Attorney and oddball anti-gaming activist Jack Thompson has sent Microsoft President Bill Gates a letter concerning the recent VA shootings and the influence the Xbox 360 plays.

Dear Mr. Gates:
On Monday, April 16, at 3:10 pm, I was a guest, as I often have been in the past, on the Fox News Channel. News anchor Bill Hemmer asked me to profile the Virginia Tech rampage killer. I did so, noting that until that day the worst school massacre in world history was at the hands of Robert Steinhaeuser, who literally trained on the Microsoft on-line, hyper-violent shooter game, Counterstrike. I mentioned your company’s game by name. I explained that the rehearsal for such a massacre is key to being able to pull it off, as efficiently as Cho, whose name we didn’t even know at the time. Cho and Steinhaeuser were able to do what they did the first time because it was not the first time. This is why the military uses this same virtual reality simulation to train soldiers to want to kill and how to kill calmly, as the witnesses of Cho said he did.

Is Jack taking this a bit too far now?

Couterstrike started as a user created mod, in 2000 based on the half life game engine, later was made part of the official half life releases
by VALVE and Sierra, NOT MICROSOFT. But you fellow gamers knew that already, Mr.Thompson did not.

If this was true then how come the following isnt also happening.
1. The 1980's game Dig Dug - How come nobody ever went around with an air
pump and tried to kill people by over inflating them huh ?

2. Doom (all the versions) nobody went around with guns, and chainsaws after playing that game, (did they ? )

3. Columbine, 1999 Doom was out already and quite popular.
Counterstrike wasnt even out yet.

well, actually, doom has been used by people like jack thompson before when talking about the columbine shooting. or was it quak :confused:

anyway, yeah...guys and idiot. there is not hard evidence that video games cause violence in children. the only thing that has been noted is that when people play it, they're temporarily aggressive. but not enough, to plan out buying a gun, stocking women, being a loner and shooting 30+ people.

there is no significant correlation. i believe the courts have ruled in favor of this....13 and 0? states are in debt to the ESA for all their silly lawsuits, and that money is being taken away to pursuit video game makers.

I was watching a news program last night, I think it was on CBS but it might have been FOX. They did a small montage of some of the victims, showed some of their pictures and a little bit about them, I wasn't really paying 100% attention to it because I was on the phone.

They were showing a picture slide show then they would say things like "Freshman Jane Doe was 18, she loved to dance and sing and like rocky road ice cream."

This was done to make people respond by relating to the victims, I do make remember one of the descriptions for one of the male victims listed that he was fascinated with "Nintendo" and was just hoping that Jack Thompson didn't hear that and try to exploit the fact that one of the victims was a gamer.

In fact the only thing I've heard related to video games that I actually believe is that one of the victims "liked Nintendo" I really only hope for his friends and families sake Jack doesn't try to jump on that.

I mean obsoletely no disrespect to any of the victims by my following statement, it is only meant to illustrate the extremes I think Jack Thompson will go to in order to attack video game makers.

I fear that some statement such as this one will be used by Jack Thompson in the future, please comment: "I Jack Thompson may not have been 100% accurate that the shooter was a video game addict, but I now believe that I have solid proof that video games lead to at least some of the deaths that occurred on April 16th, 2007. I have proof that at least some of the victims were gamers and at least one of them liked Nintendo, I think video games warped their view of reality to the point that they actually believed they were invincible or could respawn.
