after installing a wiikey chip, my wii was just giving the "error reading disc" message with both backups and originals. After removing the chip, the wii could read originals again.

Any ideas what could cause this? The install was perfect, with none of the common problems that i've read about.

This happened to me once, turned out the ribbon cable wasn't in all the way. Maybe you should have checked that before removing the chip.

update:

Re installed wiikey, wiisports worked. put backup in drive: nothing. put original back in drive again nothing. now nothing works again.

I'm almost certain it's not a clone. It looks identical to pictures of genuine chips.

There were no obvious visible problems with rhe install. (it looked perfect, clever comments don't help).

Checked all cables were firmly seated.

tried re-setting, and turning on and off. left it off overnight and tried again this morning, but with no joy.

If there is no solution, then what is the best course of action? New chip?

Cheers :(

1. Did you put the battery in when u try?
2. Did you check all sold point is not connect to others?

Battery isn't necessary, my wiikey worked perfect when I booted my still completely opened up wii without battery.

The solder points is indeed the best thing to check. Same with the advice from AceMilo to check if your drive is connected correctly.

My first install I had the same thing, but it was that there was a bridge on my wiikey where the four solder point are together. I nicked it off with a knife and no more problems.

before I fixed it, it ran originals fine, but no backups.

I hope this helps.

yep, my first wiikey installed by wire didnt read backups. had to check over my connections again and it seems like one of the wires gotten loose when i was putting the wii back together. so i just soldered the chip directly to the board just using a small amount of solder for the connection. works great ever since.

Are you sure you are connecting to the correct points? This question applies only to backups workings as originals are not affected with mod installations

hi again folks.

Thanks for the suggestions on how to get my chip working, but still no success.

I now think that i may have a faulty chip. I have contacted the seller of my chip (bought on ebay), who has said that to make the chip work, that I need to boot the 1.1 "update" disc. Is this right, I was under the impression that the chip would work out of the box, so to speak? I have actually tried booting the 1.2 update disc, which as with all other discs, it will not boot with the chip installed.

I have once again unistalled the chip, as I would quite like to be able to play on it while all this is being sorted out. So I would like to know before i go through the assle of installing it again if there is any likelihood the 1.1 setup disc will make a difference when I can't even boot originals. Or should i demand a replacement chip from the seller.

cheers again.

stephen

Ive fitted a few wiikeys and i ran the 1.1 disk and everything worked fine but i doubt this is your problem since the 1.2 doesnt boot either. It wouldnt hurt to try the 1.1 disk again tho just to make sure.

It does sound like a faulty chip to me.

i am having the same problems as you. I have heard that by booting the installation disk and setting the drive speed to 3 it will work. I have not tried it myself though.

I installed my first clone the other day and nothing seemed to work until i put the 1.2 set up disc in and set the region bit on and changed the drive speed to 3X now it all works 100%

This may be correct. I installed a couple WiiKey clones in friend's systems last night. During the first install, I was sure everything was connected properly, but couldn't play originals or backups. Thought "maybe something's messed up, this is supposed to work out of the box". I figured, what the hell, I try the setup disk. To my surprise, I popped it in and it was recognized as a gamecube disk. Ran the setup utility and changed the drive speed to 3. Popped a Wii backup game in and everything started up beautifully. Installed a clone in the other Wii, ran the setup and everything went through perfect. Try the setup disk and see if that fixes the problem, it did for me.

Granted, the one I installed was clone. But I had simialar issues. After installing, I couldn't get it to read any discs. Originals or backups. Then I found that only using DVD+RW discs worked burning in either Nero, Clonecd, or Imgburn. And they worked 100% everytime. So if your 100% positive you got the solder/install right. Try using a DVD+RW disc and see if you have any luck.

In my original thread (http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=60921) about this I thought I was using -RW, but I was actually using +RW.
