Opening up the upcoming Xbox 360 Elite reveals some interesting component reduction and new signal processors. Read on as the Dailtech crew discuss the Xbox 360 Elites motherboard revision.

There were rumors the new SKU would swap IBM’s 90nm Xenon PowerPC processor in favor of a cooler running 65nm variant. Microsoft made no mention of such swap with the official announcement of the Xbox 360 Elite. Popping off the heatsink reveals a different CPU revision. It is unknown if the different revision correlates to a 65nm Xenon, however, other changes to the PCB raises further speculation. Microsoft has revised power delivery on the new Elite. The Xbox 360 Elite makes use of smaller capacitors arranged in slightly different arrangements. Microsoft has also reduced the amount of MOSFETs installed in the power supply section of the PCB. There are also fewer resistors located above the CPU as well. However, despite the power changes, the die size remains the same as with the HDMI-less Xbox 360. One could speculate the Xenon CPU is still 90nm but Microsoft has opted to integrate a different thermal bin, similar to how AMD bins its regular Athlon 64 X2 and Energy Efficient models.

its obvious the cpu is stil 90nm based on the die size of both systems, unless the elite has a higher clock frequency wich i doubt. this is explains why the elite isnt a the premium price tag due to the 90nm

hrm a GPU revision... and epoxy holding down the GPU now... lets hope they fixed the heat issue.

also they layout change seems to indicate better power consumption. and we all know less power means less heat..

We talked about this yesterday. Did they actually fix the problem? It sounds like they didn't move the gpu which was the problem right?:confused:
Edit: Never mind same damn spot. They didn't fix the heat issue:mad:

the problem was that the boards would warp under extreme heat and cause some disconnections at the CPU....with the new Epoxy holding it in place, the problem should be solved.

right causing the link to the BGA(Square DDR Ram) to break... dunno how well this will work.. seems kind of a bootleg fix, but if it does work +1 MS!!

anybody open a new core or premium model or a recently repaird unit to see if this fix has been applied to the board aswell??

@gonepostl
lower power consumption and some other various changes may just lower the temp of the gpu enough to keep the 3 ring of death away.. not to mention the Epoxy..

I think it did too, before MS "released" the info that nothing changed, there were rumors of it running cooler, so I think this is proof of it. So with it having a revised DVD player that runs softer and makes for a longer life cycle, it looks like the only thing that will kill the 360 is an Update from MS that totally ruins the 360. But that hasn't happened since April 2006 or so, so I don't see it happening again. Oh, and awesome picture Indierocker.

Actually the X-Clamps used to hold the CPU and GPU in place are causing most of the 360 problems. Those Clamps causing would cause the board to bend and loose connection. I still would like to have seen if MS still use those stupid X-Clamps on the Elite. If not I'm sure the ROL problem will be back on the Elite.
