I can't seem to find a clear answer to this. If I have a chipped Japanese Wii would I be able to access the US store and purchase games? There are quite a few games I would like to purchase and download but I am afraid of either being locked out because of the chip or locked out because its a Japanese Wii.
I will be using the Wii outside of the US, so that may also be a problem if they check the IP. Has anybody successfully accessed the US store from outside the US with a non-US Wii?

The modchip modifies the DVD drive, not the BIOS, firmware, software or other functionality of the Wii.

I understand, thank you. However this leads me to my other concern - can a Japanese Wii outside of the US access the US Wii Store to purchase and download games?

I think the Wii will just connect to the Japanese store as determined by the firmware.
Do you have the Japanese Wii now, what stores can you access (Japan one only I assume, regardless of where in the world the Wii actually is)? It will be the same if it's modded or not.

all you have to do is go into your wii settings and change your wii to a us wii (click on US for where you live) and you should be able to get US virtual console games

I plan on purchasing a Wii very soon. I am living in Beijing right now and Japanese Wii's are available everywhere, but US ones are hard to come by. If I need to get a US one I will have to have someone send one to me or wait a long time and get one myself for. I will probably purchase it next Monday or Tuesday, so I want to make sure I am not buying something that will limit my use.
Can I assume the Japanese Wii has an English menu option?
Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

Can I assume the Japanese Wii has an English menu option?
いいえ (No). Learn Japanese if you want to use a Japanese Wii. There is no multi-language setting.

Well, I got my Wiikey'ed Wii and things seem to be fine. The first Wii game I burned worked fine and got some NGC games which also work perectly. I haven't set up my wireless router yet, so I haven't try accessing the Wii store. However, in the Japanese Wii you can't change the language or the location as you can in the American version. The option is just not in the menus.
If I can't access the US Wii store I will be a little annoyed, but I guess I will just have to deal with it. I just up maybe in the future there is a way to change the firmware to US firmare (is it writeable or ROM anyway?). It would also be nice to have English menus, but I can get buy using the English manual downloaded from the net.
[EDIT] One question I shouldn't ask...
Thanks again for answering all these questions.

You cannot buy vc games from other regions. You also cannot update with firmware from other regions or you will brick your wii.
