Just got my wii this morning at 8am from Target. As soon as I got back, I installed wiikey. Tried it out, and it only partially works. I put in a backup of RedSteel and it reads and the game opening begins, but when I press A to begin I get a message "unable to read disc please consult manual". I tried to do the wiikey update as well. It reads that there is a GC game, but once it starts to load it automatically resets itself! Could this be a new security? Any help is appreciated. Also, the media I used was Memorex DVD-R at 2x and then Verbatim (did nothing).

could be media...

i once had a problem with my Wii reseting with an old version of Wiifree. When I tried some GC homebrew, it would reset the first time i started it, but after the Wii restarted I could select it and it would start working.

The "unable to read disc" message is a clear case of bad burn/media.

The "unable to read disc" message is a clear case of bad burn/media.

Seconded...I'd always get this message on imation DVD+R's, but since switching to TDK and Fujifilm DVD-R's, I get pretty perfect backups.

Try burning at higher speeds also. Burning that slowly on new media can cause problems too.

There is no new security from nintendo, you are just using bad media or not burning properly as previously stated.

oh if you bought it from Eurasia its 100% the real deal, that where i bought mine.

Try burning on 1st class media at 2x. That seemed to fix things for me.
People will tell you to burn faster, because new media, new burners do a better job. In my experiance i have yet to see that and i've been burning for a long time.

So i say try a burn slow, 2x on 1st class media. If that doesn't fix the problem then try diff 1st class media.

how does it still work? the wiikey is one of, if not the only mod chips to use pad 3 which has been moved/disabled from newer boards. i know you can solder directly to the leg of the IC to get it to work, but i doubt the OP did that. i think most assumed it wasn't in the states yet. i know other chips dont have this problem, but since the wiikey uses 6 points instead of 5 for the others, they will not work in quicksolder installs.

OP, did you use a wired install, or a quicksolder install? the quicksolder method should not have even fit correctly on the new boards, but the solder pad still exists, just above pin 4 instead of beside it (even though it doesn't work). so if you used wires, maybe you just didn't notice the subtle change.

also what are the first characters of your serial #? i want to see if mine is in the same run.

My wiikey was from Eurasia as well. They do not sell clones.
It helped me to change the drivespeed to 3x. Otherwise i couldn't play Wii backups.

just try to reburn it, make sure theres no hairs or scratches and you should be fine
i burn mine at 8x, so speed shouldn't be an issue

Yep.. i agree re-burn.. it took me a few coasters to figure out which speed worked best for the media i had.. don't be afraid to try different speeds to find which one works well for you

I used verbatim at 8x for my first burn. And it didnt work. Set it to 4x and works like a charm. And whats even more weird is that just for a test I tried 16x and they work....so it is very weird. Ritek at 8x work like a dream for me aswell.

I have been really busy with finals and had a huge project, I'm running on like 5 hrs of sleep in the past 2 days. Anyways, I'm gonna try reburning with different media and at different speeds, maybe I'll try +R as well. I soldered the wiikey with the wires method, I took my time and did a thorough job and inspection. The placement of the solder points is the same, its only the Japanese models that are changing the points.
