Xbox co-creator Kevin Bachus has revealed that early in the days of the Xbox, Microsoft was giving serious thiought to launching a new Xbox console every two years. "...considering the amazing pace of technology advances, our very first thoughts on Xbox included the somewhat misguided notion that we might upgrade the system every TWO years," Bachus said.

exactly what i though when x360 came out. this way M$ can always stay top of their game.... also Sony can bring out their Playstation too. first two year Microsoft makes profits, next years Sony. get rid of fanboys console war. but then again i wouldn't buy it. this is why i moved away from PC gaming as it was getting very expensive upgrading this and that every 6 months

This only shows the creators behind the original XBOX simply didn't know the philosophy of a games console. People expect a console to be in the top league for at least five years, taking advantage of being a unique proprietary platform and code optimizations specific to that platform.
I speak for myself, if I wanted to spend more than USD$400 every two years I would have just gone along with a PC for gaming.. and would get a more flexible machine for less money.
Their minds were set to thinking consumers who purchase a console do it because they don't know how to tweak ultimate performance out of their PCs.. While in reality people do it because hardware lasts longer and gaming experience and performance are the same within the same platform, regardless of hardware revision or age.

Thats all good but the power of PCs is at all times high and consoles with 5 years cycle just can't keep up, 360 isn't even 2 years old and its already behind, ps3 never even had a chance to outshine PC games at least for a year. 400$ every 2-3years doesn't seem too much to me if you really want to play in the top league.

400$ every 2-3years doesn't seem too much to me if you really want to play in the top league. It does to me, when I know I could just spend that in a new graphics card every 2 years and have a more flexible (multipurpose) machine with cheaper games. CPU and Memory upgrades are expensive, but (I speak for myself) even when you have a console for games, you need to do them in your regular work computer.
When I referred to "top league" I meant having the best and latest games, not being the top player in the top league. For instance, original XBOX did an excellent job with SplinterCell: Chaos Theory in that department, although showing it's age it was able to keep up fairly well when compared to "Medium to Lower end" PCs [I myself hate this designations, prefer to hear just the specs and then do my judgment].
My conclusion is, to all that show sympathy for this way of thinking, don't waste your time with consoles and jump to PC performance tweaking and upgrades.

I would never even look at a console if every game I would like to play would be on PC, unfortunately I have a sympathy for many console-exclusive games.

a new system every 2 years could have mint anything from just adding a bigger hard drive to adding wifi and blue tooth. and im sure all games would have work and each system.

If they were still releasing games for the psx I would still be buying them. Even if it's 5 year cycles I would rather just quit gaming since real life won't allow me to keep up. I'm not so graphics crazy, nor do I care about specs that much that I would be willing to drop $300+ on a console every few years. $600 on a console for 7 - 10 years is fine, but 300$ then $300 in 5 years, then 300 again in another 5? nope not for me. I sincerely hope that not all companies follow suit on MS actual console life either; I mean the xbox was supported for under 5 years if I'm not mistaken. That to me is not acceptable.
