Miami attorney,anti-game activist and everyone's favourite bloke, Jack Thompson has taken issue with Microsoft's Halo 3 game, currently going through its multiplayer beta on Xbox Live. Mr Thompson has apparently issued the following <a href="http://www.gamealmighty.com/story-individual/story/Jack_Thompson_Lays_His_Legal_Sites_on_Halo_3/" target="_blank">letter</a> to Bill Gates lamenting the ratings system and how Halo should by no means, sold to anyone under 17. Whadya think, is it legit?

well, one kid killed a lot of persons, nobody haves proof that it was because he played a shooting game, and he though he was living on the game and went and killed them, because for me thats just bullsh!t,
i feel sorry for them too, but linking those killed to a game is just something this moron can say, and as far as i know the killings could had been stoped well before they increased to a masacre. it wasnt a 1 minute rampage of killings

That's what I'm thinking. All Halo's are rated Mature. Why would 3 be any different. Thomson knows it's gonna be rated M he just found another way to wedge into the media and make a splash.

In his letter - he refers to previous halo games helping to train the DC sniper:

But where are we going to draw the line with these common recreational activities which are becoming the illicit point to blame in corresponding gun crimes. The underlying argument we are facing is the difference between regular normal gamers and dangerous people who take violence in games to the next level in their minds. The problem is not going to simply be solved by re-innovating the game ratings system.

Back to drawing the line on these games which apparently 'train' people to commiting crimes - if Mr. Thompson is going on the path of blaming games such as HALO - where might he stop? what about shooting games at the fun fair? and laser quest? is he moving towards a society which is being victimised by a section of people who take recreational games and use them to 'train' themselves to do bad. Is this not the same as reading a book on criminology? There are books which discuss criminal activities that might be seen to influence people in commiting crimes.

I just hope Jack learns their are different more efferective routes to tackle these problems in society rather than just sueing companies to gain publicity. Personally, I don't know the perfect solution to cleansing peoples minds away from criminal thoughts - there may not even be one, but I know that this is not the most efficient way to go about acheiving a safer world to live in.


Hope my thoughts didnt stray too far away from the subject but I do feel provoked when someone tries to connect a somewhat safe and fun activity such as gaming - with people who commit atrocious crimes.

Honestly, using Halo to learn how to be a sniper. How that wasn't thrown out of court immediately is amazing. Any idiot can point a rifle at someone and pull a trigger, you don't need "training" to do that, and in order to be a _good_ shot, you're going to need real-world training, not some game where the main character can do a standing 5-meter jump.
