys rubbishing that console... Of course if 25% of 900 people were Sony boys thats still a hell of a lot of people with problems.

there probably was alot of anti M$ idiots in that thread, but its very unlikey that such a thread started out of thin air, there IS a problem and its very bad for MS to remove people's complaints, regardless of how big a problem it is.
It seems that every release that pushes the 360 does the exact same thing aswell, i recall the same thing with GoW, Dead (console) rising, GRAW2 and a few others, the future seems bleak if every game that actually uses the hardware results in a 900 post complaints thread. Fear teh GTA4 ;)

So because 900 isn't enough for MS, they simply delete them and brush them off as if it means nothing.
Once again MS is trying to deny they fucked up. Once again putting blame on the consumers.
There goes my holiday sale. **** them and I hope their console goes to ****.
They have billions of dollars... now maybe they can try fixing the **** they fucked up.
Now they wonder why in the last 7+ months they barely sold over 1 million consoles.

ahum, yeah sure.
there might be a small difference between dissing homebrew and major hardware problems, don't you think?
apart from that games are a matter of different tastes. for me nearly ANY game pwns halo 3. for me even contra on the nes pwns halo 3. but that's just me. for keeping it into the ms exclusive area "dead rising" pwns halo 3 in any way. but that's just my taste.

you are right. the sad thing is that as long as they get through with it they won't do anything. the wii runs in it's own league and the ps3 is no serious competitor at this moment. so unless the x360 sales have a serious break in, which i don't see happening in the near future, they will leave it like that, sayin "fook you, if you don't like it, don't buy it".

since day one I read about crashing xboxes ... holy hell
It has now reached a level, where its takes some serious activities against the way m$ handles the 360 customers.
I remember PS2 had similar problems with RSOD (red screen of death - laser problems) but those got solved after some time and was replaced by ony without a problem and without denying the problem.

Yes i do have a 360 (my second one #1 had 3rlod) and i'm more than happy with it (if this one dies after the warranty i'm gonna x-clamp mod it). I have a feeling after reading that there are 2500 being sent back a day in the UK that most of these were probably on their way out and Forza 2 was just the unfortunate game that was in that finished it off (Tony Hawks Project 8 did mine in and yes i have forza look at me sig) so 900 worldwide would kinda work out yes its crap but what are we really gonna do???

just partly true. if everyone that owns a 360 would have been in that forum and would have been complaining in it that would be true, but that forum just represents a low percentage of 360 owners.
question to everybody that fully modded their 360 with cooler and everything: did your overheating problems disappear after using a 3rd party cooler and/or 3rd party case?

I did spring update then booted Forza2 demo, it froze in the start menu. rebooted 360 and 3 red lights. My system was 6 months old. So i posted 3x on xbox.**** that it happened and they all got deleted. Then it took 30 days to get my 360 back.   and with the system they sent me i get clean disk and restart system about every 45min of play.

What people need to start doing is leave paper trails. If an xbox is broken send it back if it breaks again file BBB complaint. You get another one you file a complaint with your state's attorney general. Finally you file a complaint with the federal attorney general's office. This paves a way for a class action lawsuit. (filing a complaint is free and just wastes time but paves the way for lawsuit) They already have several BBB complaints. Sony has already lost a class action lawsuit in the beginning of ps2 life.

Kinda glad I don't have a 360. My friend has one and he will not even try this game because of the reported problems.
There has to be some problem because people don't fill a thread to 900 replies for the fun of it.
Just remember though out of those 900+ replies not EVERY one is an actual person having this problem. How many people post thinks like "HAHA .. Mine works fine" ?? How many people reply back to those HAHA people ??? ot every post is a unique person.
But I do hope MS figures out something soon for all you 360 owners. Kinda sucks really and I too would be upset about this.

Alright I know this is my first post, but I have been viewing these forum topics from the headline news for quite some time. Now I consider myself quite reasonable so just try to hear me out fully.
While I cannot deny that there is a strong chance that Forza 2 did cause someone's xbox 360 to overstress and die, I do not think that every post in there was real either. The console wars have gotten so ridiculous that I wouldn't disbelieve the idea of "M$" haters would jump on the bandwagon and put a few posts in their themselves, which I think iratasan was trying to say. What likely happened was the admins of those forums decided to send the information to microsoft, tell the people to post their problems on the xbox forums, and delete the topic. It was most likely just a piss poor executive decision, thinking that "well nothing forza 2 developers can do to fix their systems but otherwise try to patch the game and hope it helps people in the future" therefore just deleting the topic not realizing it would cause their own negative PR.
As for the xbox 360 heating issue. I know someone is going to scream "DENIAL DENIAL" at me, but let me just say. I know several friends who own an xbox 360 and I own one myself (almost approaching a year), and none of us have had a problem that I am aware of. One of my friends had one since launch and only replaced it recently because he got an elite. He put his 360 through so much I don't know how any system of any kind could have handled it. He did the 7 day survivor achievement for Dead Rising, and got bored in the middle so he paused the game and left it on for a day. Nothing happened. I, myself have play my xbox 360 for a few hours a day with no heating issues as of yet. To give you an idea how much I play, I am only 40 points away from getting to 10,000 gamerscore points, and I play lots of games that require many hours to get this. (I have 940 points in Test Drive Unlimited, and Ive put in at least 95 hours into that one game) I know a lot poor people are just not at fault, and they've came across bad luck. I'm sure that more systems in the beginning had more heating issues than the newer ones. Now don't flame me for this but, you know its almost hard for me in my position to not think that this is like some giant conspiracy to stop me from playing my 360. :p I think the internet has made the problem seem worse than it is? Didn't Sony use the same argument about the PS3 hype being shot down because of the internet? I believe the internet is a powerful tool of communication of information but a potentially manipulating one. Wasn't the failure rate of 360's 4%? Now remember they have sold TEN MILLION, so that means we should have 400,000 people complaining on the internet. Granted those figures can be off given that some people got 2 consoles or some people do not have the internet, but I doubt that there are more than 20,000 people complaining and screaming on the internet about their problem (which is less than the given percent) and I doubt that "evil Bill Gates" is sitting behind a desk looking on his computer and deleting those topics while laughing at us. Remember corporations (including sony, microsoft, and nintendo) aren't trying to have an evil plot to screw over their customers, they want a good product, so that they have good PR, and so that people buy more of their product so that they make profit.
Last, while I was considering of getting Forza 2, the possibility of it over-stressing my xbox 360 has frightened me a bit, and I am also thinking about getting Overlord anyway so I gotta watch my money. But I'm going to wait for the official word on this game before I do anything about it. Jeesh that was enough for me to type, I'm out for now.

I haven't charged my controller in more than a week and i play every day, mostly for 3-4 hours or even more.
The problems you described could just be a bad burn or a dirty/damaged disk if they are originals. Wouldn't know, u didn't specify. It could also be heat. I've had my 360 (2nd hand one) for over 2 months (have no idea how long the other guy had it for) and 0 problems. It only locked up once playing UNO and that was because i was downloading a bunch of sh1t and the connection dropped. I haven't played forza 2 though, just the demo for like 10 minutes.

Well I surely won't be buying a 360 anytime soon. I recently recommended one to a friend over PS3 because of the difference in price and the quantity of games available.
His 1st system had the ROD straight out of the box.
After exchanging it, his second system didn't even power up the ring. Not red, not green, nothing. Only the cooling fan could be heard when the system was turned on. You can bet he got an extended warranty after that.
If MS intends to expand, they better figure out a solution to these problems, and fast. Word of mouth goes a long way, especially when you hear the same things over and over.
The only thing that I can think of is that MS doesn't want to issue a massive recall of the majority of their systems. A lot of people may think it's easy to open up their system and fix what MS wasn't able to manufacture correctly. Let's not forget what the 360 is - a videogame console. These things are built for people's entertainment. Insinuating that these problems occur in 'highly technical' devices is a lame excuse. If I'm going to spend $400 on something, it better damn well work with no serious issues.

DENIAL! DENIAL!
:D
nah, just kiddin'.
you have put a lot of thought into this, but your point of view is just a bit too naive for my taste. let's face it, the hardware problems with the 360 is not something that some school kids spread around as a rumour to keep people from playin 360. it is a well known fact that there are a lot of cases of major defects, overheatings and a lot of disc scratching. it is also a fact that the ps3 has nearly no games at the moment and that it is unreasonable expensive. these are facts and nothing can change that at the moment.
you have to keep in mind that you are dealing with corporations here, not with individuals. if someone has broken your tv he might admit it and pay you for the damage. corporations don't do that. ms would have to reconcept the whole console and even worse, admit that they did something wrong. no corporation admits something like that until they get forced into it by a government institution. it is about preventing bad PR. as long as some magazins and websites write about things, microsoft can pretend that nothing is wrong. if a large percentage of customers write in the official forum that their console broke down that might do a large damage to their sales. as long as people buy the 360 they won't change a thing. corporations toss and turn and find even the smallest hole to wind through before admitting and/or changung anything.
apart from that a lot of people here wrote in this threat that they tried to get heard in other parts of the official forum and their posts were deleted as well. one guy wrote that his post was deleted 3 times in a row. do you still think this was by mistake?
flavor of the week: denial!

Almost all Sony products I've owned just died on me, especially the CD players back in the day, now I don't go swearing to Sony "YOU SCREWED ME OVER!!" and curse them down to the depths of you know where, but you just simply vote with your dollar. Where one fails you pick up with someone else. But do you honestly think that there are more than 400,000 people who have had this problem? (which is there expected rate of 4% correct?) I don't think I've known that many people. And also it is the people who have bad things happen to their products that they buy who speak the loudest on the internet about it (as they should) Very few people think "oh well my console is working great, let me go on the internet on 5 different sites and post about how well its doing." I'm only here because I read these news articles, read the people's responses to them, and only see insanely different extremes. On one side, you got the close minded Sony Fanboys who claim that everything is a giant "M$" conspiracy out to get your money and screw you over (as if no other company including Sony hasn't) while you have the other extreme of people who defend MS so much that they should down any possibility of having a problem and therefore keep the problem going by keeping it in denial. Both sides are guilty of their problems and why oh why must we go laugh immaturely at the other side going "HA your company sucks thats why I'm with _______" like children, it's ridiculous. Just go with whoever you like and care about the side that you are with instead of your competition. I swear I bet Sony fans have heard more about negative Microsoft news as much as Microsoft fans have heard about negative Sony news.
I still find it funny how Nintendo cleverly stayed away from all this competition and is ultimately the real winner in this "console war." :D Gotta give them credit where credit is due though, Not a single one of my nintendo products has ever, EVER given me a problem. (Didn't some climbers bring Nintendo Ds's up to Mt. Everst and all of them survived while their laptops broke? lol, or what about that gameboy that survived an artillery shell attack?)

good point, but that is exactly the problem. if my tft from acer dies after one week then i will buy a samsung next time, but there is no alternative to the 360 and ms know that. i bought my 360 for dead rising, lost planet, rumble roses xx (yeah i know, i know ;) ) and i will buy me a wii for boogie, fishing games, DDR hottest party, EA playground and so on. so i would not call the wii an alternative as it has completely different audience. i am lucky enough that i will get a ps3 for an incredible price, but from a regular customers view it ain't an alternative either. something with double the price is not an alternative. so, as long as the sales won't break in ms is not forced to do anything. they could even stop producing games if they wanted to.
another thing is that you wrote that your cd player from "back in the days" broke down recently. those peoples 360s are not from back in the days, they were purchased recently. turn this scenario around. if ANYTHING i bought for over 200 bucks would play a terror card like this on me then i would be p*ssed at the manufacturer, no matter which corporation that is.
yes, i believe that 400,000 had that problem. if a car model gets pulled back because of manufacturing mistakes the number usually is even higher, i can not see something out of the ordinary in that numbers.
read my old posts. sony wants your money, ms wants your money and they both don't give a flying crapper about customers, their families, their feelings or anything else.
well, nintendo is not part of the "console war". they don't need to. they have created something unique that everybody wants. they don't have to beat anything. they are in a higher league and there they don't have ANY competitor. if you don't have any competition you won't have any PR work to do to discredit your oponent. that counts for the regular consoles as for mobile gaming.

just partly true. if everyone that owns a 360 would have been in that forum and would have been complaining in it that would be true, but that forum just represents a low percentage of 360 owners.
question to everybody that fully modded their 360 with cooler and everything: did your overheating problems disappear after using a 3rd party cooler and/or 3rd party case?
no, i have a xcm cooler and my xbox 360 died last week

funny thing about this is as soon as someone mentions ANY ms related problems some moron starts screaming "sony sony sony sony".
c'mon throw some apple fans and some nintendo fans and some linux fans in there and make yourself look like a complete idiot.
welcome to denial.
Where did i deny there was a problem. Instead of scanning what i said to quickly reply with a "you are an idiot" insult, try reading the whole thing.
Why i didnt throw in Wii fans is because that console is riding high on the crest of a wave with little doubt about its success. PS3 on the other hand... well i dont need to explain it, even to a 'moron' like you, do i?
The others you mentioned arent even applicable, for instance - Linux is an Operating System (you fool).
In fact i would go so far as to say 'You are the typical kind of Sony Fanboy im speaking about'.

I am not saying there is no problem at all, I've read through some of the posters and you can smell it; one was saying 4red lights came on - that's when video lead is not plugged in. Forums like these, anyone can post and without any proof, it is all gas.I don't like MS, Sony or Nintendo any more than you do, they are there to make money.
shock horror , make money why would a company try to do this ??

thanks for the info man.
damn, is there ANY way to ensure that my 360 doesn't die in the near future? did anybody try to put their 360 into a PC-case with better cooling?
so far i read about the 3 rings, the heat issues and the disc scratching. question to anybody with further technical knowledge of the 360s interior: are all those problems, apart from the disc scratching, heat related or do we have to expect other, maybe deeper conceptional mistakes in this console's layout?

Actually it broke literally 3 weeks after I got it. So I told them and they gave me a refirbished one (excuse my poor spelling) That one broke 5 weeks after I got it, then I got one more. So I went through 3 sony Cd Players. The Sony TV my family got broke after 2 months, and the Sony sound system I got broke as well but that was about a year. And my PSP broke as well, its weird its screen broke from the inside out. O_o I saw it crack while I was playing it, I have no possible explanation for that one. So no I never said it broke recently, I said cd players back in the days. And the TV was I think like 2 years ago so it wasn't exactly AGES ago. Hopefully (knock on wood) my Sony Camera will last its done well so far after a year. Anyway I dont say Sony is trying to screw me over but with my experience their stuff has broken on me and therefore I will do everything I can to avoid them and their products. Also let me say that their take down of Lik-Sang, and how Sony Online Entertainment continues to ruin what could have been great MMO games. (RIP SWG)
But back on topic, I'm sure some word about this will officially come out sometime relatively soon, it may not be what we want to hear but eventually I am sure they should say something, especially if people keep asking.

i hope you have more luck with your camera.
yeah, that lik sang thing really got me p*ssed too. bastards!
i am not sure if we can expect an official statement apart from "there is no problem" anytime soo. maybe a "silent upgrade" on the 360 to stop the new consoles from crashing down, but they won't ever say that there is or was something wrong with the original 360.

I agree with both Covert Knight and iratasan.
I can confess that I have many a Sony product mess up on me. A VCR, portable CD players, my first CD burner (which I sent back for repair and came back with the same problem), a receiver/amplifier, and a compact shelf system. So yes, Sony makes some very faulty devices, but to be perfectly honest, when they work they perform very well.
But getting back to this topic, iratasan is right. Sony makes many SKUs for many products (different models of similair products). So if I purchase a bad Sony CD player, I'm a bit more willing to accept that maybe that particular model was bad. But when my $400 cd burner failed and wasn't repaired properly, it left a sour taste in my mouth. I will NEVER purchase a CD/DVD burner from Sony again.
The problems with the 360 are different. There may be a 2 SKUs plus the new "Elite", but they all suffer from the same problems. As a consumer, you really don't have a choice when it comes to playing 360 exclusive titles. I have heard the saying "vote with your wallet" many times, and since I consider myself well informed on the topic, I will do just that. But the ill informed take a plunge without even knowing what they are getting into.
The other argument is that only those with faulty hardware post this stuff up. That's simply how we deal with these things. When we are upset at things such as this, we want the whole world to know. There may be a few lamers just adding fuel to the fire, but when I go to teamxbox's forums and read "I've had no problems with xxxx on my XBox" and their next post says "my XBox just died" - there's no denying that there are some very legit claims out there. And since I never read about PS3 or Wii hardware problems, it's safe to conclude that everybody must be happy with the performance of those systems. If not, we would be reading about it as well.

i am not sure about the 360 as i did not open the case so far, but i know that it would be possible to put an xbox 1 into a pc case. there is even a converter so i can use a regular PC power supply. anway putting it all together into a pc case would be some a lot of work, but with the right tools it would be possible. it would be a cool thing to have a "silent" xbox in a HTPC/desktop case. i always planned on doing that, but i just did not have the money or the time. i already got it figured out how to do it from scratch to the final result.
i guess this also would work for the 360, but i can't say that for sure until i have took a closer look at the inside.

totally agreed, many people had the same experiences with sony's cd and dvd writers that you had. they totally suck at that. the cd/dvd reading times are a horror. sony divides everything they do in different company divisions, nearly like completely different companys. so while one product category might be fine some other could totally suck even if it is the same company.
i totally agree to all the other statements as well. thank you for your interesting post and your solid points.
