Ds Flashing?

Whats ds flashing i have heard of it before and i am curious as to what it is?

basically it is installing a new firmware onto the DS to make it possible to run homebrew form a slot 2 device(The GBA slot). So for regular homebrew you need a slot one and slot two device and with a Flashed DS you only need a slot two device. But the thing is you still need a slot 1 device to flash it but you only need it once so it is advised to borrow it.

Can you change the light settings like the ds lite with this new firmware

Only if its a DS Lite, you can't force the DS Phat to change it's light setting because it only has 2, ON/OFF.
