My guess would be that there would be no way to execute the patch from a burned disk short of a modchip and writing custom code to execute the patch. Just my thoughts, but you may be onto something.

Wouldn't having one of the updates at least give us a little information?

If the updates are encrypted which they probably are then there's nothing to learn.
