I was recently having trouble making a backup of a Wii backup. I tried everything I could think of, including various image making programs (Nero, ImgBurn, Alcohol 120% & CloneCD) but non would work

So heres what you do to get a good burn everytime :)

This was all done with the following -

Nero 7 (fully updated),
Pioneer 112D (flashed to 112L with Buffalo 8.09 firmware),
PioData 8x DVD-R with Ritek G05 dye.

1) Open NERO Burning ROM,

2) Close the 'New Compilation' window and highlight 'Recorder' from the top left and select 'Copy Disc'.

3) Then in the various options in this new window select the following -

Read Speed: 4x,
Read Options: User Defined,
Reading with error correction (slow and safe),
Read retry count: 9
Ignore read errors,
Write speed 4x

4) Hit 'Copy' ;)

Your inserted Wii backup should now start to read to the temp image folder. Dont worry when it gets to 100% and hangs (usually for about 2 minutes) as this is normal. The disc will then be spat out (at about 10 mins 15 secs) and your blank can now be inserted. Now sit back and wait (for about 15 minutes)

Job done! :D

PS: remember that this problem can be avoided (most of the time) if you buy decent DVD-R media to start with, ie Verbatim, RiDisc etc

Wii disks can only be read by certain LG drives or those with modified firmware, that'd be the issue with the method you're trying. You can make backups using the wii itself to SD cards and then transfer the image to your PC. Have a search around the forums and you'll find all the tools you need.

so why cant i just use nero , and tell it to make an image of the disc in the drive (Wii Backup) and then burn that image? Your telling me that wont work well ?

Also my burner is the Pioneer 109.

I'm telling you it will not work at all, wii disks are not in the standard DVD format so most drives will not read them.

If it's already in DVD format then that would work, if it's an original then not.

ok, since you're confusing people. lol

If you have an original, you can only make a backup with an LG drive or the wiikey thing.

If you already have a backup, you can use nero fine.

Thats right, this guide was to help the few MaxConsoles members, like myself, that have been getting error messages when trying to do a 1 on 1 copy from an existing Wii backup disc.

I don't even bother with making an image & just burn on the fly

OK it might be slower burning if DVD Reader can't supply the writer as fast as from HD but most peeps find slightly slower burns are "usually" more stable than burning at much higher speeds
(I'd say usually coz no doubt peeps will say 4x didn't work but 6x or 8x were perfect - depends on your setup/media/software and your own wii too)
