View Full Version : Nintendo Europe right to post about 'damaging' Wii Mods?
Yesterday, Nintendo of Europe posted a 'warning message' that mods for the Wii could damage your console as well as decrease its 'functionality'. The full news is available to view at http://www.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/en/GB/home/index.do.
So here's the question, the number of 'modder's is relatively few in comparison to the amount of Wii's out there. Was it wise on Nintendo's behalf to post such news on their official website?
well, in fact, they are right. you can damage your wii when you try to mod your console.
whats wrong with that?

The third option is "Advertising Ploy!"
Nintendo are one of the only manufacturers to make profit from each console sold and not have to depend on software sales for profit!!!
So, by letting people know they can be modded, they sell more and make more profit!
Nintendo have known about modding since the first console they released, so they knew what was coming!

From a corporate standpoint, it was a dumb move.. They are raising awareness to modchips in a demographic that would have never known they exist in the first place.
Mods can damage the console, well great for Nintendo.. Let people break their consoles in a attempt to mod it and then charge for the repair (since warranty is voided). What better way do they want to pass along the message "Modchips are bad"?

They make more money on software than they EVER would repairing consoles...

If more people know chips exist for wii, nintendo will sell more consoles.

That's not true. The demographic that knows about this official message is probably the one that all along knew about modchips. Do you think a casual gamer will bother to throng the internet for news about the Wii? Ugh, I think not.

Barely any good games worth pirating anyway, they should concentrate on that first instead of silly warnings.

Yes,because it's on Nintendo's Main site not on a forum or a blog

Like PSPWAD says, nintendo are a software house and if you look a the DS they are the main producer of software on their own machines, if they turned a blind eye to modding they may gain Ģ20 in the sale of a wii but then lose Ģ100 in games sales, it doesnt make sense to ignore it. It is unusual that they made a statement about it, unless they have recieved a high amount of returned machines with hamfisted soldering damage.
I dont think they have alot to worry about really, if you look at piracy on the DS its so much cheaper and easier, you can pick up a cmplete flash package for about Ģ30 and no internal modifications or warrentee voiding is required yet the sales of DS games is very very high.

If you don't use your modchip correctly you can brick your Wii, example, playing Paper Mario US import disc with a modded PAL Wii will brick your console updating with 2.1E firmware for NTSC Wiis (you need to apply the correct firmware 2.1E for PAL console and then play your import)

It's not impossible that they received many consoles to repair because of the Super Paper Mario bug, as SPM was released a couple of weeks ago.

yay a poll! We don't get many of those, in fact its the first one I remember. Yes it was a pretty dumb thing to do, people who know what a mod is should be aware of the dangers anyway, and those who didn't know what a mod is are probably wondering now.

How many non-gamers will visit Nintendo.com for information? I think they're more likely to turn to a review site for information on the Wii than Nintendo. It's the same with Playstation.com etc.

Nintendo are clearly fed up with morons who destroy their Wiis with 1000W soldering irons then send them back to Nintendo.
From what I hear, Nintendo are nice about most consoles which get sent back and fix them even if they are fried by the user.
Personally I think Nintendo are 100% right to make people aware about the danger of mod chips. Only people who aren't worried about (a) voiding their warranty (b) breaking the law (in the UK) (c) ruining their Wii, are likely to attempt to install a modchip, and the people who tick all those boxes are likely to know about mod chips anyway.
It isn't like Nintendo are posting links to mod chip sites or installers.

All they did was inform more people there is a mod available, this is a good thing as there sales will increase!!

I think too much has been read into this. Someone at Nintendo probably repaired like 3 failed modjobs in a row or something that night, and was like "wtf are these people dumb?" so made a news post about it.
Barely any good games worth pirating anyway, they should concentrate on that first instead of silly warnings.
Agree..with those PS2 graphics:D

i'm sure it's legal, but intentional 'accident' doesn't cover in the waranty. :D

Just because people know they exist doesn't necessarily mean that they use them. I knew chips were available for PS1, Gamecube, Xbox, PS2 and never bought one. I've got one for my wii, but that's the first console I've gotten one for. IMHO, this will not significantly affect the amount of people which will get mod chips installed. It is interesting to see them openly talking about it though.
