Hey everyone,
picked up a wiikey and some equipment the other day, and have begin the task of install. Don't want to add a d-sub port to my case (untill i can get a replacement case i like) but i AM doing the D-sub connection method.
i wired my wiikey to a d-sub and created the dongle... (though want to attach an LED later).
Now have my Wii disassembled (and the fear has set in)
my question is... for a d-sub dongle... in the 'tail' method... what's the best wire to use? i was thinking of separating the insulated wires from an old IDE cable so they'd all be pre-stuck together nicely??? any thoughts on what's best for this, and what exit's work best (i'm thinking through a fan vent if i can make that fit???)
as it's all sitting here open, any input as quickly as possible would be appreciated :D
why do you want to put a dongle with this chip ?
do you want to flash it this way ?

The best wire to use is still the 30 AWG. You could feed it out through the fan vent, but if you did that, you'd still have to attach the other D-Sub connector to test the whole thing. What you'll wind up with then is a D-sub wired through the vent, that will make moving your wii into the replacement case a little difficult. What I would suggest is running the wires up through the gamecube controller spots and just setting the D-sub connector on top of your wii until the replacement comes.

hehe, just curious :)

Not trying to give you crap, just wondering how many would get the reference.

lol! twas funny.
don't actually have a replacement case ordered yet. Just think i might in the future
and i DO enjoy the idea of moving my Wii as i like to be able to bring it between my room and the downstairs room (where the big mofo tv is).
i want to do a d-sub method so that i can unhook the Wiikey when i feel like it, and/or easily try other chips like wiifree, or stuff in the future.
i'll have to go pick up some of the AWG30 wire. i won't have nearly enough :D
the GC port isn't a bad idea atall, i just figured that'll be slightly uglier, not that my setup will be pretty but i figured at least i could hide the dongle behind it...
ah well!!! i'll work something out, and pick up some AWG30
thanks guys :)

I used single core SCSI cable for my dongle. Its thinner and more solder friendly than crummy IDE cables. And I ran it behind and thru the heat sink then out the fan vent. I wanted a nice flat connected dongle instead of a bunch of 30 guage wires.

bite the bullet and get yourself some 30awg from radio shack. Having a nice thick roll of it is handy. It's all i have been using. plus you can fish it through almost anywhere on the case.
I went cheap myself, project box and I just chopped up a serial extension cable for my ports. I also added 1 little red led to let me know it's workin'.

I used 30awg wire that came with my triwing and routed it outside my case through the fan holes. I am a noob at hardware stuff but it worked so i am happy. Clone worked on first try. Doing a couple more installs later.

hey guys, thanks for all the replies!! the SCSI cable picture LOOKS really effin sweet.
but i ended up going with AWG30 my buddy was able to provide as the store that sold it was closed. didn't have any spare scsi's around either... spare sata/ide .. sata mighta worked. ANYWAY!!
i just used a ruler and measured around 10" for each of the 6 wires, and i'm glad i was somewhat liberal!! very little extra to spare as it turned out. it worked out ABOUT perfectly.. but i had intended/hoped for a little extra slack.
SO FAR the Wii works fine as normal...but my wiikey setup disk isn't loading, so i don't know if my wiikey works. I know Nintendo GC/Wii are notoriously picky about the burner/media though sooo i'll wait till i get my buddies copy of the setup disk before i become discouraged.
in the mean time i feel INCREDIBLY successful for simply not frying my Wii :D

The install looks real nice, but switching cases (as I thought the poster was suggesting) would cause the problem I had pointed out originally...
What you'll wind up with then is a D-sub wired through the vent, that will make moving your wii into the replacement case a little difficult.
This was the only reason I suggested running the wires out through the gamecube controller ports and just setting the d-sub on top until the replacement case arrives and you can mount the d-sub on the case properly.

hrmm re-soldered my wiikey to the d-sub cuz a couple points where a bit sloppy (but fine i think still) so cleaned up with desolder braid and redid it almost entirely. nice and clean now... redid the d-sub connections all tight.
still no luck booting the setup disk1.0 from wiikey.cn though :(
terribly irritating.
not sure what's wrong at this point.

if you can post pics of the install on the pad as well as the connector for troubleshoot. If its a clone its probably dead. Divineo will ship one out to you for free so just give them an email.

yeah, all i have is my phone for pictures at the moment but i'll try and get some decent shots if i can, hopefully they'll be good enough. unless i can get my camera back soon.
i didn't actually buy the chip from divineo, i bought it locally the lady at the place said they got them directly from modchip.cn sooooo hopefully it's good. (it predates the holograms though)

why why why why why why why why....
Why use Dsub? when Mini usb has enough conectors?
is smaller and more fit for the purpouse
havign something like that hanging out the back of my Wii is plain FUGLY
Anyway what i have at the moment is merely the PIC socket mounted on the rear of the case towards the top rear. so i simply whip it off hwen i need to plug it into a PIC socket on my self built programmer and im away. the whole mini usb thing is for a later project so i can do much like you have with Dsub but smaller
