I just installed my wiiket and I want to know if I really need to burn that boot disc? I already tryed a game and it work fine.

No its not needed it just lets you change the mod chips settings

I was unable to play any backups until I changed my drive speed to 3x.

I too had to set drive speed to 3 to avoid disk error.
