View Full Version : Getting my Wii modded has been nothing but a disaster for me...

Sigh...this has just been one bad experience after another. I dont have the skills to solder it myself, so I decided to bring it to someone who knew what they were doing.

First, I bring my console to a local modder. He seemed to know what he was doing, and it was a simple mod job, so I didnt really think of inquiring about any sort of guarantee. He was installing a cyclowiz, and screwed something up, and destroyed the drive. The Wii booted up to menu, but the drive was dead. It would freeze if it tried to access the drive, play VC games, or do a little "too much". The guy didnt have any Wiis on hand to fix it, but I have him the benefit of the doubt. He said he'd have another drive within a week. Never gave him any money and certainly didnt leave my Wii.

Over a week later, hadnt heard from him. Told him I wanted a drive or a new Wii, and the gangsta came out. Somehow it became *my fault*, because I requested the cyclowiz instead of the crap WiiFree he wanted to put in instead. Basically, unless I was willing to fight or call the cops over this fiasco, I wasnt getting my Wii fixed. The guy was an asshole, and I just didnt have the time for this sh*t over a console.

So I figure I'd swap the drive myself. Tried and failed to get another Wii, even after waiting out in the freezing monsoon in the NE last week.

I decided to just cut my losses, and try to sell it for parts, and just get a new one, premodded maybe. I list it on a message board, and some guy claims he can fix it. I tell him its way beyond a quick fix like a bridged fuse, and he says he's got a spare drive he'll give me from another Wii, that had a Wiinja modded up. He was going to remove the Wiinja, and mod a Wiikey (apparently a clone) that I had picked up. He had a good reputation, and I asked him what would happen if anything went wrong, and he said he'd make it right (although I've heard that one before). He also was going to internalize the gc memory and wavebird receiver.

Fast forward a few days. I had mailed him my Wii, and he received it. He pulled the old drive, removed the Wiinja, modded the Wiikey, installed it (looked perfect), fired it up, and it worked, never froze, played backups and all. Finally! I thought it would just be a few more days, and I could finally use my Wii again.

Then this morning I get the news, in his own words:

"Your going to hate to hear this, & I can't explain it whatsoever. But your Wii killed the other DVD-ROM now. I don't know how or why it did it, but it did. I tested the DVD-ROM in my friend's Wii, it didn't power up.

I tested his DVD-ROM in your Wii, It powered up and read discs.

I'm going to need a little bit more longer to diagnosis what the hell is going on with this console if you don't mind."

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HH!!!!

So after one botched mod by a gangsta, one useless freezing morning in the cold rain, two drives, two modchips, a Wii sent hundreds of miles, and $150, I have nothing to show for it but this post. :(

The guy I sent it to still seems to be a stand up guy, and he said he'd fix whatever went wrong, but now he has my Wii AND my money, and his phrasing of how "the Wii killed the drive" isnt so confidence inspiring.

Is there ANY REASON to believe that the Wii itself caused the second drive to die? Wouldnt it be far more likely that the removal of the old chip, the install of the new chip, or GC mods had something to do with it?

Why would you let a gangsta attempt to mod your wii?

The **** in him didnt come out until he screwed the mod up. He went from being a good guy to a total asshole after I left his place, when all of a sudden it became MY fault that he screwed it up, and wasnt man enough to take full responsibility for his own actions.

Why do you call wiifree crap? Wiifree can do anything wiikey can do. I've seen cyclowiz brick more wii's than any other chip install.

I just cant place my faith right now in an open source, non-DVD upgradeable chip, that I cant update myself.

Just the opposite, I've seen more WiiKey fu*kups than CycloWiz. This is even apparent reading these forums. Besides, its not the chips that cause the brick, its the installer.

Sorry to hear about your troubles m8 ... I've done tons of installs of both the WiiKey and CycloWiz (more Wiz's though) and if installed properly, they don't kill the drive. Seems a bit shaddy to me.

Not sre how he messed it up but i'v installed 2 WiiKey's so far and both worked 1st try. Now for the Wii crashing on your system this has happend to be but only when the Wii is totaly taken apart so its just the board sitting on my desk pluged in. Only then would it crash after about 5 seconds in the VC game. Good luck getting your Wii working though, not sure how you can really mess a install up on the Wii.

Yep, right now its a big mystery, and I'm still waiting to find out whats going to happen next. There is no reason to believe there is anything wrong with the mainboard itself..the freezing stopped as soon as he put the new drive in. Which then died, but he said it works fine with another donor drive...

The donor drive used to have a wiinja on it which he removed, and then put the wiikey on. That alone would likely increase the chances of something going wrong with the mod.

But damn, at this point, all I want is a working wii. Now I have another problem...if he did go ahead with the GC mods, and I just end up getting my Wii back with a dead drive, Im fairly sure nintendo is going to want to replace more than just the drive itself....sigh.

step 1: reassemble your wii and make it appear as close to retail as possible.
step 2: buy a new wii.
step 3: exchange the old serial number sticker with the new wii.
step 4: put your old wii with the new serial number back into the new box.
step 5: take the new(old) wii back and get a refund.

good luck man..

I think its great that people are smart and come up with neat ideas and modifications, but what is the purpose of these GC mods? There is no benefit of having these done to your Wii. They provide absolutely no extra functionality to what is already available. The only thing I see is the risk of damaging your console.

The system provides ports for GC controllers and memory cards; use them, it is why they are there. If you end of having to get a complete Wii replacement, I recommend you leave these out in your next mod attempt. Save yourself from more possible trouble.

Wow, that's some really bad luck. That just goes to show you that local modders aren't always the best route to follow when getting your system modded. I hope you get the whole thing sorted out buddy. ;)

I think the first modder code name "ganster" accidently driped so solder on the mobo , causing 2 pionts to short, thus bricked you opitcal drive.the second guy didnt notice this problem and proceeded with the wiikey and it bricked you drive again. it was woking at first maybe because the short kills the drive slowly.

Basically. Most stores sell out within hours of getting them in stock.

Get it back or follow this http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=50528 post for some guidance on getting the drive back up and running - I call bad install otherwise he would have shipped it straight back...

Hypothetically speaking... what's the easiest way to remove the sticker and get it back on still looking new?

i wouldnt even bother matching up the serial numbers, most stores wont have a clue.

It does suck that installer was so bad he tried to blame you for his cack handed work. Ive fitted loads of mods in various machines and a few times things have gone wrong, rather than BS the customer i went out and bought a new machine, modded it and then looked at the one that went wrong when i have some free time. As far as im concerned if your doing something that could get you into legal trouble, you dont pis5 off your customer.
