Let that be a lesson to not run different region games with updates without having updated to the most recent version already.

This just happened with me too, but with the "Mario Strikers Charged Football Pal Wii-Allstars" version on my NTSC-U Wii :
I did the update, and the game worked, and as soon as I rebooted my wii, the Wii Settings menu show a similar error than yours...
Hope there will be a fix soon, at least I still can play original & VC..

I think it's safe to say not to use any other region game to update your Wii.
It's easy enough to perform a system update from the Wii settings menu first.

Duros, I'm very new to the Wii (actually just had it a week). I got my system used with a mod chip already in it (not sure what mod chip). I wanted to make sure I understood the warning of this post.
Is it basically saying to avoid games from other regions (as in games that may have been downloaded that weren't necessarily for the U.S.)?
I guess I'm a little confused about (1) when to perform a Wii update, (2) whether it is necessary to do some sort of update if you just play games bought in the U.S. or rented from Blockbuster, and (3) whether the update you are refering to is different the the automatic system updates that I have seen started by the Wii itsefl.

Games like Super Paper Mario and Mario Strikers Charged did not give you an option as soon as you enter the Disc Channel.
Also, PAL region users have already been through this with SPM.

Same here....too much alcohol last night...:D
I also cann't acces the settings menu anymore.
Let's hope Nintendo brings out 2.3U real soon as a update on a next usa game release.
I guess if we then do a system update we can access the settings again? or we have a bricked wii then.:)
Still all games/backups are playable so I am not ordering a new system yet.
Let's wait for Mario Party 8 and Big Brain Academy coming in the next three weeks.
Perhaps they contain another usa update.

Am I the only person who always keeps my Wii at the most up-to-date version? I don't think this would ever happen to me unless it installed an updated beyond what the latest one available to me thru Wii System Update was....

Sorry, but what is "PAL" region users refering to.
And another dumb question - If I rent Super Paper Mario from Blockbuster and it updates my system, what are the potention negatives/problems with this happening? We I not be able to play previous backed up games?

NTSC and PAL are video modes. NTSC is used in North America in Japan. For the most part, the rest of the world uses PAL. When someone refers to a PAL region game, they are most often just describing a game from Europe.
For your other question, you'll be fine. Using any update from your own region won't do any harm to modded systems (atleast not yet).

Thanks for the reply. After posting and continuing my searches, I came across some posts explaining the different regions.
From what I'm gathering, when burning backup of games from an ISO that has been downloaded, the problems happen when you download the wrong region for your machine. Is that to simplistic of an explaination?
But if I actually have the original game disc in my hand from a local store it should always be NTSC (obviously) so any updates would only help my system, not hurt it (at least for now), correct?

Dont know what the problem would be if you are using wiikey... you may need to insert the setup disc for it and see if it has regionfree settings that need to be set up.
I know for a fact that if you are using wiifree, you need to put in the wiifree setup disc and change the settings to region free.

Just do a reburn on -R.
I burn everything on verbatim -R at 16 speed. no coasters yet.

So as long as you update to the latest USA Wii update before you ever put that Strikers PAL disc in your wii, you're fine?
Edit: The answer is Yes.
1) If you have an USA Wii, be sure to have version 2.2U. If you don't, get it. Then do another WiFi update check just for the hell of it. Make sure it says you have the latest version.
2) Put in Strikers. It will want to update anyway, let it.
3) Your wii will reboot, and you will still be able to get into your system settings, where your version will still say 2.2U.
4) Enjoy Strikers.

If you haven't updated to the latest firmware just update it first via intendo wfc (in options) before attempting to play an auto updating game that is outside of your region.

i have a wii modded with the wiikey. i know my system was up-to-date with 2.2u, as i checked a couple times. when i put in strikers, it tried to update, hung at the very end which forced me to restart the system. now when I insert any dvd-r discs (even games that had worked before), I get the "cannot read disc" error. original discs still work though. am i going to have to wait til a disc has a new update on it and hopefully upgrade from there or does anyone have any other suggestion
