View Full Version : Wii Laser Adjustments for DRE's?

Here is the scenario - Lite-On LH-20A1H drive, with the newest firmware... Verbatim 16x DVD-R retail cakebox media. More than half of my games worked when burned at 8x, some had DRE's. Re-burning at 2x fixed most of them, but some STILL get DRE's. Cheaper media fails to even attempt to load, so I assume I may have a very weak laser setting from the factory. Has anyone successfully adjusted the laser on the Wii drive?

trust me its really not needed, go buy a decent burner. i got a pioneer and all games work fine without errors, even at 16x.

What really defines a decent burner? It's one of the newest, fastest burners on the market! I was really thinking about picking up a Pioneer at work the other day, they are the cheapest drive we carry but a lot of people use them for game backups with great success.
But really, if you think about it... the laser settings with the GameCube from the factory varied greatly and so did its compatability with backups... It's only natural that some Wii's could be set on the low side. It's just a thought... especially considering people are getting a lot of different results with A LOT of different media/burners.

So, I am guessing no one else has had these particular issues? I COULD sell this drive on ebay and get a Pioneer from work... I just bought this drive, so I'd hate to just lose out.

Tweaking the laser on the Wii is not nessasary. Recommend getting a new burner. I use a Memorex drive and have no problems with Wii and GC games.

sounds like your in the buisiness, so why not get a mate to do a backup on his drive / system, then try that.
In all honesty , with the wiis that i do etc etc, every now and then i get the odd "this wii you did , doesnt work , all my games wont boot , dont tell me its a media issue as ive been selling squillions of games / dvds / cds etc etc for years and my setup it the best" and i always reply with this.
Use decent media, people always assume verbs are the best , but ive seen a lot of people have problems with verbs etc etc, decent media doesnt alway mean the most expensive, get a few ritek GO5`s .
Use a decent burner, Pioneer 111d / 112 are tried and tested good burners for this stuff and at £20 or less in the UK are a bargain.
Make sure your PC isnt doing anything else whilst burning the game, have loads of progs running can affect your burn, its a fact.
write em at a slowish speed (4x is ideal)
and i always get a mail saying theyve sorted it, bad media / writer etc etc.
inconsistent boots can be a solder problem also, so make sure your install is good, it can also be caused by interference from a bad install (crossed VCC/GND and data lines) , but is quite rare.
seriously though ive never had to tweak a wii laser yet, i know GC needed it , i wrote a good tutorial on it which still surfaces today ;)
hope this helps.

I chose this burner due to its high remarks, its defintely a decent burner by any standard... we carry the Pioneer 112 at work, it costs me around $44 (5% above average cost)to get it. Surely I can get it cheaper online, but I may get it just to test it and if it works I'll keep it, if it doesn't... back to the store it goes :P
As far as media goes, I might have a go at Taiyo Yuden. The Verbatims still cost me around 36 cents/disc + tax. You can surely get Taiyo's cheaper, I'll just split them with a buddy of mine. I still have an unopened spool of Verbatims I can return too, so no loss there.
Booting is 100% every time, I've only experienced a no-boot scenario once, and that was Bust-a-Move BASH... and I didn't rip it myself. I just get DRE's in some games, Prince of Persia @ 8x gave me a DRE, so I reburned @ 2x and it worked perfect. Same with Rampage Total Destruction and Fishing Master (import). They both worked @ 2x. I decided to start burning @ 2x after that, and I got 2 discs that aren't working at 2x. One skips at part of the intro, the other DRE's during gameplay. I dropped something heavy by mistake during the burn on one of them, so that could explain the skipping one... but the other one, I might just reburn @ 4x and call it a day...
I was looking to make it a little more foolproof :)
