Microsoft has kicked off a legal blitz aimed at fighting software pirates located in California and Florida who are deemed to be selling counterfeit software. The latest filings bring the total number of legal actions issued by Microsoft up to 125 during the past year. MS claims they are conducting these huge assaults on software pirates to protect honest resellers who are finding it difficult to compete against companies selling pirated software.

Mary Jo Schrade, senior attorney at Microsoft, said: "Whether customers buy a new computer or software from a large retail chain or an independent business in their neighbourhood, we want them to feel confident that they will have the security and support they need when using our product."

The actions follow the formation of a bipartisan group of Federal lawmakers to work against software piracy.

The Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus, formed in 2003, comprises 70 members who are particularly focused on the global reach of the problem.

"A large sector of the US economy is dedicated to the production and sale of copyrighted material, and this sector is at great risk due to the unauthorised reproduction and distribution of these materials around the world," said California Congressman Adam B. Schiff, a co-chairman of the caucus.

Good for MS, as long as they leave downloads alone. Anyone that tries to sell pirated software deserves to be punished to the full extent of the law.

in the case of the 360, piracy is justice. $400-$500 for a piece of **** that doesn't last longer than a year. They refuse to give a refund to people who can't be bothered with the hassle of having to send in a 360 every time it breaks down. knowing that piracy can hurt microsoft feels like justice because the little guys will never beat them in court. my modded 360 broke down this week so i say we are even.

I wish they would concentrate on the reliability of their hardware more.
