I've been haveing random problems with my backups and am trying to figure out if it's a dre problem or something messed up with my GC.

I'll use re4 disk 1 as an example. I've burned it at 2X with my lg-4163b to a riteck g04 disc and it does pass the qoob's disk check, I've also tweaked my laser to 215 ohms and am using a qoob pro with bios v1.2

What happens is when it's loading a new level or a movie the laser starts to make a loud clicking sound. It starts to slam to the edge of the disc and then back to the center and doesn't stop doing this unless I reboot the gc. This makes the gc freeze with a black screen but I have never gotten a dre error message. It's aslo completely random, once I reboot I go to the same spot and it loads fine. Sometimes it will happen 3 or 4 times in a hour other times I can play for 6 hours strate with no problems.

It's really starting to irritate me and I'm trying to figure out if it's a disc, burner, or gc problem. Here's a scan of the disk with DVD-Info pro http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y134/ewb78tollery/re41g04.jpg
Thanks for any replies.

Try burning the disc at a faster speed (ie 4x or 8x, if it permits) and see if you get that clicking sound. Also, try different branded media at different speeds (2x, 4x, 8x) and see what happens.

I used to have that clicking sound then I switched media and it doesn't click as much anymore. It might click once in a while.

You know what, I used to get the same problem on my cube, but it was with the original RE4 disc 1, not a burn. My cube would randomly click when it goes to load a new scene/movie, but it would ever only click once, then it would be fine. Not over and over like you're experiencing. I also had it happen occasionally with Metroid Prime 2.

Since modding my cube and lowering the laser resistance to 200 ohms (originally 477) I haven't really noticed this problem anymore.

Try tweaking your laser a little lower, say 180-200. If it still does it, maybe a new laser is in order.

the qoob doesn't behave the same way as the viper when it comes to handling DRE's (infact, i think what the qoob does is bad imho)..

basically, i have a few cubes with various setups (viper/ar/qoob etc).. i had a dodgy image which was burned on media which both my cubes liked.. i put the disc in the viper'd cube (v1.1 bios at the time) and within the first 5 secs it had DRE'd.. i put the same disc in the qoob and the qoob kept reading and reading, making all sorts of clicking noises, trying to read the disc.. it wasn't completely locked up (because i could open the disc and it would detect that and try and reload the disc on close etc) - but it should have been producing a DRE - but it didnt!

this is not good because the disc isn't physically readable (either due to damage or structure/layout of iso on disc) and the viper shows this, where as the qoob had 1 (or more) of its DRE triggers altered so that it would keep retrying, and in turn wear out the laser quicker for no real reason..

anyway, might be a similar thing happening.. if possibly - put gcos on your chip as well and boot it as an app then use that to boot the disc and see if you get a DRE.. good luck :)
