What is the difference? Please don't flame me. I am broke. If I can mod my Wii for 8 bucks and get the same results, I intend to. Tell me what I will be missing out on if I get that chip.

From my understanding they are pretty much identical... hence the name "clone". Only thing you might have to worry about is that clones might not be supported by the upcoming firmware update from wiikey (assuming they ever release one.) I've had a couple customers send me these to install for them and they seem to work just like the originals. Now I personally feel that buying clones is wrong, but some people might feel that chips are wrong altogether, so do whatever you want. :)

If you're after the cheapest way to mod your wii you may want to look at wiifree. It shouldn't cost more than 15 bucks for parts and you will get updates and not have to worry about the chip dying.

Other than that what dohclude said sums it up.

Thank you both!

What about what I've read about Wiikey not having the audio fix for GC games? Is this still a problem with Wiikey and its clones?

Yes, the wiikey is currently the only chip on the market that suffers from not having the audio fix on gc games, and since the clones are using the same hex, they suffer as well.

I love how the mod-chip community is sooo against a pirated Wiikey chip...I smile a little bit inside whenever this conversation comes up :P

My .02 cents - I'm guessing Wiikey's code was ripped, and the clones are identical in every way, and upgradable by official Wiikey firmware updates...

Well at this point go for wiifree. The new batch of clones have so many probs.

For something cheap I'd recommend Wiifree or some other open source project. They're cheap and upgradable, and the Wiikey team says their update will not be compatible with the clones.

That "WiiK" looks a whole lot like a Chiip, or at least it's using the same Atmel microcontroller, but each to their own.

I'm completely happy with my Chiip and OpenWii firmware. Total investment: $9.00

Chiip and OpenWii can't use WiiKey's config dvd
but WiiK. can use WiiKey's config dvd

get a wiikey. The team has said they are NOT going to do anything to block clones.... because they cant. They are identical chips with identical hex code.

The WiiKEy's config dvd boots fine on openwii and chiip. You can use all the apps with no problem.

Or did you mean that you can use the config disc to actually configure the Wiik? If so, that means it must be the wiikey firmware just flashed to a atmega8(like the clones), but with no PCB. That is interesting if true...

yes, WiiK. can use WiiKey config DVD to set Region Override: (on/off) and Drivespeed: (3X/6X)
