At launch date I went at opening hour so I obviously didn't get one and my reservation just arrived :D
So well I got most of the info to mod my GC and DS here so I thought I'd find what I need to mod my Wii too. But I can see there's tons of chips everywhere and no real comparison charts, etc.
Anyone can give me some advice? What's THE chip out there? Is it reliable? And most importantly, how do I backup my games? In the BIOS like on GC but wirelessly? USB?
For the GC I used ethernet downloading first and on my second chip I could rip by USB.
Thanks to anyone willing to help me :)

Asking for an advice on which chip to use isn't that smart here, it'll turn into a flame war. So you better do a search and make up your own mind.
Backups is only possible with certain LG DVD-ROM drives and an SD card trick.

I think IMHO one fo the cheapo pic chips will suffice like wiifree or yaosm on a 12f629. (5 wires to solder onto a £1 or $2 chip)
They offer nigh on the exact same features as the hex/bios has been updated recently again and again and as they stand now they are close to perfect
btw DS best solution would be a R4DS if you are ok without GBA support
backing up your Wii games is different to your GC Viper Extreme, the wii stuff I think is usually done either using a hacked LG dvd drive or via the wii itself onto SD cards - alas I don't bother myself so I am not the best person to ask but there are a number of tutorials on here about backing up via SD card slot by emukidid

Well all of the chips work the same way and have the features
Here are a couple of chips. The Wiikey, WiiKey clones, Cyclowiz, WiiD, WiiNja and the homemade ones. All these are upgradable via dvd. Here are the specs
Wiikey- most popular one, but has huge constomer service issues and fans have been wating for an update which has constantly been delayed. There is a slight chance that a new wii might not support the wiikey as there are reports of the pcb board not containing a wiikey only point.
Clones are really the same thing for a cheaper price. Not sure if they can be upgraded using wiikey firmware.
Cyclowiz good chip but takes some additional thigns such as an on/off switch that must be mounted to the wii somewhere for the update to work. There is a danger with these on/off swicthets and many people end up frying their cyclowiz. Also one of the cyclowiz only solder points is dangerously close to a fuse which people many a time have blown. Your cant play games till you fix the fuse. (potentially dangerous)
WiiD-easiest chip for noobs alltoghter because it uses less points than the other chips. All the chips listed above were made for direct solder of the chip to the board, but this one is made for direct solder to the board as well as wire connect to the board. Most people do wire connect because it is just way to damn dangerous to do the direct solder method. Response team is nice and actually send you emails with how to fix your problem.
Home made mods are cheapeast but for people who actually have access to the parts and materials. Some people by the wrong parts or screw things up and it actually costs them more to mod their wii. If you are a pro with buildign electrical things then do this method
Overall for the novice the one i reccomend for the novice is the WiiD

Thanks for the input guys. I forgot to mention something. I want to be able to play online when the time comes, so I need a undetectable chip, with a switch or not, the console can't know in any way it's there. Is the Wiid like that? I'm good at soldering so please suggest the best chip not taking into account the installation difficulty. As I can see on the board, most people have the Wiikey, is this the one to go with?
And backuping on a SD card sounds good to me.
