Advice on Modchips

I am looking to buy a Wii and a Modchip. Does the Wii need a specific firmware in order for the chip to operate correctly? What chip do you guys recommend? Taking functionality, ease of installation and support into consideration. Your input is appreciated. Should I just buy a Modded Wii for $450 USD or would that be insane? Thanks in advance!

that would be insane.

I would reccomend the WiiD because it is the easiest to install. All modchips on the market have the exact same functionality. THere is no specific firmware you need.
