View Full Version : 30 AWG Wire vs Serial/IDE Cable Wire...

What gauge is standard IDE/Serial cable wire? I want to do a serial port install and not use 30 Gauge AWG... I'm worried about the size of the wire vs the size of the solder points. Has anyone had experience with both? If so, is it much more difficult to use the serial cable type wire?
One final question, I'm going to add a second on/off switch on the cyclowiz for chip power (instead of using the reset switch hookup method). Does this switch need to be placed between the negative (ground) wire or the positive (power) wire?
I plan on getting a switch with a protective cover to avoid accidental flipping, but would it destroy anything if it was toggled during Wii operation or if the Wii has power?

Do not use ide, serial, or scsi cable. They are all 24awg or larger and are too big to use. You actually COULD use them from a technical standpoint, but I highly recommend not using it. Just buy some 30awg wire, it is the easiest by far and will give the best results. As far as adding another switch, you could just put it on the power line, just don't flip it while its running.

There isn't a single store within my area that has 30 gauge AWG wire. I've been all over the city. Nada.
Do you know why disrupting power to the chip with the Wii online would cause an issue? As far as I've heard, the mod chip is only active when the disk is inserted....
I want facts not speculation...

The Cyclo patches the drive. Once it's done it doesn't do anything, so flicking the switch while the Wii is on shouldn't be a problem.
Btw. I can understand your problem just to good. It's nearly impossible to find anything for soldering here. I always have to buy over the internet and even there big stores often don't carry the 30awg-wire, so yo have to buy them from stores that you wouldn't buy anything else from and pay schipping just for this wire. >.<

I shopped around at a couple of Radio Shacks before one of the sales people offered to check and see if it was available at another store. I paid for it there, they called the store that had it and told them to hold it for me and that it was already paid for. All I had to do from there was go and pick it up. Check with the sales person at your local Radio Shack and ask them to check at other stores for it. No doubt they ARE hard to find as there was only one store in my area that had any in stock, but chances are you'll be able to find something.

My one real reason for wanting to use serial cable wire is because it's already nice and neat and I can easily take it out the case, just above the USB port.. I did order a wiring kit with the cyclowiz so many it'll come with AWG 30 gauge wire... Until then however, I'm left practicing on this serial wire trying to get an idea of just how small these f'n solder points are...

Yeah but sadly in Germany there are no Radio Shacks and no other store-chain that is similar. You have to find a small store that carrys such things and that's nearly impossible.

Sorry, didn't realize where you were located. Below is a link to the item on their site, maybe you can order it through there. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062640&cp

Care to elaborate on what went wrong and what you have to do to fix it?

The problem I ran into with IDE cables is that they kept fraying at the ends as I was trying to solder them. I didn't fix it, I went out and got some kynar wire and everything went much better. That's the difference between single core (30 gauge kynar) and multi-core (IDE cables).

Thanks but that won't be necessary. There are online shops that carry them, like this one (http://www.modelleisenbahn-cms.de/assets/s2dmain.html?http://www.modelleisenbahn-cms.de/busch/elektroundelektronischeszubehoer/microkabel/index.html). The point was that I can't find somthing local so every time I have to pay shipping costs for a 1,40€ item.

I have mine installed with some IDE cabling and it works great. I just trimmed and tinned them and it works just fine.

Same here.
I have done about 10 chip installs with the wires from a flat IDE cable. They all went perfectly. And Acemilo, I don't know what IDE cables you are talking about, but the ones I have are really small.

another
i used the ide66/100/133 which are thinner than the 33
but i seperated them into seperate wires
make sure they're tinned and its fine

I purchased 100 feet of 30 AWG Kynar wire on eBay for cheap. I am still waiting for it to be delivered though.
