View Full Version : The Darkness gets changed up for Germany
In order to be released in Germany without fear of a criminal offence, the developers of The Darkness on the Xbox 360 have gone back to the drawing board to change a few elements of the game. The most major change is the the removal of Nazi symbolism as well as the removal of the four Darkling kill methods and the ripping out of the heart animation being relaced with sucking out souls via a green mist. It may be possible for German gamers to source the 'uncut' version from the rest of Europe but this in itself could carry a maximum jail sentence of three years.

This control and censorship of media and information reminds me of a certain group of people, but I can't quite remember...hmmmmmm...oh yea... THE NAZIS!!!!

it was the same with Call of Duty 2, they were not allowed to download the extra multi-player maps.
Funnily enough tho and TV programme from Germany about discs getting scratched showed the wee 12 year old at best playing COD2 and is mum thereafter complainting about the scratching issue. It was Kinda funny seeing how the game is banned for all the NAZI references.
Nobody really cares about these wars, generations have passed. Far enough Germany of today would like to forget about it but its the most common History lesson out.

Bulls***, you are allowed to buy an uncensored copy as long as you are over 18.

I can understand their position a little bit. Trying to outlaw all things Nazi was an obvious choice back when they were trying to stomp out the last few after the war ended. Nowadays, it seems to me like they do this in an attempt to act like it never happened. What is up?

Of course you can buy uncut games here in Germany ... but not uncut games with Nazi-symbols!! To import them ... to deal with them ... or just to have such a game is against the law.
Damn, I hate our politicians!!

OK, but that doesn't prevent me from importing games.

Didn't you guys learn that the holocaust never happened?
No really, this is annoying. Is Germany really trying to make everyone forget one of the worst things to happen in History?

They just want to protect us fellow german citizens! ;)
BTW ... CD-WOW ... I ordered Darkness there ... but it still was not dispatched. CD-WOW says: "to be released".
AFAIK is Darkness already available, only the german one is due mid of the month.
So is there a chance that CD-WOW sends german games to german customers? Or what could be the reason for this delay?

Thats not it, its just nazi symbolism is forbidden so neo-nazis can't go and march with swastika flags and shout nazi cheers. Fyi Germany has a law against holocaust denial if you worried about that.

The thing is, this game isn't glorifying nazi's... so I don't understand why it would be outlawed. Is it like this with movies also or something? Are germans not allowed to watch movies that have nazi symbolism, even if they are portrayed as evil? How can you learn about the holocaust unless you knew what a nazi symbol looked like?! That is like holocaust denial itself! Makes no sense...

In fact ... the strange thing is ... movies showing the cross are not banned from Germany!

nazi symbolism is only allowed in movies here in germany, because they count as "art", games not.

But as said, you are not going to jail if you own games with a swastika in it. If you have it at home and don't sell it or advertise it (lol) then it's ok. Yeah, but the censorship really annoyes me so that I have to import every second game I am interested in.

STFU about the Nazi **** pls - there are probably more Nazis in this c*nt of a country I live in called England than there are in Germany.
Oh yea, and how spastic (see other story - http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=18517) are the German censors (or whoever) that they think they can keep this or any other offending (to them anyway) game away from normal people ffs? I'm more offended by the likes of endless sh1te sequels like FFFF (Final Fantasy Fifty Five or whatever f*cking number sequel we're up to now) or yet more Pokemon cr@p games. I'd rather PokeMyEyesOut than Pokemon to be honest.

I´m german too and i must say ,what has happened is without a doubt terrible and we should not forget about our past .But People should also understand we are not responsilbe anymore for what happend , because we are a new gerneration , we are just responisble for not letin it happen anymore . By the way i dont think any country can point their fukin fingers on germany .Every county needs to sweep the floor infront of their on doors. As i remember right the biggest weapon of massdestruction has been used only by one country untill now , and excactly the same country use this weapons as a reason to invade other countrys nowadays .And what about sendig ships to africa to steal people just to let them work for nada as a slave .

no offense to Germany or whatever but has anyone else played the game? You go back into a mythical world war ONE setting. Sure you are still hypothetically killing mythical Germans but they arent nazis.
and not to be a ****, but even if they were Nazis it would be twice removed-- once because it all happens in an imaginary dreamworld of the darkness itself and twice becasue its a FREAKING GAME.

Is it a sarcasm? As I said holocaust denial is a crime in Germany and even tho its not being made public German government is paying reparations to Israel up to this day.

here in germany are nazi symbols only allowed in parodies, documentation and movies like Indiana Jones. In video games and comic books it is strictly not allowed.
it's not that the government denies the past, it has strictly laws about that. nazis and their symbols are forbidden (see above) so is denial of the holocaust. german government and the central council of jews (hope i translated "Zentralrat der Juden" right) are watching with eagle eyes that nazis have no chance here in germany again.
it's not forbidden to kill nazis in games, it's only about the symbol. yes, that's because games and comic books don't count as art in germany. sad, so these media have very low support here and it results in there are too few games and comic book creators in germany. Mostly comic books, animation and games count as children things.
as for violence, there is a big discussion about violence in video games. Movies like saw have no problem here but games always have.
but it's no problem to get uncensored games from austria. it's not forbidden to do so, if you are at least 18 years old. so the three years in jail-thing is totally wrong
