View Full Version : Drive goes crazy in stand by ?!

This has happened to me twice so far:

If I put the Wii in standby while no disc is inserted, after a little while (maybe 15 mins) the drive starts trying to read a disc! It continues to try and won't stop until I stick a disc in. Even if I unplug the power and plug back in once I turn it on it starts again.

Once I put a disc in it stops and everythings ok but it seems that I must either always leave a disc in (in which case standby works normally) or disable standby altogether.

BTW I am using Wiikey with 1.2 config and I have a D2B if that means anything to anyone...

So if you have a disc in or disable standby all is fine?

Well yeah but those are obviously last case solutions. What could cause this?

Maybe a bit of solder bridged a connection on the drive? I couldn't think of what would make your wii want to access a disk in standby other than something like that.

What chip is installed? That could be a big factor as well.

Maybe there is dust on the sensor that detects when you insert a DVD. Try a vacum cleaner. :D

Or maybe a clone chip malfunction? Bad firmware flash?

Well I bought it from www.modchipcentral.com which is listed as an official reseller on Wiikey's site.

Perhaps it was a solder problem but everything else works fine and its weird that this only does it in standby, when no disc is inserted, and only after its been sitting in standby for a while.

Before I modded my Wii I also had a very strange experience.
I get up early every morning, and one morning the Wii was making alot of sound (kind of a windy sound).

I get closer and hear it is the disc spinning wildly in de drive while the Wii is standby (orange light). I ejected the disc and it was gone, never had it again since.
Also a friend of mine and me experienced a crash while loading (switching channels). The wii tries to load but just hangs on a black screen. Power off and on fixes it.

Well my backups stopped working altogether. I fixed up the solder points and now they work again. We'll see if this also fixes the other problem.

It sounds like stephanic had the opposite problem.. hope you managed to eliminate the problems like he did.

in my recent tradegy turned good I found wierd things with the drive. I was basically toying with the connections while it was off, but plugged in (Red light), but it seemed whenever I jumped a connection, it would turn the Wii on which I thought was odd. makes me wonder if you get a stip in a wire or a bad connection that could cause the drive to boot up.. just a thought tho

Thats interesting indeed. Anyway as I said, I resoldered some points and got it all working again so it boots everything. Now I've I tested it on standby and sure enough about 30 mins or so later it starts trying to read the a disc (while there is no disc inserted). I stick a disc in and the light goes green and it starts booting the wii normally.

I think I am just going to disable standby. The only real benefit is the flashing thing when you receive a message right?

not being funny, but why not just leave a disc in?! Where's the harm?!

That may be another solution but the last time it happened it was one of my friends who left it in standby after having taken out the disc. Safest is to disable standby. No reason for it anyway.
