So , im planing on ordering a chip tomorrow, my budget is 45 dollars(not that I want to spend it all if I dont need too). Ive looked at Cyclowiz, Wiikey , Wiikey clone and Wiinja, ive noticed that they all look pretty well the same but cyclowiz seems like it has best support...but im not sure. Anyone wanna point me in the right direction?

depends on what you want to trade off
1. Cyclowiz
Updates and plays MOST gamecube games, and all Wii Games for the time being. Better support. HIGH PRICE
2. WiiKey
Updates close to never. Empty promises. Has problems playing a good chunk of gamecube titles - needs an update that has been delayed for over 2 months. Easier than CYCLOWIZ to install. HIGH PRICE
3. WiiKey Clone
If you are interested in just playing WII backups and some gamecube games, you can save yourself $30 and buy one of these for a fraction of the cost. Theres no telling if an UPDATE would work on this. Essentially Option 2 & 3 are the same features with the exception that the clone costs $32 LESS. LOW PRICE.
4. WiiJa Deluxe
Plays homebrew fine, and universally plays all gamecube games and wii games for the time being. I regret not buying this one. Tradeoff is paying the same for options 1 2 and 4. Good support. HIGH PRICE

Hmm, thanks for the help, I may go clone...but im also very woried about soldering. I have a friend at school who like mods alot but im not sure if he could do it, probably though. I know he mods stuff, so he can probably install it for free...its not very difficult is it?

I'm in the spot I was going for the wild any idea if this is a good shoot because I know that this is the only chip that you can disable.

build one for yourself. wiifree,
+1
WiiFree rocks, quick wire install of a stable build or external socket and update as often as you want.
And the cheapest by FAR! Damn near free if you have a programmer. :D

If you have a pic programmer or know someone who does, Wiifree is the way to go right now. If you are buying a commerical chip I would wait to see what develops with the Wiikey update that is "coming soon" according to their site.

Hmm im in exactly the same boat
and have been leaning towards Wiikey... but after reading about some of there support issues and not fixing an audio bug i think ill give that and the clone a miss....
i hear a lot of mixed reports of the Cyclowiz mostly not great reviews
I think im gonna try and get a WIInja as this was the Chip I had settled on first.
As for the WiiFree isnt there a bit mroe to it than it jsut being free.as forgive me if im wrong but I have yet to find a decent TUT on how to construct a wiifree and also then how to program it. Of course as im in the right industry I do have Qualified electrical assemblers to hand :) but either way I studied that kind of stuff at college so i should be able to handle it myself. but like i said this is all beside the point as Ive yet to find out how to make a WiiFree

wiinja v2 is available very cheaply as the hex is freely available you could program your own, also wiinja deluxe chips are also out there very cheaply as a few people have the hex for that.
I personaly would go the homebrew route and use wiifree or the wiinjav2 hex, i use these and they perform brilliantly, at the moment better then the over rated wiikey. Its also pretty much a matter of time the wiinja dlx code is available to all, so when it does you could prog one of those and swap it for whatever chip you fitted now.

thanks for that addition 909 i didnt know that before but its nice ot know now
I take it ill need a programmer to program it with new hex?

yeah u need a programmer to reprogram them, however the wiinja dlx comes on a different pic chip to the wiifree and wiinjav2 so u would need to buy another pic (less than a few quid), with the dlx, once its installed you could update it when/if an official update comes along. to be honest there isnt much point at the mo since the wiinja v2 and dlx work flawlessly already.

At this time I would really consider a cyclowiz...so far they are the only ones who have showed their chip can be updated via DVD

With a PIC programmer (can be built with cheap components) and a 12F629 chip you can choose between Wiinja V2 (leaked version), WiiFree, yaosm and OpenWii.
Chips you can get for free by requesting free samples from sample.microchip.com but they don't cost much if you buy them either.
However if you go for a 12F683 chip then you will only be able to run WiiFree or yaosm but if the Wiinja deluxe code ever leaks it uses a 12F683 asfaik. The 12F683 offers twice the storage compared to the 12F629.
I personally would go for a 12F683 and run yaosm on it but I'm biased as I wrote yaosm to fit my own needs. ;)
In case you choose to try yaosm then I really recommend setting the default speed to slow and the alternate to high. That way you will have a nice and silent Wii but the possibility to turn on full Wii speed (noisy) when you need it. This a feature that I so far haven't seen on any other chip.

Thanks bell
my old Electronics archived knowledge is eeking out of me right now....
I never have to think about circuit diagrams anymore. i got lazy when we got employed a specialist now i just chuck mini projects at him.

hey you could try the wiid. It has wonderful support. It is as easy as balls to install (way way way easer than cyclowiz and wiikey. You have less chance of screwing things up as people many a time have done)
There is loads of support. EVery single game works and diffrent region games run bueatifly.
Also with the cyclowiz it is dangerous because you need a switch to update and many people have destroyed their wii and or cyclowiz doing the update. Also the switch solder pad is dangerolsy close to a fuse that is pretty damn easy to blow.
With wiikey too many chances to screw up.

Indeed Krusty
This is why i have settled on the Wiinja V2 for now..
I may install it in a socket rather than straight of the chip legs though
so if i Go down the PIC programmmer router like Bell is sugesting
then I have the option of.. not only fw upgrading it but HW upgrading it.

I had a thread not long ago about which mod to get, i went with the Wiinja D as i liked the support etc, i'm getting the mod done by someone else as i can't solder to save myself and i'm not testing said skills on my wii. i got a guy called WillieWonka over at the cheapmod forums he's doing it for £55 thats the chip, install and del back, not too bad i think. i'm in the UK by the way.

too hard to screw up? maybe for a retard that cant solder to save his life. its so easy to install you could teach a monkey to do it.
